mk05 Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 Well it's my birthday. Lit up around 12am and popped some more throughout the day. Probably will be smoking heavy this whole Memorial weekend. Friday night after work I smoked a Viaje White Label Project, the original release - had a couple years and it definitely has become something nice. Saturday night at midnight, smoked some cigars with Paul Pierce and his cronies. A Partagas P1, followed by a Siglo VI 03 box I had cracked a couple months back on my roof. I still don't care for them. Really do not understand the whole Siglo series to be honest. I don't think it ages well. This is just my opinion. [TBU]

mk05 Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Well, the actual birthday went off with a bang with some interesting smokes. Grabbed a LGC MDO#2 from early '90s I had been meaning to smoke from my dry box. Walked back from the market 4 blocks out back to my place smoking this long thing, people were looking at me like I was smoking a gigantic cigarette - they really identify a "cigar" with "fat." (Wrote a review of the LGC below for anyone who is interested) For the next smoke, I met up with Yoruba Hacker and finally cracked the H Upmann Noella jar . After that, I cracked another box of the Monte GEs, which was just as good as the last however many boxes I've been through. Very consistent, not very Monte, but good nonetheless. To cap the night, I closed it with a Super Partagas that was sitting in my pocket. LGC MDO#2 ~'90 This cigar is pretty old, covered in plume and looks more like Adria's candied raspberry. I had to wipe most of it off with a damp towel. Cold draw is neutral like a newspaper. Nothing remarkable. The initial flavors, are anything but. Extremely refined balance dances across the roof of the mouth to the nose. The distinct floral, parfum strength of younger LGC has now toned down - and fused with the LGC flavor I love. A flavor which I can only describe as a Weetabix. That initial burst subsides and what is left on the palate is a very nice, elegant sweetness. Not overpowering like a young SLR regios or a Montecristo. No, this is just a touch of white tea with a drop of honey. Kind of like an old Fonseca. Really picks up the pace when you are halfway. Flavors pop a bit more - a bit juicier if you will. I popped a Krug, and it is complementing the subtle back notes well. Its worth noting the difference the LGCs take on after the 10-15 yr mark. They are excellent young with power, and after the infamous confused period, it really comes to its own. I don't think this is over the hill at all, especially how the back end performs. It is very juicy at the end. Will be interesting to see how this will be in 5yrs. Smoke doesn't get hot even if you abuse the draw. It was quite an enjoyable smoke.
Yoruba Hacker Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Appreciate you generously sharing that Noella. Felt like it was MY birthday. Really very enjoyable, with mine exhibiting a luxurious cotton candy mouthfeel to the smoke. Best cigar I've had in a while. Very rich tasting, like the old Mag 46s from back in the day (when they used to actually be good). Most striking was that it smoked a lot older than it was. Looked at the ash several times closely and it was like a striped eraser. Very complete combustion. Haven't dropped any money on these yet myself, as I don't pay as much attention to jars and regionals, but for any of you guys who like to go that route, I highly reccommend these. Highly qualified of course, as I may have smoked the one cigar that was the best of the batch. But based soley on this one experience, with the flavor and body it expressed, if the rest are anything like this one, I'm guessing these will be great aging cigars. Happy birthday.
