Guest Jagger Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Hello FOB members, I am new in here and fairly new to the finer world of cigars. I must say though that I am already quite consumed with them. I currently own 5 medium size desktop humidors and am wondering what to do next because I can already see that a whole garage may not eventually be large enough. I look forward to learning from you all and to contributing when I can. Cheers! Jagger

Squarehead Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Welcome to the FOH forum Jagger and happy smokes.
Guest Jagger Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 All I can say is what I did earlier, it is what it is. My cigars on the top shelfs get too moist and I have gone to moving the under lid humidifiers to the far left and not putting even a single layer of cigars under them. This seems to allow the humidity to travel more evenly, but I still have added additional humidifiers to the bottom level in order to 'maintain' the correct and consistent level of humidity. I have hygrometers under the lid and lying on cigars in the bottom level. This is in my 100-150 count desktops. The type of humidifiers I have in them all is Heartfelt humidification bead units built for passive desktops. Now things are running smoothly and the humidity level is consistent. Before I took these measures there was a significant RH level on top vs. bottom. I know this because of the two hygrometers I use in each humidor.
Fuzz Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Welcome Jagger. Out of curiosity, how wet were your beads when they were attached to the lid? If the beads were over saturated (ie you poured too much water onto them, leaving residual water in the holders) they may drip onto the top row of cigars beneath the lid. Also, the closer the cigars to the beads, the more they will com into contact with moist air. Personally, I've stopped attaching my bead pucks to the lid and just have them sitting on some cedar sheets atop of the cigars.

I look forward to participating in FOH. That's the thing, the beads were not saturated too heavily and I always make sure to use the syringe that comes with the humidifiers when I add water and I also make sure to leave visible beads white/dry so they can absorb and help regulate the RH. It's just that when my humidors are full and the top shelf is layered with cigars, single layer, there doesn't appear to be anywhere or any room for the humidity to circulate. Causing moist shelf level cigars directly under the lid unit. I do like your idea though because it will allow me to add another 7 or 8 cigars back to the shelf left side, lol. I need all the room I can gain... Thank you for the info.

Additionally, I learned on my first humidor long ago to shake the hell out of my humidifiers and then lay them face down on a paper towel and then shake them over my arm again before I put them above or beside my cigars.
Guest Jagger Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I just realized that I typed FOB instead of FOH in my intro. I apologize.
Colt45 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Welcome, Jagger. Call me captain obvious, but perhaps removing / not using the trays, and keeping cigars below tray level might help A gentle reminder for all of us - there is "no denigration of other forums". Disagreements that happen elsewhere have no reason to be brought here.
Guest Jagger Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Thank you, Bastian and Colt45 - I mean, Captain Obvious ;-), I'm looking forward to being here! Happy New Year to all and may we all have a wonderful cigar and scotch filled 2013!
Colt45 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 .......place humidifier at bottom instead of lid, in a matter of few days, all the cigars had stabilized. For anyone interested, one of our resident humidor craftsmen agrees (miss you, bastard) : http://www.friendsof...showtopic=77913
Othello Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Jagger, I'm new here too, but you were kind enough to welcome me on my intro thread, I would be remiss if I did not come over here and say Hello! and Welcome!
