DrunkenMonkey Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I wonder if Gruden is going to keep on with Washington's current zone-blocking O-line scheme, or try to introduce his 'huge guys' thing he did at Cincinnati. Washington doesn't really have the personnel for that. Really strange choice, I think. But I think anyone with experience who could be a candidate for a job like Detroit wasn't going to go to work in Washington, so he may have been the best they could do. I hope he does well, but I doubt he will. And he'll probably be fired before he can get any results anyway. But if he does do well, some more reasonable owner may notice and pick him up after he's fired.
Ken Gargett Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 i must say he would not have been my first choice but i'm hardly qualified so have little option other than to trust the choice. be no great surprise if it goes belly up but there was a lot of positive talk about him from a number of teams. so i'm happy to get on board and see how it goes. i must say i am a bit surprised by so many thinking that this is a job for the dregs who can't get a spot anywhere. sydner would be a concern but eventually he has to learn - he seemed to get a lot better in allowing shanahan to have his way this time. you'd have to think that gruden has raised this with both allen and sydner. idiot if he hasn't. but you have a famous team, one that has been great, with an owner with very deep pockets (so can cover all sorts of things/facilities/requirements outside the salary cap - and i gather was happy to do it for shanahan). you have a QB with massive upside. interesting that we are now seeing quite a few players coming out and saying no issue with rg3 while all the attacks on him are still "anonymous sources" and 'someone inside the organisation' - which always screams crap to me. and what football team has everybody all getting along and happy? you have a few pieces in place - williams, running backs, outside linebackers, garcon, reed. plenty more needed. granted no first round draft pick but but you have very high picks in the rest of the rounds, possibly a reasonable pick if they trade cousins (not first round but..) but a bucket of money to use under the salary cap for free agents to fit the new coach's plans. and a QB that had the best rookie season in history - granted held back with injury and crap this year - but huge potential. to me, a good coach has a team he can mould into something really special (yes, long way twixt cup and lip...) good luck to him and hopefully we'll have that superbowl win within 2/3 years and a few more after that. i'm tipping him to be the skins most successful coach of the modern era bar joe gibbs. HTTR, indeed.
anacostiakat Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I think Gruden is a good choice if he gets good supporting coaching. I was leaning a little more towards someone who already had head coaching experience but given that out of who was available I t hink they have made a good choice. I sure as hell like his enthusiasm. We will just have to see . . . .
PapaDisco Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I can't think about that . . . I'm still pining for the days of Sonny Jurgensen! (currently displaced Washington, D.C. native!)
