Grahamsant Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Well this is my first review on here so I would welcome any feedback and apologise in advance for it's relatively short length. I haven't had a cigar since Christmas and with relatively poor weather here in the UK I haven't really had much opportunity. Today it's been raining and overcast but with the missus at work I decided to enjoy myself and have one. I have a balcony to protect me from the elements and with it being overcast most of the children have been safely tucked away leaving it to be quite peaceful. Being relatively low on funds I have not been able to afford a box yet so I cannot give you any more specifics other than it being a Partagas 8-9-8 that I decided to delve into today. It's been sat in my humidor for about 6 months so it's probably a relatively new cigar. First thing to note is that I felt the draw was a little on the light side. However, that is probably my only criticism!! The smoke was smooth throughout and developed some wonderfully rich and deep flavours. On opening and throughout the smoke there was an incredible abundance of taste, specifically a toasted nuttiness flavouring that sustained for the length of the cigar. A beautiful taste reminding me of the international Christmas markets where you can have freshly roasted nuts. Although not as noticeable at the beginning, as I got to the final third of the cigar there were quite peppery flavours that seemed to come from the heat. Being a big fan of peppery and chilli flavours this was a welcome flavour to add into the mixture. It definitely has an earthy and natural quality to it and the rich flavours would indicate that this cigar is not for the faint-hearted. If you prefer your cigars mild and floral then this is probably not the one for you...however, if like me you like your cigars to be rich and deep then this is probably one of my favourite cigars yet! I enjoyed the cigar with a generous glass of Havana Anejo Especial rum. It's worth pointing out that until I tried this particular rum...I didn't really like rum at all but Havana seems to be perfectly made for cigars and I absolutely love it! It's flavours seem to add something to the cigar smoking experience and it has made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Approximate smoking time for the Partagas was 45 minutes so my only real complaint is that it didn't last longer! I would happily still be sat out there now continuing to drink and smoke in the peace and quiet and with the occasional glimpse of sunlight to warm you through. Overall? I would have to give this a 9.5 out of 10 with the only restriction on 10 being my relatively limited knowledge and experience of other cigar brands and types. Hopefully you lot can help me with that!!!
Grahamsant Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Hmmm...thinking that glass of rum may have been too generous! I got up after finishing that review and am feeling a little drunk! Haha! No complaints though! Great rum and awesome cigar!
beamer Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Great cigar. Can't say I've ever had one that was rolled too loose. I usually end up with the odd one that's too tight.
earthson Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Like 'em, but am partial to the P Shorts. 898s seem to need age if for nothing else than to even up the burn (the slight stems of the wrapper leaf seem apt to start lopsided burns for me)
