demiurgic Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Caution - Long, personal and winding tale ahead before the meat of the matter is presented. Wrote it as a memoir besides a post I'd like a special box, or two, or three in honor of a personal accomplishment. Being an inventor who was not able to afford a Patent Attorney is any small business owner's nightmare. It presents all sorts of growth issues. And this problem was upon me. Ok, 'can I do it myself?' - the next question I ask when I cannot sub-contract or commission something Patent Application language is more cumbersome than law and I've studied business law (equally twisted, and the only class I've flunked in college.) Needless to say, with my back against the wall, I committed to undertaking this insane task. I was forced to embark on a long journey of studying Patent law, and neighboring patents around whom I would be working (tip toeing is the right word here for those who understand how this specific law works) Months of work (and procrastination) later, I eventually drafted my own patent application, a 20+ page Goliath with diagrams and all. A bonafide document, worthy of any decent attorney's salt! Yes, I was lucky enough to have an actual Patent Attorney as a consultant who would correct my stuff like a teacher grades an essay. Brilliant man whom I love as family and who steered me in the right direction with the patience of a zen monk. Finally, as of yesterday, a good range of our products are now 'Patent Pending' in the Dietary Supplement field of invention. IF and WHEN, the patent inspectors grant us the actual patent in the coming years, is another story of course. However, this celebration is not about winning a war, it's about winning a personal battle for someone who ABHORS the language of the law, and yet was able to accomplish something significant in such a field; no offense to those who delight in the language of the law I'm proud of myself for sticking this thru (being a Three Quarter Man - you know, the ones who don't put the dishes away after washing them) and to celebrate, what better gift to myself than great cigars along with a bottle of Macallan Scotch, my favorite sherry bomb. This is what we're working with gentlemen. Budget - USD $1000 give or take. (great deal considering a Patent Attorney costs USD $20,000) Experience - Have not tried ANY of the following in the shortlist and most Habanos. However, I'm coming from an extensive NC cigar smoking background and probably smoked 100 Habanos total. I do have Great taste and God knows I'm terrible at many things, but I never fail to recognize and enjoy exceptional sensory delight!.. a debaucherous bastard and proud of it. lol!! Favorite flavor Profile - in the areas of shortbread, milk and cream, honey, slightly floral and grassy, coffee and toasted fruit. (Not so much the woody, cedar, "the ubiquitous toasted tobacco" and green tea area). Nothing beats a good palate coating, rich distinguished taste, as per one's preference! Medium to full body please. Favorite Sizes - Petit Coronas, Corona, Lonsdale and Corona Gorda. I'm listing larger RG sizes below only to have one EPIC box of pure class, worthy of this accomplishment, so each time I light one from this particular box, I remember the stuff I'm made of, in case I forget We can mix and match the rest of course. Choices so far in that box which I'd like to be rated in the 93-95 range. Sir Winstons of course. Bolivar Gigantes (I'll take a good 50 cab if it can be found) Limitadas and Especials are those which I utterly ignore for the most part but will consider in this special case, such as, Vegas Robaina Maestros RA Grandes RA Superiores A double corona is a massive investment of time, literally unmatched in my life (how many guys eat or make love, or pray for 3 hours?) SO it would have to shine, and turn into flavors I love, to say the least. Obvious contenders are: P. Lusitanias VR Don Alejandro, SLR DC, RA Gigantes (only the box code Rob rate 95, doubt there's any left) Not even mentioning the Petit Coronas, Coronas, Corona Gordas, Dalias and Lonsdales here. Please chime in guys! Cheers! Also, I'm patient and willing to wait till Rob get's our shortlist in stock in the upcoming master case shipments. Each selection can go in the online cigar locker till need be. The key is to get a good balance of smokes. PS - Nice to be back in the FOH world after a hiatus.
Duxnutz Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 My vote, 50 cab of SLR Double Coronas for the large format, Cohiba Lancero for thin and epic smoke or maybe Fundadores. Only smoked one Sir Winston and got wood and smooth toasted tobacco if I remember clearly (might need to have another!). For $800 you could get at least two boxes of something really nice for twice the enjoyment!
pjansen Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 You could always get 4 boxes of magnum 46! They are amazing cigars and the most consistent cigar from HSA in my opinion.
bassman Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Cab of SLR DCs for sure. Love the 2007s & some are still around. For thinner smokes, Cohiba CEs (more consitant than the Lancero) and the new La Escepcion Selectos.
canadianbeaver Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Congratulations and this is such an amazing idea. I would go for a box of Ramon Allones Extras and a box of Cohiba lanceros. You just cannot go wrong with these and they are certainly a celebration!!
Puros Y Vino Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Congratulations It sounds like you went through a lot. So, why not reward yourself with: Cohiba Lanceros (totally agree with Lisa on this. Always exquisite. A classic) QDO Imperiales: An excellent Churchill. Bolivar Gold Medals. Partagas Lusitanias (treat yourself to a 10 count box at the very least) BHK54 As for SLR DC's. Having tried a few I would not recommend them. They smell great but they're quite bland.
partifan Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 You describe the Sir Winston and Esplendido profiles perfectly. $1000 will get you a box of both.
cckandb24 Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 My vote Party Lusis Cohiba sig4 or lanceros 50 cab of Por Laranaga PC
maverickdrinker Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Monte especial no. 1 Cohiba siglo II RASS or RASCC
mk05 Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 How long are you going to keep these? Smoke them right off the truck or are you aging them. It seems you already have previous inclinations, however.
