dashto Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 First go this afternoon at a P2. Bought from a local B&M (Cheers Smoke Shop) and left in my humi for a month. This stick had a few construction issues (a patch on one side, looked a bit loose at the foot) but the burn has been even and the taste seems really full. Opening was pretty spicy, middle has seemed pretty smooth. Curious what others have had as experience with these. Feel like this is a better deal than my go-to Monte #2 so far. Thoughts? Nice to be on deck with a book and a cigar. Hope this weather keeps up...
oliverdst Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I haven't smoked PSP2 nor Monte 2 for a long time but, IMO, from the recent boxes, PSP2 is much better.
nikesupremedunk Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I haven't tried the PSP2 but I think the Monte 2 is better But really, I haven't tried the PSP2 yet and curious to try one soon. I wouldn't judge a cigar after 1 though.
finecigar Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Personally I find the Monte 2 to have less construction issue and overall a much more reliable smoke that I've never had a horrible experience with. PSP2 on the other hand is a cigar I have basically given up on and don't plan to purchase anymore due to many issues such as construction, balance, and quality. And I also agree with the comment posted on its rather mild profile- it is an all around turn off cigar to me. I would choose any other Partagas except the P2 Not trying to be a downer, as with smoking we all find out our own favorites and dislikes. Just from my experience I would have to choose a Monte 2 over the Partagas
polarbear Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I prefer the Monte 2 but do enjoy the P2 They are both very different smokes but i find they are both good smokes If i had to choose between the two, the Monte would take it 9/10
oliverdst Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 "If you haven't smoked one in a long time, how do you know about recent boxes?". English is not my mother tongue so you will see a lot of incongruencies in my posts. What I meant is that I haven't been smoking PSP2 and Monte 2 for a long time. Maybe 2 years so I don't know how they tasted before that.
IcedCanuck Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 If you haven't smoked one in a long time, how do you know about recent boxes? I find the PSP2 to be a fraudulent Partagas. It is so mild, that I sometimes think I'm smoking a Cuaba. Not to mention that I have had many problems with consistency over the years. I smoked a lot of PSP2 singles last summer and have almost gone through a full box since. Interesting you find them mild because I have found the ones I have smoked to be rather strong. Much stronger then PSD4s. I like them but find they need a little bit of time to calm them down. I do like them but they are not the first cigars that come to my mind when I think of a Pyramid.
dashto Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 Hey Iced, so what would be the first ones that do come to mind... I too found it quite strong, but not unpleasantly. Day after, still have a pretty defined taste in my mouth, as well... I've never had a Monte #2 that had the construction problems this PSP2s...

Monte No.2, H.Upmann No.2, and the Vegas Robaina Unico are all sticks I would reach for before PSP2.
oliverdst Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I am starting thinking I just had great PSP2's and poor Montes #2.
oliverdst Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 "No worries! I just thought it was a strange comment. I understand what you meant now." Yes, but re-reading my posts they still sound confusing. Só let's put this way: I started smoking PSP and Monte 2 two years ago.
mash Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 PSP2's need time. I have a box from '06, they were unpleasant until about 2 years ago. Now, balanced, medium -bodied, and just a pleasure. I don't like these better or worse than Upmann's, or Montes, or BBF's. They're just different. Try some older examples if you can.

I agree, I have a great looking box of PSP2 late 2009 from partagas factory. I think they are made exclusively at Partagas. Dark and nice cigars, not ready yet but I want to like them, but they seem so one dimensional to me, almost boring. I hope they improve, but maybe they are just not my cup of tea. Time will tell.

'09s from Partagas are "asleep" right now, hopefully will be a pleasant surprise, when up :-)
jedipastor Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I like the PSP2 a lot. I've never really been "wowed" by the Monte #2, maybe I've just never had a good one. The PSP2, on the other hand, has always treated me well.
