PapaDisco Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Damn Cpt Q, LotusG and Stevie! Now I've got the bug! You guys have a preferred source or are you just Ebay'ing these goodies?
CaptainQuintero Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Nice klaus!! Those insides will be like new after even minimal cleaning with damp then dry qtips/ear cotton buds Just eBay fir me papa, you can get older ones for real bargains and it's easy to spot fakes as they usually are the brand spanking new ones and mostly from China/HK If your after a brand new one id just go through a real dealer/website
KoreanCowboy Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I actually just bought bought my first lighter. I've always been a matches guy and torch lighters are just "dopey" to me. It's nice to see such a lovely looking lighter. If you give it good reviews I must might have to follow suit and grab a similar one. Thanks for sharing!
Lotusguy Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I bought all of mine on Ebay. However, I found this site for butane and flints they do carry some reconditioned and new lighters as well. http://www.elegantlighters.com/category-s/1821.htm
Blakes Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 My Grandad used to have literally hundreds of these and others in a big display cabinet, I remember my nan letting me play with them (empty of course) when I'd stay over as kid, Along with his WW2 medals and Gurkha kukri knives I've been thinking of getting a soft flame for a while now, I like my Dupont maxijet but there's something about soft flames lighters. I hadn't even thought about my Grandads lighters until I saw this thread, though I'm not sure anyone knows what happened to them since my grandparents passed. Hopefully my Dad will know.
Cohiba Stevie Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 The lighter arrived today and I am simply astounded at the quality and condition of it. Every nook and cranny has been cleaned and polished to like new standards. I will post pics. I also love the characteristic snap when it opens, very satisfying lol. A few things I didn't know about dunhill lighters: Dunhill invented the side strike lighter so it could be used with one hand (before ST dupont) If the user adjusts the flame height to light a cigar, when the lighter is closes it will revert back to standard flame height (so it dosent burn somebody's face when your lighting their cigarette or injure somebody that may use your lighter. How cool is that!
PapaDisco Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Do you guys recommend going for the reconditioned lighters on Ebay (seem like they're about $200 for a rollagas) or getting an 'as-is' (seem like they're $25-50) and then replacing the seals and flints and doing hinge work yourself?
Cohiba Stevie Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 Many of the reconditioned ones are told by hobbyists and they have been reconditioned from the inside out. There is actually quite a profitable little market for people buying £30 Dunhills and duponts and reconditioning to re sell on ebay. You have two things to think about: Are the £30 ones in good working order? You might think it just needs a seal replacement but find out it has a cracked gas tank when you dismantle it. Have the higher priced ones been reconditioned and serviced to an acceptable condition? I would go for a higher priced one, if it dosent work as described you can send it back and claim a refund via paypal. Hope this helps.
Jamesuk Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I have some nice ones.... My silver is in for reconditioning at the moment including being re plated. Watches and Cigars. 1

Lotusguy Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Would love to see the before and after pics from the replating - I have never seen a good job being done on that.
Jamesuk Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Well fingers crossed it will be ok. It will be done with the lighter in bits so should be good. ( it helps being in the jewellery business).
La Suerte Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Had a few upmarket lighters but Colibri is my thing.. 1
dan5974 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I love lighters.I've been thinking about a Dunhill or Cartier.I'll go for a used one because I can't see paying over a $100 for a lighter.I do got around $200 in one of my Duponts because I had to get it repaired.I just picked up one of these. http://sarome.com/products/lighter/flint/sd7.html

CaptainQuintero Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 O.K. Captain Q. I too have been lured by your siren call over to the dark side. This is in the mail to me as we speak: Sweet pick-up!
Cohiba Stevie Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Ok time to revist this thread for two reasons... 1. Update on my dunhill rollagas is that its simply the best lighter ive ever used. It has never put a foot wrong and the most surprising thing is that using it outdoors it beats some of my torch lighters because of its easy adjustment. I am in love with this thing. 2. Ive just bought another... That is all. 1
AlastairE Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 What's the go with restoration/repairs/services? I haven't been able to find much in the way of options within Australia. Are the majority of these in the States/Europe? Any information is appreciated, I have been asked to look into this for a local member
