Nino Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Been out of it for 4 years now, but hell : Sometimes I miss it ... :-) Just stumbled across this fantastic video of a Lufthansa A-380 approaching & landing at San Francisco flown by my friend and former chief pilot Jürgen "J.R." Raps - gives me goose-bumps and makes me feel proud of having being part of that great airline for 35 years. http://www.wimp.com/approachlanding/ Deserves a good - naw, make it : A great cigar ! PS : No commercial interest here, there are so many good airlines out there ... just proud of this one :-)
Mr.T Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Great video Nino! That's a view we passengers don't get a chance to see or experience so thanks for sharing. I do remember though that some of my fondest memories of flying growing up overseas was when my brothers and I would visit the cockpit of a 747 and say high to the pilots. That was very cool. I fly internationally several times a year but have yet to fly on an A-380. I hope to someday!
nonameno Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Hallo Nino! That was a lot of fun to watch. I fly into SF once and a while to visit a German friend of mine who now lives in SF. Thank you for sharing, Curtiss
stargazer14 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Nice vid, made me a little nervous! Thanks Nino.
Orion21 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Ahhhhh, good OLD SFO. I frequent that airport and appreciated this video very much. As air passengers we take for granted the skill and precision required to safely fly any plane, especially one that enormous, so well. Cheers to your friends on an "almost" perfect landing
dpodiluk Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Nice video. Only reason the pilots are there is to turn the auto-pilot knobs

I fondly remember those times as well - we always had the door open, considered a visit to be educational and there wasn't a problem. Sadly it's gone and all that remains are videos like this. I guess it's still educational and takes away a lot of fright from people. BTW : One of the reasons I retired was my aversion to this "giant bus" - I still have to fly on it as well and have planned a Beijing trip next year where I'll be on it. Much more a fan of the '47. Hallo Nino! That was a lot of fun to watch. I fly into SF once and a while to visit a German friend of mine who now lives in SF. Thank you for sharing, Curtiss My pleasure ! Nice vid, made me a little nervous! Thanks Nino. Nervous ? Why ? As I like to say, the most dangerous part of flying is driving to the airport ... :-) Ahhhhh, good OLD SFO. I frequent that airport and appreciated this video very much. As air passengers we take for granted the skill and precision required to safely fly any plane, especially one that enormous, so well. Cheers to your friends on an "almost" perfect landing Ha ! Well observed - But the "almost" part you refer to is most probably the repeat sequence of the landing shown like it was a bounce or twice hitting the black top when it was just repeated for the video.
Nino Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Nice video. Only reason the pilots are there is to turn the auto-pilot knobs .... and also to turn the knobs off and fly and land visually and manually, as you can see ....
dpodiluk Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 .... and also to turn the knobs off and fly and land visually and manually, as you can see .... I know the plane can fly itself but would anyone get on a plane without a pilot? I'm envious that your a pilot. I thought about that as a career. Check out BBC's Airport Live. A four part series about what goes on at Heathrow airport. In episode 4 they are in a 380 simulator. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p018t3xg
Habana Mike Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Made that approach many times, never saw it from the front though... A380's a very nice plane to travel on, flew on one to/from Guangzhou/LAX on China Southern. They gave us pajamas, you got pajamas on Lufthansa? Agree on the 747, especially the reconfigured top decks Delta flys from Atlanta to Narita now - 14 seats, almost a private jet....
GottaBeKD Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Thanks for sharing. I flew on A380 on 2 separate trips. Smooth and uneventful flight but long. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
SigloVI Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Great stuff! Very cool to see from that perspective

Surely you remember that evil mistress 'Jetlag' ?
Nino Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 Just got to the hotel after a night flying across the pacific. Surely you remember that evil mistress 'Jetlag' ? LOL !! Thanks Dux, you instantly cured me - not missing that part !!
CanuckSARTech Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Very cool video. Looks like a HELL of a lot of pre-production went into that one, with setting up the shots from so many locations and angles. Very well done, and a great way to show a multitude of things, including the multi-lingual nature of commercial airflight, the skill of that crew, the A-380 itself, and the San Francisco layout. Amazingly well done, and a great video to watch! Thanks for sharing, Nino!
Stanislaw Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hey Nino that video is amazing thanks for sharing.... And I actually just shot a bunch of commercials for Lufthansa and they have been a prominent part of my life as I was a military brat living in Germany so always flew Lufthansa.... In other words, you are awesome to me..... Granted I was also gushing this much when I met one of the heads of Lufthansa (he only told me his name was Juergen) then proceeded to tease him for not being a bayern munich fan......
ZinZan Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 A380 is huge!!! I cant believe they can stuff so many ppl in there. I remember getting a seat number 24 on business. I was thinking how the the hell did they fit 24 rows in there.
headstand Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hi Nino, No need for humility, I have limited experience with internationall flights, however Lufthansa stands out in my mind for superior in flight service. As a resent retiree I know what you mean about missing the old work world, but then I tend to forget about the stress that came with the glory
