Jefferson Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I think it depends on what you get your hands on. The Man-O-War I smoked yesterday after lunch was very good, as was the MF Le Bijou I smoked last night while burning bratwurst on the grill. Conversely, the Ramon Allones I attempted to smoke on Memorial Day, was plugged so bad I couldn't get anything out of. I put it in the freezer for awhile, I rammed an awl up its keester, nothing. It doesn't get worse than that barring it makes you ill. Having said all that, I still believe Cuban's on average are the best smokes in the world.
stargazer14 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I had this same experience yesterday after reaching for an NC Aging Room from all this talk about Cubans being wind tunnels and not NC's. Well the cigar was no tunnel but I tossed it after 20mins of.... just ok. Nothing more. Didnt feel bad trashing 3/4 of a stick and reached for a Punch Punch. Much better, and more interesting throughout.

CaptainQuintero Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I don't think it's a particularly NC v CC issue, from my experience NCs generally have a draw that is on the loose side on purpose for some reason, maybe to produce a large volume of smoke? It certainly doesn't benefit the flavours of a cigar imo
ramon_cojones Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I just find the worst attributes to be uninteresting and not entertaining. This just happens to be the cross section of virtually all NCs and some CCs which I obviously choose not to smoke.
canadianbeaver Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I'll tell you what sucks, when you dry box these for too long... No fridge, freezer or trip to church will save them.
Colt45 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I've said this in the past: "Dear -------, you're going to owe me an hour or so of my life back".
Orion21 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 If the cigar was "given" to me by someone to smoke I would smoke the whole thing out of respect, unless it was putrid. However, if it was one of mine I would do what I did with my first "ok" Anejo No. 55 this past weekend . . . One inch in I could tell it was a dud because Anejo never start slow - they always sing from beginning to end. So what did I do? 5/6 of the cigar got pitched into the BBQ and I went inside and got another Anejo. The second one was great. Life is too short for "Ok" cigars. Sadly I have done this with Cuban cigars as well, like half a box of Upmann RR's that were just "Ok." It kills me to toss $10-$15 in the BBQ, but my time is worth MUCH more than that sum
Surucipe Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 I’ve recently had a Monte #4 that was „just ok“ from start to finish. I thought about ditching it a number of times, but then again you never know if/when it might still come through and deliver some interesting flavour, so I smoked it as far down as I would with any other cigars, just because “you never know…”. It’s probably just the hopeless optimist in me!

markmurase Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 I had this experience recently with a cigar. It was a Non Cuban but that really doesn't matter as it can happen with Cubans although in my experience not to the same level. The cigar looks great...burns great..it is a biggish cigar.... Opening " so what do you think" I am asked ...It's OK ...I say. "flavour is pretty thin". nothing changes to the half way point. " so what do you think" I am asked ...it's OK...I say. "flavour is still very thin". Last third " so what do you think" I am asked ....it's OK I say. ...it's just OK One of my favourite sayings is "only the mediocre are always at their best" I use it generally to excuse a mistake that I have made...or a drunken session...or a nap on the deck Still it pertains to cigars. Nothing irks me more than a cigar without a soul...without a definitive statement...a cigar that just goes through the bloody motions like a fashion model with the IQ of a tree branch. I would prefer something to yell about ...a tight draw, a bitter edge, a piece of pubic hair running down the filler. ANYTHING but 90 minutes of OK!! OK cigars are meant for the world of mass produced dry cigars, surely not premium cigars? For the love of God it must take some talent to get everything right in a cigar but leave out FLAVOUR of any type. I have made a commitment to never smoke an OK cigar again. I am just going to pitch them. Maybe it could be said that a cigar without vice has no virtue? probably not...but a cigar with a little vice is certainly better than a cigar without a soul. End of rant Well said Rob. I have no interest in smoking a boring cigar - ever.
sengjc Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 ...Of course its my own view on this (and possibly life) but you have to endure the crap to really appreciate the good stuff so i guess for me its keep smoking even if mediocre... I share the same view. Must be a cultural thing.
LGC Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 This is why I don't smoke fat cigars, churchills, and DCs very often. I don't like smoking the same thing for a couple hours. There nothing more frustrating for me than spending 1 or 2 hours on a cigar that never comes around, Cuban or NC. I'd rather smoke 15 minutes of flavorful demitasse, than 2 hours of a bland Churchill. There nothing worse than spending hundreds of dollars and countless hours on a woman that fails to deliver or satisfy.
laficion Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Let me put It this way ,after reading this thread. I prefer a great peso cigar, to an expensive N.C. anytime.
