Hi there everyone.

I came across this forum as a result of searching for reviews of various cigars and finding the video reviews on YouTube.

Briefly, I was a keen pipe-smoker at University then I got a job, rented a flat and more recently obtained a wife all of which put paid to pipe smoking... I'd tried cigars on and off before but basically nicotine and I do not get on. For some reason I never got too giddy with pipes, but the sorts of cigars that my friends smoked were far too heavy for me. It put me off for a long while.

I recently had another go at it with help from one of the staff in a certain well known and very expensive London smoke shop and finally got a cigar I could live with. That was a Fonseca No.1 (which I know did not please all the panel on the FOH video!) which is, perhaps typically, now discontinued.

I'm slowly trying other cigars and currently trying to work out which desktop humidor brand to trust with my hard-earned, and also what a realistic starting capacity would be.

I hope in due course to post some thoughts on my initial experiments, I can't call them reviews since I don't have the experience or knowledge of benchmarking anything I taste!

Welcome from Brisbane.

In regard to desktop humidor size, I recommend you get the biggest you can. Probably a 300 count humidor. They must calculate the size on very small cigars because you'll never fit 300 in one. Remember you need room in the humidor for humidity beads (from cigarmony.com and others). Even if you only plan to keep a small number of cigars, it's better to have more space than not enough, especially if you want to let some cigars age.

In regard to desktop humidor brand, this is mainly a matter of your taste and budget. Most important is to get a humidor with good seal. Should be a snug even fit to the lid all round. Lift up the hinged lid and drop it. If it slams shut it, that's not good. Should be a 'whoosh' of air as lid settles into place. Very expensive humidors are beautiful pieces, but may not have better seal than cheaper humidors.

Heated houses during the UK winter mean keeping constant humidity in the humidor is something of a battle. You'll need to add distilled water regularly.

Welcome to FOH! I'm also from the UK and found the forum pretty much by the same route!

Mark's advice is very good! I just bought myself a new humidor (the pictures are in the "What's your setup" thread). It said it could hold 120 and after having a humidor that could hold only about 20 I thought this was a good number. Following a couple of orders through here and about half an hour of "cigar tetris"...I managed to fit about 100 in there (admittedly some 25 DC's which do take up a lot of space) and the rest is in the old small humidor.

Now I have no space left for any more so I need to get smoking! lol3.gif

Good luck with your experiments and catch you around!
