Livo Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I'm so jaded at this point I'm wondering if any coach that accepts the job isn't showing poor judgement out of the gate.
Laxman Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 David Shula would be nice, but then I am a Giants fan.
stillinger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I'm in DC. I'm a long suffering Redskins fan as well! they just interviewed Jay Gruden today (1/8) and are going to interview Danny Smith (the owner wants to supposedly... yuck) and will still interview James Franklin (Vanderbilt's HC). I think they're going to shoot for Greg Roman or the DC from Seattle, since I think Whisenhunt (who is probably the best choice) is supposedly most interested in Detroit. I personally think that's a better job. As for why the Redskins? They spend money. There's only 32 teams. There's only so many jobs. Many of these guys have massive egos that think they can fix anything. For what you say about Snyder, he wants to win, and he seems to have given the keys to the kingdom in Shannahan and Allen since that's what people wanted. They do have some parts, even if they're short a first rounder. They'll also go out and get whatever facilities, coaches, staff, players a coach would want. They are still a premier job, where football is still #1 by far. While they do want to improve, and I think that's the aim, both ownership and the fan base is going to be patient if they see improvement. The team should certainly be better next year, but they don't have to win right away to keep their coach.

stillinger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 note, they also ate dinner with Jay Gruden last night prior to the interview, so they're at least having heavy talks, and I think he's a contender if Roman or Quinn either don't interview well, or don't want the job. Roman has been in the area (with Baltimore) but both Gruden and Quinn know guys in the area. Quinn coached a number of teams in the area in college, and also went to school in Maryland. Gruden's Bruce Allen's buddy. But I think they've got a bit of an issue in getting him, as he's a pretty popular choice. I also think they intend on interviewing Zimmer from the Bengals as well. They're probably going to interview a good 7-8 more people before they get their guy, but now it's more just treading water until they're able to interview the guys who are going to go deep into the playoffs. I'm a bit torn, I think their defense was terrible, and it seriously needs corrections. But I also think whoever comes in better have a plan for Robert, or they're not going to succeed in the short term. For what it's worth, they've still got 7-8 assistants under contract (including Haslett), so it will be interesting in where they go, but I would expect they're going to do more than just get a good coordinator, but probably will also have to pluck a strong coordinator for the side of the ball they don't get in a coach.
Ken Gargett Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 for me, rg3 is the potential jewel in the crown and the man you'd hope to build the next decade around. so the sooner they get a coach to maximise that (without being siily), the better. but then get the absolute best defence co-ord they can. even if they pay a top head coach stupid money to take the spot. for all the crap that gets thrown at synder, not without some cause, the point that he wants to win is surely unquestioned. so i think throwing whatever money needed is a given. that is no guarantee, as discussed, but it helps.
Dozerhead Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Gary Kubiak is out there. They wouldn't have to change the offense. He would probably want to bring in Matt Schaub for his starting QB, though.
stillinger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I think Kubiak's a decent shout as a OC. He might take that spot if they needed a guy. The problem is, he's running basically the Shannahan system, and I don't know if they want to go that route. Maybe. I'm not a fan of paying the DC head coach money, I think you still need to find guys who are up and coming and hungry. I'm not 100% on RG3 (more like 98%), but I do think you have to see it out. You gave up the moon for him, and he had a heck of a first year. I don't think you can be willing to give up yet, but there are many things he needs to do to improve and prove himself agian. I think he's a guy who can do so, he just has to get away from the marketing machine and into the video room. I tell you what, I'm more concerned with Allen not naming a true GM than head coach search to be fair.
Livo Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I'm as much of a fan as anyone. I've been rooting for them my entire life and have never lived more than a fifteen minute commute from a home game. I just don't see how they're going to get better anytime soon. I believe Snyder wants to win, but I don't think he knows how. Allen isn't a personnel guy and yet he's in charge of the personnel department instead of being moved into a team president role. Its looks like without the threat of Griffin running defenses are content to play more coverage and force him to go through his progressions and he was VERY poor at it this season. He'll probably get some more of his speed back, but it's concerning that he was getting caught from behind by lineman this year. Reading a defense is not something you should have to learn how to do once you get into the NFL. Sure, you should get better as your careers progresses, but I don't know of any quarterbacks that have looked like they have never had to do it before and have ended up being great. The defense was one of the worst I've ever seen. I sure hope I'm wrong...
olotti Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I'm not reading all two pages so maybe this has been said but I think the best coach for the job is and was shanahan, look at that offense last year when RG3 was healthy they were unstopable, then the Knee injury in the playoffs and he was rushed back by I'm guessing pressure from the front office and coupled with a average defense and now here we are with the back and forth between shanny and rg3 and that's terrible to see. Best thoughts I saw this year were if they'd sat RG3 out the first 3 games the orginization would prob have been better off in the long run but in the day and age of win now they totally messed this kid up as was obviously seen from game one and his confidence and the playcalling was gone. The best coach out there is Wisenhunt but hopefully hell come to the Lions.
TheCoach Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Jay Gruden is still here in DC Ken, this is after he interviewed for the job yesterday afternoon. The only reason why a coaching candidate stays around is to hash out a deal. Bruce Allen is very familiar with Jay Gruden and to have him come in for an interview as one of our "last candidates" lets me know he tried his best to do his due diligence with other coaches before hiring his guy right out of the gate (which he couldn't, the Bengals were eliminated from the playoffs). He has ties with Bruce Allen in his Tampa days (6years). The Rooney Rule has to be met as well. Jay Gruden is our guy, the city is buzzing over here about it. HTTR!

HTTR! thanks for that. so the feeling is positive? i knew about the old tampa connection - seriously, is tampa simply a skins nursery? go back nearly three decades and we were pinching tampa staff players and hand-me-downs even then. gibbs. doug williams. heaps. i am surprised that they didn't wait to talk to roman but i guess if they thought they'd lose gruden then they had to jump. perhaps we'll have roman next year.

The reports are that Gruden prefers Tennessee, but that Snyder may try to overwhelm him with his offer.
stillinger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Yeah that's the word this morning. Local radio and tv are suggesting he might be the pick. Got to figure they're still going to go hard after a top DC, but Haslett could be in the mix (Bleh). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
anacostiakat Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Washington Post reports this morning: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/football-insider/wp/2014/01/09/redskins-jay-gruden-make-progress-toward-possible-deal/?hpid=z3
stillinger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Jay Gruden it is. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
anacostiakat Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Yea just saw it. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000311077/article/jay-gruden-washington-redskins-finalize-deal Not too surprised.
alloy Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Let's hope Gruden can teach RGIII to be a better QB. Dalton (minus the playoff game) is a pretty good QB and Gruden was his mentor.
Orion21 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Whisenhunt to Detroit would be an epic move. The Skins made the wrong choice with Gruden.
OkieJoe Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Well, It looks like the majority of us guessed right lol
khomeinist Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I give this hire a 4.7% chance of being successful....

Gruden is all about the hail mary-esque vertical passing game. Thanks to the ridiculous WR corp that Bengals had, Dalton was bailed out 50% of the time. No progressions here. Just air it out.
