Hi there,

Turning the big 30 here in a week and trying to decide if I wanna buy something special to commemorate the day in coming years. Really want something top notch, age well etc but not much coming to mind.

Cohiba Robusto

Cohiba Siglo IV (VI is out of my budget as is esplendido)

Cohiba Coronas Especiales

Trinidad Fundadores

Behike 52s

H Upmann Sir Winston

Something else?

I generally smoke widely across all marcas but do enjoy the sweeter almost vanilla taste in a cigar but not very common.

Thoughts?

Cohiba CEs are wonderful cigars & I find them more consistant than the IVs. I get vanilla flavor in the Trini Robusto Ts & my 06 RyJ EX#3s, though comments here on the more recent EX#3s are that they are more tannic. If you like thinner cigars, go with the CCE. If you like them wide, the Trini T.

Monte Grande Edmundos are smoking great for me. Bigger format and with just a terrific chocolaty goodness to them.

For sweeter, the Por Larranaga's are money. I've got 2 boxes of the robustos that have been delicious.

So much love for SWs. Not my favorite at all...What do YOU like Duxnutz?

Good question Shlomo! I've loved some of the old Vegas Robainas I've had, smaller Upmanns and only had one Sir Winnie but it was pretty good. Smoking Epicures alot lately. Have only had a couple Cohibas and they were good but green.

I like the Por Larranaga suggestion as the profile really sits well with me, just at times it's pretty weak. I take it the Robusto is probably stronger blend? Anyone tried the Encantos?

Thanks heaps for the suggestions fellas.

This is an excellent point, I think too often people recommend cigars they like without knowing much about the OP. That last post helps a lot but I think the major dilemma facing new smokers is that it's nearly impossible to buy and smoke a great box right off the truck. Many of the iconic smokes needs months even years to age so members tend to suggest the newer more expensive fancy cigars that are hit or miss when new (ie behikes) so either way the OP will not have a superlative smoking experience. The only thing I can recommend is find aged stock lying around that a) has garnered good reviews b ) has some age on it and c) is of the same dna as the cigars OP enjoys.

If you like pl, then the asia pacific robustos would be a great idea (though I think they're overpriced). They have enough time on them where age isn't an issue and the profile is to your liking.

My advice:

Buy several boxes of 10 so you get a nice assortment of sticks :)

If you like Upmann get a 10 box of Mag 50's from 2008 if you can find them.

I would also recommend Bolivar Royal Coronas in the 10 pack Tubos, those have always been stellar.

Another good addition would be some Montecristo Petit Edmundos in the 10 box as would PSD4.

It looks like your budget is probably max $400, so that would get you all of those sticks with a few bucks to spare. However, if forced to keep with your list there is no way I could not recommend BHK52 from early to mid 2010 box dates. Those have been the finest cigars I have smoked to-date. But since those are all but gone, if it were me, I would have Rob find me nice box of either the Cohiba Siglo IV's or Sir Winston. Good luck!

I like this suggestion of buying a limited edition box of 10, like the Monte GE. May not be your specific cigar but the idea of getting 10 cigars to smoke each year from age 30-39 has a certain appeal to it. Then when you are 40 you can start over with something else.

Can't recommend anything lighter, sweet and vanilla. I tend to look for the exact opposite.
