Rushman Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 So it's been about 1.5 years since I left corporate America and moved to Playa del Carmen. I love it here but my wife doesn't. I started looking at opportunities to move back to the states and stumbled on an opportunity in Cayman. I have an offer in hand and am considering it seriously. On the upside, it's really pretty good money, roughly what I was making in the states, albeit virtually tax free. On the downside, the wife isn't super excited about life confined to an island. I've been there a few times and I like it. It's close enough we could keep the store here in Mexico and maybe she could also start some business there. Any other expats have experience or advice they could lend my way? --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631678,-87.070561
KB24 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Only take it if the position is one that will make you happy every morning getting up to do. Don't take it based on money. I place people for a living and the ones that take jobs for money only hardly ever end up happy and are always chasing that extra dollar.

Scdalak Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Its a universal problem we all have..... WIVES!!! As I am sure you know, they're never happy...
Puros Y Vino Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I first read this as moving to the "Grand Canyon" That's some tough living.

winelover Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Can you get into sailing, windsurfing, or snorkling? Maybe if you could fix a holiday there for Mrs Rush involving all the upside it might help.
Deemancpa Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I lived in Nassau and also commuted from Miami for awhile. Also, traveled throughout and family in the french West Indies. I like the Caymans. Super expensive, virtually safe and a nice place to live if you like island life. d

It also replaces the $ I left in the US plus we keep the store and our place here in playa. I think it means more cigars for me! --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631561,-87.070824
LGC Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Live in a beautiful place AND get paid for it? I would be happy to just have full time work right now...
demiurgic Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Rushman, curious if your wife get's island "cabin" fever and that is the reason she's not into the island life? Some people get a bit uneasy after a while on an island, surrounded by water all the time. I'm not one of them, but definitely sympathize with them! Living on an island can be so much fun, or end up like a BAD episode of 'lost'
jerseyjay Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Rush, This is Jay. We almost met at your shop back in April but you were away doing something else. Anyway ... Looks like you are originally from Houston, TX. If your wife is not happy w/ the 'island' style then Grand Cayman isn't going to fix the problem. No matter how you slice it, you have to consider her feelings. I personally wouldn't be thrilled if my wife forced me to live in the NYC. I love North West Jersey full of greenery and peaceful landscape. PS. Having said that, I would pack my bags, leave Jersey and move to Grand Cayman any minute if I had the opportunity. Good luck, pal !
khomeinist Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I'll take H-Town over an Island. But I don't like islands much.... Wtf happened to FOH Texas? Brazo. Unchain the wolves......

Living on an island can be so much fun, or end up like a BAD episode of 'lost' Honestly she doesn't know If she will get island fever, she grew up in Mexico city and lived in LA.....she wants to get in her car and drive if she feels like it. We will keep the house in Houston albeit rented out. We will also keep our apt and shop here in playa and travel as needed to eliminate island fever. Too good an oppty to pass up and she is now on board, for the moment! --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631735,-87.070626

Taqi Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I moved to Cayman 8 years ago from London - big city to small island is definitely culture shock. Island fever is inevitable but is easily treated with rum/cigar/hammock or short flight to Havana/Miami etc. It can be expensive, but upside is it is safe & easy to live here, once you get over the initial work permit paperwork.
CigarmanTim Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Wife and I are going on a company paid for vacation to the Ritz Carlton in Grand Cayman in January...can't wait to hit the LCDH. If your there, let's smoke one.

My understanding is the employer will take care of all the work permit stuff and get my wife a visa if it's needed (she is Mexican citizen). Wife's major complaint is housing. She doesn't want to feel like she is living in somebody else's house since most are already furnished. Plan is after a few months and we find the right place we will ship over some of our furniture. As far as the obvious (housing start up costs, shipping over or buying a car) what am I not thinking about that i will need to fund quickly? Thanks --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631728,-87.070565

tdlfoto Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 i've spent several months in Grand Cayman over the last decade. if you have a good opportunity, i'd say go for it! at the very least, try it out and see how it fits. as you've noted, if/when island fever hits you can always take a short flight to immerse yourselves in big city living or whatever you seek. I think of all the caribbean islands i've visited, Grand Cayman is the least "islandish" of them all....perhaps its the british influence, the money, or whatever, but i think its the blend of lifestyles. good luck to you!!

I know, right! It's like wrangling cats. Even the people who voted for the dad never even responded. I'll try again soon.
