wabashcr Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 I'm very new to CCs, but have definitely noticed there exists a rather loud and obnoxious group of people who enjoy informing people that their Habanos are fake. Every youtube or blog review with comments enabled seems to have that one person who insists the cigars in question are fake. And it's always done under the guise of being helpful. No matter how well-versed I become on the subject, I can't imagine going out of my way to tell someone their cigars are fake, unless 1) I was asked for an opinion, or 2) the cigars are so obviously fake that there's literally no doubt. And in the latter case, I'd like to think I'd have the tact to point it out in a more dignified, less haughty manner than what we've seen here.
Popular Post El Presidente Posted February 11, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 11, 2015 You guys are far better than myself at picking fakes from photos. There are obvious fakes and then there are professional knock offs. The latter is harder to spot and then when you take into account normal Cuba variance (packaging/construction). It takes some cojones to make a definitive call online. I may say to myself "Crikey, that looks dodgy" but I would rarely call it out online without understanding the procurement process and preferably seeing them in person..... and if still not 100% certain, smoking one. Weekly I would get a dozen e-mails from members (mostly new and sometimes non members) who send pictures of cigars they have purchased in the past of which they have doubts about. From band placement to band differences to variance in gauge within the box to colour shade differences to box code doubts to "tasting off" to ...you get the drift. They are legitimate concerns and I answer them to the best of my ability but rarely do I make a straight out "fake" call. Over the past 10 years on FOH I have posted plenty of pictures of genuine boxes with horrendous aberrations. All were legitimate Habanos. I suppose they could be considered the PSP of "Cluster****s" and there were hundreds if not thousands of others over the decade which raised eyebrows but were never posted. No one likes to be told that their box is fake (if indeed they are). How one couches the correspondence and discussion is a reflection of the person involved. Genuine information, empathy, a statement of doubt "I am not quite sure but...." + a little class goes a long way. 7
Ginseng Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Right there what El Prez said. Cuba is Cuba after all. Case in point, here are two cedar leaves from 50-count slide lid boxes of Saint Luis Rey. Guess which one came from a counterfeit cab? P.S. it's a trick question. Wilkey
Guest rob Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Why do you care when a guy you will never meet, and whose opinion you don't care for, says something you don't agree with?
Ken Gargett Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 the problem comes, and we see it all the time with wine, is that fred nurk (and if there really is anyone called fred nurk, apols) decides to post about a wine (or cigar). he might not have a clue (though obviously there are many who do) and the review might be good or bad or indifferent, but if he gives it a rave review then there is every chance either a retailer or the winery will use that review. it helps them sell wine (or cigars) to have that third party endorsement. suddenly he is an expert. might not know a wine fault if it bit him but doesn't matter. it is in that winery's interest for him to be seen as an expert. not sure if it happens the same extent in cigars but it is a problem.

Happens in reverse Ken. Two blokes in a video review call a newly launched cigar as crap .....let's call it the "Monte Shlopen" All hell breaks loose with incessant bleating from the makers that you are acting in a very "uncomrade" like manner. Cold shoulder at 20 paces for the next 2 years 7
stogieluver Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Manny, I posted a link for reference for him to check out on your post Ryan, you're just going to confuse the troll with the facts. He's liable to label all of the cigar photo's on CubanCigarWebsite.com as FAKES! 2
Manny Sotelo Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 @Rob, it bothered me on how he handled it... Trust me when I say his opinion ment nothing and I never once have doubted my source (obvious), at 1st I thought he was just a concerned BOTL and appreciated his concern. We sent polite messages back and forth and then I was tagged as having a fake box... He then tagged the "expert" in my post. I guess that's when I got all worked up... I do take offense when someone tries to force their so called expertise on me... I tend to be an elitist on many of my hobbies as I invest many hours of time and money into them, so when I encounter another such person with "less credibility" it just rubs me the wrong way... But I'm over it now and Pres post hit it on the nail... Great! Now I have to buy something to feel better!.
wabashcr Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Just out of curiosity, for those of us not on Instagram, did the Enforcer weigh in on your cigars yet? There's bound to be a fair amount of confirmation bias involved whenever anyone actively peruses social media looking to point out fake cigars.
KRunch61 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Just let it go and don't let it bother you. Their whole agenda is to get a rise out of you. If you want to see some expert trolls in action, go visit CA's cuban forum. They've completely taken over that place. On second thought, don't go there. True, but wasn't always that way. Anyway, if not for the trolls there, I wouldn't be in a better place. FOH rocks!

I'm not to worried about it anymore...

(You threw me off with the PS)
khamy Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Left one? (You threw me off with the PS) I believe the left one is colorado cedar wood, very difficult to obtain so must be the real deal.
Ginseng Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) Left one? (You threw me off with the PS) I believe the left one is colorado cedar wood, very difficult to obtain so must be the real deal. That's correct. Sorry boys, I misread your answers. I asked which one was from the counterfeit cab and the one on the LEFT is the correct answer. The one on the right came from an authentic cab. This and the infamous El Rey del Mundo "De Mi Tassy" have convinced me that anything is possible coming out of Cuba. Wilkey Edited February 11, 2015 by Ginseng answered incorrectly re: read responses wrong.
santela Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 I believe the left one is colorado cedar wood, very difficult to obtain so must be the real deal. Yup, I would think the left one is real, but got thrown off by the "trick question". Oh well they are both legit...
El Presidente Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 lest we forget Imagine the blowback if i sent those out unchecked and sealed 4
Manny Sotelo Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 I think it's time to listen to this!..

Drguano Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 My question...how can you tell when a Ghurka is a fake? 1
Ginseng Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 My question...how can you tell when a Ghurka is a fake? Again, trick question. They're all fake. Wilkey 2
Popular Post KGM Posted February 11, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 11, 2015 My question...how can you tell when a Ghurka is a fake? When it tastes good? 7
JohnS Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 These are the type of people who claim your cigars are fake because the Authenticity slip is not included in the boxes! I say ignore them, don't waste your time even acknowledging they matter!
