beamer Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Like the title says, I'm curious to hear about your favourite cigar in the aforementioned violas. I realize they are all slightly different sizes, but they're similar enough for what I'm looking for. I love my des Dieux, Boli GM, or (lately) Partagas 898 when I'm reading a book. What can you recommend to me in a similar size? And why? Does it capture the essence of the brand? Known for great construction or flavor or both? It doesn't need to be different than the three I mentioned; You may just talk me in to another box. Thanks!
cigcars Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 How about Montecristo No.1, Vegas Robaina Classico, (and if it's still in existence) Punch Super Selection No. 1.
thechenman Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Partagas 858. Simply awesome. Wood notes, dark coffee, earth, pepper, spice, power, complexity, occasional hints of sweetness. That about says it all.
Lotusguy Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I'd have to pick the LGC MdO #2 - never had a bad one (caveat: Never had one that didn't have at least 5 years on it). Perfect construction, fruity, sweet, and nutty. Unfortunately, very small production quantities and they tend to get snapped up quickly. The 898 presentation doesn't hurt the eyes either.
beamer Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 Thanks for the suggestions! I figured the 898 would be a popular choice. Is the Siglo III worth considering?
mazolaman Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Just working my way through a 10 box of Monte no 1. Excellent, best Montes I've had, that great coffee, chocolate flavour. Cervantes is just about my favourite size. R y J Cazadores are fantastic. Boli GM are great. And the dark horse....Fonseca no 1...great cigar, mild/medium, very floral.
hsmunoz Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I am a big fan of this size some of my favorites are Sig V Boli Immenso's and Longsdales Dip 1 Fonseca 1 and the Trini ingenio is smoking deliciously these days!
Rushman Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Thanks for the suggestions! I figured the 898 would be a popular choice. Is the Siglo III worth considering? Let you know. Just got a box for the shelves. Gonna smoke one this week and see. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.630109,-87.069736
Wil Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Sorry, can't help you. Boli GM, Des Dieux and (especially) Party 898 are my favourites too! Have heard really good things about Monte 1s latetly, so very keen to try. Dalia and cervantes have become my favourite sizes.
dan5974 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Too bad most are gone. The Partagas 898 is my favorite and Monte #1 is awesome when its on.A lot of them are gone and I'll never get the chance to try them.I was thinking about these sizes that are still in current production ealier tonight. There are only 2 cervantes still in production-Monte #1 and RyJ Cedro deluxe#1,3 Dalias-Party 898,Siglo 5,and LGC Medialle dr oro #2,corona grandes-Siglo 3 and Monte tubos.HSA marketing strategies are just sad.
investandprosper Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Partagas 898, Bolivar Lonsdale, Bolivar GM, and Siglo III are excellent.
PigFish Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Partagas Seleccion Privada Diplomatico #1 ERdM Lonsdale Upmann Lonsdale RG Lonsdale Party Lonsdale... Oh, that's right! It makes more sense to store tobacco on a shelf than it does to roll a few thousand of these for people like me to continue to enjoy and for some people to try for the first time. Just ignore me... H SA does! -The Pig

almudawi Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I have recently fallen in love with the Crevante/Dalia vitola.. Sadly I discovered this at the wrong end of business.. So my list will be a bit limited: 1- Partagas 898 (varnished): great Partagas flavors plus cream 2- HdM Des Dieux: sweet spices and dried figs 3- Bolivar inmensas: a thin bolivar royal corona with a bit of umph 4- Cohiba Siglo V: refined cohiba profile 5- Bolivar GMs: gorgous spicy smoke I have a cabinet of PL Encantos but haven't tried these yet. I am aging them for a bit.. And tracking a couple of cabs of LGC #2
beamer Posted May 2, 2012 Author Posted May 2, 2012 I guess I need to revisit the PL Encantos. I wasn't impressed with the first two I had. Seems like most of these can be tough to find. And the easy ones to find, des Dieux and 898, I already love. Ah, silly hobby.
Michel1968 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Somehow I've loved all the examples of the vitola's you mention. Some more, some less but generally they just 'do' it. Sadly we're at a stage where there's no longer the question of 'which is best?' but get them while they last... Topping my books: Party Seleccion Privada, Punch SS#1, des Dieux, Diplo#1
