santela Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Just finished a very young Monte PE from a new box (not from Rob). I consider the PE to be an unique cigar because of the very distinctive sour note (fruit sour), but I wasn't able to get any of that from this particular stick. I have occasionally heard the sourness being mentioned by other reviewers, but not nearly as often as I thought it would be, since to me that is what set PE apart from the other cigars, and what kept me purchasing new boxes. I'm very new to CCs and cigars in general, and I wasn't blessed with the refined palate as some of you were. I would like you guys' opinion on the sour note. Is it actually there? If so, is it something you look for when smoking a Monte PE? Do you consider it a defining characteristic of the cigar? Or was my palate just messing with me? Any feedback is appreciated.
garbandz Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 interested to learn the box code. Obviously if it is very young,it could be in an awkward phase. When you say fruit sour,do you mean like candy? Or are you describing the slightly acidic "Twang" that is present in cigars? or did I miss it completely?
CaptainQuintero Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Its difficult as tastes are personal, plus construction issues can make cigars even in the same box be different. Look at the recent blind tasting results too. Personally the PE to me is milk chocolate more than anything else, but I get raisin / dries fruits from Monte with 4/5+ years on it so that me be somewhere in the cigar, maybe you pick up on that in fresh cigars while for example my tastes picks it up when the tobacco has deteriorated more.

I mean I get this fruit taste that is on the sour side, can't pin down what fruit exactly. Not really candy since I didn't get much sweetness. But don't quote me on this, like I said I'm a newbie and don't really know what I'm talking about. Box code is ESO NOV13.

That makes sense. The last box I had was a 10 ct and I got some nice sour fruit taste which led me to purchasing this box, but I smoked two from this one and didn't get what I was expecting.

It is a bit mouth twisting and puckerish, but not unpleasant. maybe the tobacco in your current box was aged a bit more prior to rolling.
JHands Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I have a box of PE from our host that are awful right now. Going to revisit one in 6 months or so. Too bad because I really love the size for the amount of time I usually get to smoke Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Try the Montecristo #3 maybe, that's what I get the taste the most and most strongest in. I find it gets more and more profound the older they are, normally from 5+ years.
BlueDevil07 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I have some PEs from a 10-count box (MAY13, I think) that hit a sick period in the winter and tasted like dilute stomach acid and paper. Completely awful. I tried one a few weeks ago and they were slowly coming into their own. Give them a few more months.

I read a review somewhere that also briefly mentioning the sour notes, so I thought it was more of a character of the cigar. But looks like it may not be what's intended if no one else is getting it from theirs.

Smallclub Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I've never had sourness from a petit edmundo…
westg Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 One of my top three cigars...always have them in my rotation. I have some from Rob that are 2014 ,with which I find a particular fruit sour note and a little bitter chocolate ,,I have some as far back as 08 which have become rather harsh...I think two or three years on them and they are at there prime ...stick with them though, I love them

Dozerhead Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I have not experienced a sour note with the PE, but tastes are personal and subjective. I don't have the most refined palate, either, but I usually get coffee/chocolate/expresso notes from that cigar, but that is just me. The PE is one of my favorite cigars that only seems to get better with time and unlike other Montes that tend to be very consistent, imo. You may have had a very young cigar.

I think you are with the majority here. I will have to let it sleep for a while and see what happens.
Cohiba007 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I smoke so many Petit Edmundos my nickname should be PE. And yes, I've had a few with some very bitter sour notes. Mostly they just taste like heaven though.
habanolover Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Have some young'uns '14's...beautiful dark wrappers and great construction. Tried one off the truck with great anticipation...strong as DEATH!;o I'm no wimp but I couldn't finish it, no Monte flavor at all...plus nuked my pallet! To the bottom of the cooler they go;{...but I have great hope that when they turn they will be spectacular...
Cisco Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Sorry for the threadjack but are sour notes found with cigars a flaw or just a transitional note? In other words, will time diminish this aspect or is the cigar always going to be sour?
Dozerhead Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I will add that while I haven't experienced any sour notes with the PE, I have encountered a bitter note with fresh ones from time to time. I think of it as more of a dark chocolate type of note.
El Presidente Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Your palate is your palate ....unique! Another may never be able to taste exactly what you taste. 1
earthson Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Have smoked a few - less than two years old and have never had a sour note. A little ammonia, yes, but nothing exactly sour
ksblazer Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I've gotten sourness from the PE's Even a year later I could still taste that sourness. Kind of a sour cream like sour.
