godpheonix Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I just had one of these on the deck over the weekend, boxe date late 2012. i really enjoyed it, it had a nutty spicy taste with an occasional sweet note that popped up here and there. when i got to the second half though, it was a different story, because a bit dirty/hot and would go out 3 or 4 times. i really had an issue with the wrapper not burning very well. i'm guessing it the young age of the cigar. not sure. but that first half was great ! any thought or experiences on these, please do tell!
ramon_cojones Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 they're pretty good, i've never been wowed by one but they're solid i am a big fan of royal robustos, half coronas and petit coronas as well as aged sir winstons
Ginseng Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 When it went out, was the coal/cone sticking out or was it deep inside with the unburnt wrapper sticking out the farthest? Love the Mag46 BTW. One of my all time faves. Smoking one of its ruddier, more robust country cousin right now, Ramon Allones Specially Selected 08. Wilkey
mk05 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 When it went out, was the coal...deep inside with the unburnt wrapper sticking out the farthest? Probably that. I think this happens when the cigar isn't bunched properly right? Was the Mag 46 strong in your opinion? 2012 were the strongest 46's I have had in a bit.
Ginseng Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I've seen it be more of an issue due to humidification or the smoking environment. I have, on occasion, smoked outside while it was raining or very humid and the cigar can rapidly get nasty and peter out. The draw rate also can have an effect. So all in all, a bit of a puzzler. Construction? More as far as runs and tunneling for me but it could be as he states it was dry. A bit more detail would help. Wilkey

Was the Mag 46 strong in your opinion? 2012 were the strongest 46's I have had in a bit. I have a box SUB ENE 12. Easily the strongest Mag 46 I've ever had. So strong in fact, that I won't touch them for another year or so.

Wilkey to answer your question, it was deep inside with the unburnt wrapper sticking out. you know what that means ?

Wilkey the contruction looked good, i got the box from FOH HQ. and i did'nt have a draw issue since it smoked well for the first half, draw seemed just right. it was a bit humid outside and i did'nt dry box the cigar at all. maybe the was a factor.
El Presidente Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 A you know I am a lover of the mag 46. About to light one up in the next hour so I will report back. However, having smoked about a 1000 of these over the past four years, their burn can be wonky when young. I normally pick ones with rich wrappers (plenty of oil) and they appear to be more affected in the local humid climate of November - end February. During these times I dry box the Mag 46 by putting 5-6 for the week in an air-conditioned room with no humidity. If I forget to do that then I put a fresh one from the humidor into the fridge for an hour or two before I light up (I always preclip the cap before putting it in the fridge). I find the problem of wonky burns to generally disappear when this is done.
Karlos Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Will be buying a box of these this week so may have to do what you guys suggest and chuck a handful in a dry box straight up.
Ginseng Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 to answer your question, it was deep inside with the unburnt wrapper sticking out. you know what that means ? Generally this is due to overhumidity. Wilkey
ramon_cojones Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 ^this may have to get a box if they're stronger in new batches

headstand Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Finished a box this spring that had to sit for nearly two years before I could smoke them. For a while I thought they were just a bad box all bitter and harsh (my inexperience showing), but in the end they were absolutely wonderful. Probably the box i smoked through the fastest to date. Looking to order another box as soon as Rob confirms quality of current stock. Might have to get a few singles to enjoy while the box evolves...
Optic101 Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 The humidity factor explains a lot to me now. Had my first one right out of the box on my balcony and you know we have high humidy level here. Beginning was very nice and stable. Second half a bit troublesome. Smoked a couple during a trip (3-4 days in). Had no problems, the second half was more stable and I could enjoy it even more. Btw. It is a nice cigar ! Great inside. Thanks.
godpheonix Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 ya, if the second half can change to what the first half was...its gonna be an amazing smoke! just a profile i love in a cigar. will see i guess.
bigharpoon Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Just had a Mag 46 from my SUB ENE 12 box and it was great. I can't wait until these have more age, I'm very excited!
frenchkiwi Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 However, having smoked about a 1000 of these over the past four years, ha ha that sentence starter is legendary. you truly are El Presidente de los Mag 46. I've never been too keen on the H Upmann flavour profile, but when you said they'd taken a sweeter turn of late i decided to put my personal prejudices aside and get a box for the club. Question: worthwhile smoking these recent Mag46 shipments young?
