FLB03TT Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Long time lurker, 1st post. Been smoking cigars for 20 years and mostly Cubans for for the past couple. big fan of Bolivar RC & CG, Monte Edmundo & #2, JL2 to name a few. Am currently sitting smoking my 1st COHO - LTB MAY 13. It started off very slow, picked up after 1st 3/4 in. and has now settled in to be more flavorful, but nothing particularly exciting- just average. I've read that COHOs need several years of age to come into their own, but not sure if it will be worth the wait. Wondering how COHOs generally compare to the Siglo series? Look forward to your comments.
Hiroshiro Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 3-5 Years for the Cohiba Pick up. Once they do they are great
Laxman Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 I have had some great CORO's over the years but the majority had some age on them(5 years plus). Personally I find them overpriced and the current Epi 2's and JL 2's are smoking so well rite out of the box and at half the price. Coro is a great cigar to lay down for awhile and you will be rewarded highly.
ramon_cojones Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 though my favorite cigar is the rass, if you're looking for instant grat i'd echo the above and buy two boxes that are smoking well now for the price of one box of coro you have to lay down
poorman Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I'm a huge fan of the CoRo, new or aged, anytime. That being said I also love the recent Hoyo #2's. So much so, if I had to choose between the two it would be very difficult. As stated, for the price the hoyo is a no brainer, compared to the CoRo. But to answer your question, I'd take a Siglo VI anytime over either one of those.
poorman Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Well I guess I didn't answer your question. I've never tried a IV. But I do have some V's from 07 that are great. As far as young Siglo's. The II's I've tried were enjoyable. My young VI's have also been very good. Currently have a few boxes set aside as well for aging a while.
Cohiba Stevie Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Love a good coro... But a good sig iv will knock your socks off, they are also very consistent. Coros were getting a tough wrap for a year or two but are starting to get back to being great.
potpest Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I can't comment on aged Cohibas but the fresh Siglo4 and coro ive tried have been thoroughly uninspiring. Always great construction but just not the flavour I look for.
Bclass1 Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I can't comment on aged Cohibas but the fresh Siglo4 and coro ive tried have been thoroughly uninspiring. Always great construction but just not the flavour I look for. I agree. I have a box CoRo and Siglo 4 both from 2011. I must say though, the very first cigar I had out of the CoRo box was absolutely amazing. The few that I've had as of late have been very sub-par. Same goes for the SigIV. I'm letting both boxes age in my cabinet until about 2015-16 and we'll see what happens. A lot of people claim that it is worth the wait. I haven't aged much Cohiba because of the price point as well but I'm hoping my investment is a good one.
markmurase Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I do think Cohiba is a brand that rewards aging. No doubt some Cohiba boxes smoke OK when young, but they'll be better with at least a few years of correct storage. Possibly better still after 5 or more years. This will go the same for Coro, Siglo IV, Siglo V, and other vitolas. I personally think the Cohiba Behike's do smoke well relatively young (say 1 year minimum). If you want to splurge out - could try a Behike 52 or Behike 54. If you prefer to smoke 'em young, it's possibly not worth spending the premium on Cohiba. Just my 2 cents worth.
FLB03TT Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 BowTie- I suspect your comments pretty well sum up life with Cohiba.
laficion Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Nothing particularly exciting- just average. Look forward to your comments. For me,No cigar Is Worth 5 years of waiting. Smoke them now, You never know what life has for you later on.Cigars are ment to be smoked NOW !!!!!! B.T.W. , I love my Corona Gorda's,Great and cheaper too .
bassman Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I've found that Cohibas really DO benefit from a few year's age. In general, to me the Siglos are not as full flavored as the others. My main issue with CoRo, Espies & Siglos is their inconsistancy. I've been smoking boxes of 07 IVs & 08 Vs. Some are stunning while others from the same box are just OK. For Cohiba money I want more consistancy. On the other hand, I've smoked almost 2 boxes of 08 Cohiba Corona Especiales from the El Laguito factory & each one has been an excellent cigar. Maybe because it's not so massed produced but I've never had a bad CCE. That is the only Cohiba I would still buy. I've had some good CoRos, but I'm not a robusto fan. If I was I'd save some money & buy the Boli RCs.
Dbone Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Good question to the OP and I've enjoyed reading everyones comments. I had a few boxes of Cohiba when I started out, think I still have some in the humidor but probably in the last 3 or 4 years I just cant bring myself to buying them, they're just too expensive and I do not justify the added value. Yeah, they're good, but so are so many other cigars half as much. I did / do like the Robusto, Siglo III, and Siglo IV (which are completely different). Truth be told, I've been buying a lot of "what's on sale". For a cigar to come into its own is pretty subjective of course, do you like your steak rare or well? Plenty of avid smokers throw a little more caution into the wind and enjoy them fresh, or give them years to settle down but loose their freshy flavor. I believe what Guy says, buy cigars to smoke them. Today is now, there may not be tomorrow. If you buy more than you can smoke, the byproduct is aged cigars :-) Good Luck
