First shave... on my homemade razor

Recommended Posts

Wow, interesting project. I've not shaved for a few months. I miss the serenity of stropping, putting a hot towel on your face, lathering, shaving, and then stropping again.

Make sure you post pics of the production and end product :)

Straight user myself here. Amazing to see you making your own!

I hope it goes well mate, what type of scales are you going for?

I haven't used my straight in a few weeks now, been using my Merkur Futur DE as I have been mad busy.

I will probably hone it over the weekend and get it shave ready.

I've never used a straight edge. I currently use a Merkur 23C and sometimes a Gilette Mach 3 when I am traveling. I've always been interested in a straight razor, but I suppose I will stick with the DE. I am stubborn and want to find a good blade and technique before I move on at all.

That said, I have been looking at people making their own knives for the past couple weeks and this is the first I have seen of someone making their own straight razor. Pretty awesome, and I hope you have good luck with it.

The scales are the pieces of solid material that the blade folds into.

Some designs are made of exotic woods and/or ivory. Marquetry is also common.

Cheaper ones use plastic but just as effective.
