PigFish Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 A few more hints for you guys: When you see wood flooring you notice that the lines are broken. The ends of the wood planks are not even across the floor. When you line your projects, unless there is a need to stop a specific spot, you should break up the lines so that the planks are not all lining up in the same spot. If you have wood that is less than about .25" this wood will tend to warp. You might consider fasteners along with the glue. You can use a pin gun or even small SS screws or in one of these projects. Nice bronze screws, while hard to work with will tarnish and give you an aged look. An oval head, straight slot bronze screw will really match these project nicely! Using the screws is s a lot of work, but the look of the finished project will be worth your while. Cheers! -Piggy
AndrewNR Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Going to kick around today a bit before work and see if i can't get some ideas for sealing/insulating the chest.. Once I'm over that hurdle I'll figure out the best way to get it measured up.. Not sure If i'll just measure it or use templates...Even so, templates aren't going to be easy either I'm liking the small bronze screw idea.. Although If I do line with Styrofoam I don't think they'll really work. Hmm more to think about I guess.
PigFish Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 If you are going to insulate then fur the finish planking out. Plane furring strips the thickness of your insulation, fur the perimeter and set locations along the interior. Think of house framing and how it is used to support wall board or other material, where insulation fills the areas between the studs. Fill the voids left from the furring strips with the insulation, then cover with planks. Break plank seams as noted before at the center of a furring strips. Screw planks to the furring strips... You're done! -Piggy
AndrewNR Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 You could actually be onto something there PigFish! Although this project does seem to get more complicated each time I look at it
PigFish Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 You could actually be onto something there PigFish! Although this project does seem to get more complicated each time I look at it ... not really mate. There always has been only one way to do it right!!! It just took a while to get around to it!!! -LOL I have not even discussed the use of a logic controller yet!!! Good luck on your project! -Piggy

AndrewNR Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I was eyeing off strofoam boxes at work today.. thinking hmm i could cut that and use that is insulation inserts! The balls rolling.. Only I've got my bikes coming down tomorrow.. and those are going to need time and money.. and i just got a bunch of bills... So needless to say I'm bottomed out.
Livo Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Awesome project! What did you use to seal the top?

They sell various thin insulation for all kinds of things, from lining garage doors to undercarriages of cars. You can buy a sheet of the stuff about 1" thick for about $15.00 It has a foil skin that you cut with a razor and snap, like drywall or if you want a cleaner cut you can use a carpet knife, or even a table saw. I don't build wood humidors, but I can imagine that this is the type of insulation that those builders are using. The stuff resembles florist foam, except yellow, sandwiched between two layers of aluminum foil. -Ray
CanuckSARTech Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Well done, Simon. When I popped in for two days to visit Simon at the start of February, on my way through Montreal en route to Halifax, he showed me this baby of his. Gents, it looks even better in person. A great unit, fairly generous sizing and good use of available interior space, well constructed and sealed by Simon as well. I was quite impressed. An excellent job on a very unique and eye-catching humidor chest. Simon, you should definitely be proud of your new baby. Kudos and well done my friend. Cheers (and say hi to Eve for me, and thank you to the cat for not scratching out my eyeballs in the morning! Lol.)