demiurgic Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 Some excellent choices there! Thanks you guys! I hope to let them rest for a bit of course before touching them. 1-2 years for the bulk of those I can resist to get my paws on! I am not into LE's and RE's really (or Cohihba for that matter. But the votes for C. Lancero have me thinking!) Ok, Each ` is a vote. This is what you guys voted on. ``SLR DC (2007) `Sir Winston ````Cohiba lancero `Cohiba Sig IV `QDO Imperials `Boli GM's ``Lusis `PLPC `Monte Especial 1 `Cohiba Sig II `RASS/RASCC `Mag 46's `Cohiba Esplendidos `RA Extra
demiurgic Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 Ok, I'm leaning towards balance and it looks like... A "you did it!" box - Jan 08 box of Sir Winstons based on the FOH trilateral review , or SLR DC's (year depends on Rob and Smithy of course) A 10 box of Partagas Lusitanias thrown in for good measure. Left over cash, if any, goes to something smaller but classic like Boli PC and/or PLPC if I can get a good box. I have enough NC's for daily smokes so this part is fine. Yes, must try Montecristo Especial and Cohiba Lancero, and will fit those in at a later date. Perhaps when we win our patent, if not before Thank you everyone for your input and for allowing me to share our little success, which leads our budding company to it's wonderful destination! Aloha~
mk05 Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Generally speaking, Cohiba is a rough smoke if younger than 10 years - really meant to be aged for a long time. The lancero vitola, as you unknowingly surmised in the beginning, can be somewhat frustrating to unfamiliar smokers. The cigars you list aren't exactly very easy to find with proper age on them, and some of them are known to have flat years (ie Lusitanias, SLR & HdM DCs). I would personally look for cigars that are known to be decent performers young (2-5yrs age), and don't have such a steep maturing curve. To me, Mag 50s are decent now, are easy to procure with couple years on them, and won't change drastically. The recent Royal Robustos are going to be classics as well. However, since you want: shortbread, milk and cream, honey, slightly floral and grassy, coffee and toasted fruit. I would recommend (in order of your preferences) '07, '10, '12 JL#2, '98, '03 HdM Des Dieux cab, '07 PL Asia Robusto, '05 RyJ Ex #4, '09 SLR Asia Pacificos, pre '05 Punch SS#2 (or the Platinos and '09 Royal). Bolivar takes decades to show what you're looking for.
khomeinist Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Lots of good Cohiba under 10 years. Many think that these cigars (with the vanilla bean notes) are meant for the short-term consumer. Not saying that Cohiba is not for aging, only that recent production has been very approachable. A box each of corona Especiales, partagas 898, and Quai D'Orsay Imperiales would be my trio. Congrats on your accomplishment. I can relate to your story. Good work man....
demiurgic Posted September 9, 2012 Author Posted September 9, 2012 Thanks for the input guys! Nice to know that '12 JL No 2's are smoking good. Robusto's are a bit thick but not if they deliver the flavor. Would love to try Platinos if I can find them. I've been looking for Partagas Corona Especiales, apparently a great value smoke. Havent seen one on sites I trust. Totally agree on the Box of 898's. Time to invest in what I can find for now, and leave the rest of this amazing list for times when I can buy them and when they surface in the market. Cheers!
Guybrush Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 A good Saint Luis Rey Double Corona is perhaps one of the best buys in the market and a Cabinet of 50 looks really great for sure.
demiurgic Posted September 9, 2012 Author Posted September 9, 2012 Totally agree. It all comes down to what Rob has in stock ad recommends. Totally excited to see how this works out!
ramon_cojones Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I don't think you should invest in anything until you've smoked a lot more CCs otherwise it could very well end up being a waste of money for you since people are recommending what they like.
demiurgic Posted September 9, 2012 Author Posted September 9, 2012 Point well made ramon_cojones However, I think we live in such a social age, where we trust each other's opinions. I have smoked a few Habanos and thousands of other fine cigars. Besides, when I watch the video reviews with the three of them, I relate to what they're talking about with regard to flavor profile etc. SO you are right, I'm shopping socially here. But that's the fun of posts like there. It connects me to all of you and that's awesome (will be posting pictures here when the smokes come in) However it can't be a mistake to buy some of the best coming out of Habanos, having stated my flavor profile preference and taking Rob's advice. If so, then, I'm the cigar smoking monkey's uncle.
ramon_cojones Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 No need for big dollar cigars, get yourself at least one box of rass, psd4 and cce (though the last is a bit pricey). My three favorites and exquisite smokes.
demiurgic Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 No need for big dollar cigars, get yourself at least one box of rass, psd4 and cce (though the last is a bit pricey). My three favorites and exquisite smokes. Smoked RASS and psd4. They are good indeed! What's cce?
demiurgic Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 Called up Oz, somehow ended up speaking with Rob, Smithy and DI. Still feel like I know these guys after watching their videos for years now! Yes Di, I watch your videos too, pulling out little pieces of paper from a jar, even though I know my name isn't in there. And the boxes we are getting (for now)? *Drum Roll* OPA May 09 - Cab of P. Lusitanias New Stock - Monte 2. Rob swears they are epic, and it's a vitola which was not even in the running because I am not generally crazy about this stubby fella. ... Such is our confidence in Alaya A Big! 'Thank You' to every one who chimed in and helped us out! A lot of these cigars are still on the Must Try list, for another day
mk05 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 whatever happened to: Favorite flavor Profile - in the areas of shortbread, milk and cream, honey, slightly floral and grassy, coffee and toasted fruit. (Not so much the woody, cedar, "the ubiquitous toasted tobacco" and green tea area). Nothing beats a good palate coating, rich distinguished taste, as per one's preference!
