Dbone Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I'm really close to taking a plunge on a box of these. They've had my eye for a while with the format... GC. What can I expect from the recent vintages? Does it have much of the classic RjY flavor? The short churchill I've had is a bit much with the sweet cherries... but not a bad smoke at all.
riazp Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Very curious to hear what members have to say about this cigar as well.
shrink Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I find the Ex 3 to be an "old school" Habano. Stronger and more tannic than any other RyJ vitola except the Cazadores. These take a few years to settle down. If you can wait, you'll be rewarded with a potent smoke, showing a classic fruity and peppery profile.
Scdalak Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I have smoked 4 of these in the last year, all were all singles I picked up at a LCDH in the Caribbean. R & J was the marca that got me into CC’s and although very very challenging as of late I try to stay loyal to brand. This cigar for me had a very consistent flavor profile to the marca with a bit more “spice” to it. It’s no Cazadores, but was peppery with the typical R&J Cherry “pop”. This coupled with my affinity to the Corona Gorda, I would recommend picking up a box of these as the smokes were fine and dandy!! That being said, getting a quality R & J HQ box in any vitola remains a challenge these days. Hope this helps, best of luck…
bassman Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Along with the Cazadore, the only RyJ that I buy. I find the EX#3 to have an enjoyable medium bodied sweeter spicy flavor, but I'm smoking cigars from 2006. The flavor profile has been pretty consistant from 2006 to now. I'd also be interested in hearing about more recent production.
greenpimp Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 These are probably my favorite in the RyJ lineup. I agree with Shrink (even though he now believes in aliens) on the profile and need to wait awhile for them to settle down. My youngest batch is from 2007, so I also wonder about more recent vintages. When young they were almost difficult to smoke for the first couple years, due to bitterness and high oil content which wonkified the burn and draw of the last half. Now, they smoke great.
partifan Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I've had a couple of '08s, and a couple of '10s. Truth be told I like the 4's better, even though I like the cg vitola more.

Matt, don't be so hard on the little guys. They're green, like you, and they enjoy a good Habanos now and again. One told me that he'd smoke 'em more often, but that his shipmates (saucermates?) object because the smoke quickly fills the craft. Hey, they love cigars so much that they even design some of their UFO's after 'em:
Dbone Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 Thanks everyone. I'm going to go for it. Not much negative except they need a few years to "sit down and shut up". Also, I guess that puts me in the same boat as the Alien / UFO guy, oh well LOL. Ill report back.
cottierm Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I've only discovered this vitola through some 2011. The only cigar I had which truly qualified as earthy. Worth the buy in my opinion. Best, Michel
Smallclub Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Truth be told I like the 4's better, even though I like the cg vitola more. +1. That said both suffer from inconsistencies, in the same box/cab... One great, then one bland, then one decent, and so on...
Dbone Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Yup, well they showed a little over a week ago. The box is from '09 so lucky me I was able to cheat time by a few years. First one was hard as a rock and suffered from being over filled, just way to tight.... tossed it. The second was better, but still a firm tug was needed to smoke. The opening was very smooth, doughy, creamy, with nearly no finish. As it warmed it had spice of a Partagas with a chewy creamy undertone, slight burnt wood flavor I picked up through the nose. Not really balanced very well and flavors would come and go. They've only been resting for a little over a week so I'll put them away for now. Great aroma within the box and the warpers are paper bag brown and oily. I'll report back a bit down the road.
TheLiquidGator Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Dbone, any update about how these are aging? Thanks
TonyAccardo Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I would be interested as well. From my experience and from what I've heard others say, they were rather just bland toasted tobacco and that's it. 1
