Hi,

Just a thread to get your general opinion of ring guages. I notice the odd comment on message boards both here and on other sites that seem to show a dislike of the thicker ring guages.

What do you people out there make of it?

Personally I have smoked medium to thicker ring guaged cigars and can't say that I find any problems with the thicker ones.

Cheers

I used to be pretty much 42 and under... 43 and under now that I discovered P 8-9-8's ;-}

I've read things about the corona being the perfect size for wrapper to filler ratio, giving the best flavor. I don't have a wealth of experience with larger sizes, so I really can't say if that's true or not. But I believe what the Elders here tell me.

I just smoke the smaller rg's because they 'feel right' to me, in my hand and my mouth.

Cuba has dropped many of the smaller sizes in the last few years, and NC production has never really leaned toward small ring guages.

You should experiment for yourself. You may be at the beginning of this hobby,so see what you like best.I can promise if you enjoy cigars long enough your preferences will change.

When I started with cigars, there were no sticks over 50 ring in the US,,and only a couple that size.

No J-R,no internet,and a small selection of "imported"cigars....

Probably even in Cuba there were few 50 ring cigars produced.

Now the sizes are getting larger,I feel, to the detriment of the consumers.

My preference leans to the smaller ring gauge vitolas though I have enjoyed some of the larger ones (<56RG).

Some are already larger than I like and, if the trend continues I believe they will eventually get beyond where I'd be comfortable smoking them. Some NC cigars have already reached these proportions.

Asylum 13 is 6 x 80 rg... 'Asylum' says it all. Probably created by someone from one.

Don't think I can open my mouth that wide.....whoever smokes these must be overcompensating.

I used to be more robusto guy till 52 max. Smoked few Zino crown platinum barrel which is 6x60. Just way too big and uncomfortable for myself. Lately I feel even 52 is too big. Pretty much in love with corona gorda (46 rg) and I smoke lotta more corona, petite corona than ever. Feels good for me. You just do how you wanna do, how you feel it right. All personal bro

I have plenty of over 50 rngs, but generally prefer under 50 and over 40. PC to Corona Gorda to Churchill is a happy zone (and, coincidentally similar length/rng ratio) in my humble opinion. Still enjoy plenty of fatties, particularly the PSD4's and Epi 2's and the huge clouds of smoke they produce, but I doubt many would consider a robusto to be all that big anymore!

When I'm in the severely tropical climates, the PC's do better, whereas my CG's and larger tend to swell up and tighten up. Exceptions have been the Siglo VI's and the looser big boys like the Partagas Series E #2's that could be accused of being under filled, but it works just right for a soggy jungle. Still, the safer bet is slim and slender.

I suppose they must fiddle with the fill tobacco, since there's a smaller ratio of wrapper to filler when you go fat on a stogie. Certainly a more profitable deal for the manufacturer?

Arghhhhhhhhhh, an 'almost' 60RG Habanos tantrum.gif

Limited Edition

The Robustos Supremos is the first Cuban Cigar to have a 58 ring gauge, making this Cigar currently the thickest Cuban Cigar in living memory.. The Robustos Supremos follows in the footsteps of the Cohiba Behike and Pirámides Extras in utilising the new Cohiba Hologram band.

All that good tobacco that could be going to many more, less expensive smaller RG cigars.........

So far I do find that thicker sticks tend to become more muddled (or well melded in the flavor), but also more easy to enjoy (less chance of overheating). Smaller ones are more precise, if that makes sense.

I feel most comfortable overall with 35-45 or so. It feels better in the hand and I do think the draw tends to be more rewarding. Generally easier draws on thicker sticks? or at any rate more air has to go through I assume.

For the most part 48 to 52 area seems to be the cigars I have enjoyed the most as of late.

Have a look at this one below. I was watching an ESPN World Cup Soccer review of the 1974 World Cup Final and the camera shot to this guy in the crowd. I freaked out at the ring guage. Bloody hell!

OK, now that's just F'in' rude to smoke that in a crowd! He's gonna make the whole stadium go no smoking!

Greetings, The Marevas size is still king in Habanos and for good reasons. Things come and go but these stay and I'm fine with them. To me it is the Cuban classic and most brands have this size. Thanks....................... Blessings !!!

+1. Coronas, Marevss and Cervantes are great, I also like the minutos like Reyes, RASCCs, Punch Petit Coronations and El Principes.

Apart from some of the MCs, i feel like a lot of the character of each marca is lost when the wrapper is dulited with all that filler. There definitely are some exceptions though. I like the edmundo and a bunch in the Robusto range.

I usually like my ring gauge at 54 or below. However, I will make an exception for salomons and perfectos as many perfectos that I find are 52+ at the widest portion and I like having cigars that give me a taste of the same blend at varying ring gauges..

Variety is the key for me, different gauges offer a different smoke. One of my all time favourite cigars is a Hoyo Du Gourmet (33RG), however i'm also a DC ***** and love them just as much, they're just different. Biggest RG i've had was a 60RG X 4 inch nicaraguan I got as a freebie, I smoked it with an open mind and it turned out to be a great cigar, and a very different experience.

Oddly (for me) enough, I smoked an approximately 54 ring cigar this past weekend. The girth, combined with a draw on the looser side of "perfect" made for a fairly unpleasant experience, so I pitched it after a quarter or so.

I also feel that that combination can have a detrimental effect on flavor, but perhaps that's another topic......

i have a 64er Cuban custom roll.

it hasn't seemed interesting to me at all. I bought it mainly for the novelty. now i'm contemplating breaking it apart and rerolling it as two cigars...

33-46 is my preferred. Do enjoy some of the outliers like PSD 4, EPi 2 and JL2 tho. 60-80 rg? Yah, I'll give it a go but imagine would be a two hitter quitter. Even if it was one of the dam tastiest cigar I've ever had, prob wouldn't buy it in quantity. Long and skinnies are generally my favorite. The hand and mouth feel sits perfect w me.

A larger RG stick just feels right in the hand, and the consensus between my smoking buddies is 50-56 is our sweet spot.

60 is simply too big.

Im looking forward to the CoRoSupremos release.

I prefer Piramids in larger sizes as they are more comfortable to smoke.

50 and below for me. I'm smoking a Maduro 5 Magicos (52rg) as we speak and it is past my comfort point. That being said one of the best cigars I've smoked recently is the Behike 54 followed by the Cohiba PE.

When Heawns said that thinner ring gauges were more "precise" he worded it perfectly for me.

I often enjoy the flavours of thicker cigars (just as I do for thinner ones, but I do find it starts to get uncomfortable to smoke beyond 50 - I smoke a Juan Lopez Seleccion Suprema a couple of weeks ago, which is a 52 ring gauge Double Robusto, and my jaw did ache smoking that!

The ideal for me is 44-48. Love my Lonsdales and CGs. Anything over 52 is pushing it and anything over 56 is just plain ridiculous and unnecessary. It really saddens me to see Habanos move toward higher RGs with new releases. Part of the reason I love CCs is the tradition involved and the lack of goofy trends like you see in the NC world.
