El Presidente Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 So I was at ken's yesterday for a video review of the Monte Double Edmundo. Always a great afternoon and an "entertaining" video review For the record i have tried to get ken to wear shoes for the review but at this stage of his advanced eccentricity...it is all I can do to make him wear pants. Forgive me. Where was I.... Yes the discussion came around to LE's and aging. I know we have covered it here in dribs and drabs but a straight question for those who have older LE's in their collection that they have sampled over the years. "Which LE's from 2006 and prior in your opinion are actually smoking better today than they were over previous years? if you think that they are, please name the cigar. If you think your box had peaked previously, then where possible, when do you think that box was at its zenith (which year)? It would be nice to compare notes keeping in mind we all have different tastes.
Guest rob Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I had a 2006 Cohiba Pyramid a couple of weeks ago. Whilst my recollection of it may be fallable - I am finding it is not as 'strong' as I recall. The flavour and smoothness were still beautiful.... But the body was a bit lighter. I have 2 or 3 of these every year and they have been very consistent, but just losing that fuller body ever so slightly.
PapaDisco Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 In addition to Good/Bad/Ugly commentary, I'd be interested in a brief mention of how your particular moldy oldies were stored: singles, boxed, plastic wrapped, etc. iffin' y'all don't mind giving away your secrets. Oh and Rob, thanks for the valiant effort on the shoes. I guess we'll just have to consider Ken's tootsies in the camera lens as "local flavor."
ChanceSchmerr Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Interesting topic! I just smoked a Monte D 2005 LE from last year's box pass a few days ago. Definitely a Monte flavour, definitely over the hill. Makes me want to revisit my Monte Sublimes to see how they are to make sure I don't smoke them too late. On the other hand, I've been smoking steadily from my box of 2000 Party Piramides LE's (1 per 4-6 months), and they are consistently stellar for me, only one dud in 9 so far. Lots of strength and character, with legs to keep going if I wanted to age 'em further.. 1
shlomo Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 The only 2006 and earlier EL I have actually smoked in the year of release is the 2006 Cohiba Pyramide. Tough to comment on "aging" when the comparison from first release is not possible.
Ken Gargett Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 et tu, brute! nice. first, at absolutely no stage did you make any attempt whatsoever re shoes. truth is you could not care less. i am at home. if someone important turns up, i'll put on shoes. and as for that comment re pants, welcome back the brother grimm. atrocious lying. in fact, you drank so much, i feared we were in real danger of you taking yours off. secondly, nice jumping the gun. not much point in doing videos if you then run to the forum with the very question posed on it (rob act, actually asked if you could comment on the 06 cohiba - not much point even editing the vid now).
PapaDisco Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 et tu, brute! if someone important turns up, i'll put on shoes. Well, I guess we viewers know where we rank! Seriously though, thanks for all the fun reviews!
fingerburner Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I recently checked in on a RyJ Robusto LE '01 and thought it still a fair way off fully uncoiling it's full flavour spectrum. Still incredibly intense with amazing depth - it's tannins yet to fully soften, to use some good ol' wine speak.
in0gravity Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I am currently smoking my way through a box of HdM Epicure Especial LE 2004. Having mixed results until now. Some have been very good with potential for a longer period. But then there were some who are just hot air with absolutely no flavors. I also had a RyJ Robusto LE 2001 two/three months ago. Can confirm what fingerburner wrote above, still a very good cigar with intense flavor profile. regards Lars

X2 I chased down a couple of boxes of these when I first started smoking cigars. I have one box left and the last cigar from the last box was as Rob has stated abit lighter compared to the earlier cigars I had enjoyed. Still an enjoyable cigar though and my last box will remain untouched until next year.
anacostiakat Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Ok. From memory, the RyJ Hermoso #2's, Partagas Serie D #3 2001, Cohiba DC and Cohiba Sublimes all are holding their own. It is true that I smoke a very small number (1 or 2) during a given year. If that. The last Cohiba Sublime I had was truely sublime.
Smallclub Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 HdM Epicure Especial LE 2004. Having mixed results until now. Some have been very good with potential for a longer period. But then there were some who are just hot air with absolutely no flavors. I started to smoke my box in 2005 and finished it in 2011. Each cigar was better than the previous one, with the exception of a few that were seriously lacking strenght…
Orion21 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I have smoke 5 Partagas EL 2004. They were all average and seemed too old. I did not have the opportunity to smoke them young.
Mr.T Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I have a box of Partagas Serie D.1s 2004. I've been smoking them here and there on special occasions. From the box I have, I've found them to be consistently very good and complex smokes and I don't believe they have peaked yet. These still have some years on them....
El Presidente Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 and as for that comment re pants, welcome back the brother grimm. atrocious lying. in fact, you drank so much, i feared we were in real danger of you taking yours off. I was on my best behaviour!!!! Admittedly it is a low benchmark
Ken Gargett Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I was on my best behaviour!!!! Admittedly it is a low benchmark nor is it mutually exclusive with my comments. tragically.
bassman Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 The only older ELs I still have are the Cohiba DCs. Odd cigar. One of the best ever fresh, then after a year nothing special. Still waiting for a return to form. Party Piramides my favorite EL. Stellar until I smoked them all. Widely faked, I'll not invest the going rate to get another box. 2003 Hoyo Piramides were the one EL that I kept too long. They really did fade by about 2010. I last bought ELs in 2008-. Cuaba Piramides. Nasty when fresh, but pretty tasty now.
