I had the question today from a member and I thought it best to put it to the forum in order that he receives a greater spread of opinion.

Closest cigar/cigars today to a Fonseca Number 1?

* preferably one that can be smoked fresh

* vitola not that important.

Fonseca Cosacos?

Possibly an ERDM Choix Supreme?

Fonseca is a marca that I have struggled with since I started, nearly always plugged solid. Nice sugary sweet aromatic smoke given off, just a pity I've never been able to draw a mouthful of smoke through the cigars.

I have no idea if this member has access to them or is willing to pay the premium asked by some grey market vendors, but the 2 Regionals Fonseca (2010 for Benelux, 2011 for France) are very good — a similar profile to the No.1, but a bit stronger andmade with a much better tobacco, or blended with much more care.

I'd also suggest the Flor de Cano Selectos.

Good. Good! 13 RMS box code was bloody brilliant! Better than most smokes I've had in a while.

Thanks for putting the post up Rob!

As you can tell from my avatar, it was my question - thank you all for the recommendations - now to start trying a few!

Years ago a dear friend bought my old house and with it an old desktop humidor filled with Fonseca No 1's that I didn't much care for. They were left in the cellar for a long time, but when we rediscovered them we I just couldn't believe how great they were smoking.
