CaptainQuintero Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 You've overlooked one major point Mr Piggy, by the time the next great change in cigar happens and the popularity of the robustos is on the wane, none of us will be allowed to smoke cigars anymore unless we live out in international waters anyway!
PigFish Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 You've overlooked one major point Mr Piggy, by the time the next great change in cigar happens and the popularity of the robustos is on the wane, none of us will be allowed to smoke cigars anymore unless we live out in international waters anyway! I am a fighter my friend. If I wallowed in a "sky is falling" mindset, I would not bother posting at all! They can pry my last cigar out of my clammy dead little mitten if they want them badly enough. Bringing in new smokers is what the model needs. I have not missed this at all. I have suggested it! H SA et al has missed it, but I have not! I try to convert people. I admit it. When I don't like the way things are going, I talk to people. I talk my position and edify people. I try to get people to see what I see and then they make up their own minds about it. This is what I do. Some see me as insightful... others as full of ****! When you opine you open yourself up to criticism. I am okay with that. I try to opine responsibly, I play the cards I get. Cheers. -Piggy
mazolaman Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 OH MY GOD... I JUST FOUND MY LOST 15TH COUSIN, once removed by pillage and rape!!! I never said I liked you!!! -LOL (I am just kidding of course) -Ray If we're 15th cousins, can we still get married?
Ken Gargett Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 For me the main thing is getting a great cigar, that is it. I for one would love to see cuban tobacco blended with the best that other countries offer. And as someone in the cigar industry said to me "how do you know you haven't tried one already?" Still would be sad to see some of the great old brands go. if you come from new zealand, it is compulsory.
PigFish Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 If we're 15th cousins, can we still get married? Is that a double coronas in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?
canadianbeaver Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 So we were having a fireside chat about this the other night and we had some simple top of mind concepts about this (we are simple folk what can I tell you). Matthew is a CEO and is all business... he only thinks in financial terms, not in marcas, vitolas, cigar quality, etc etc. There are only so many cigar leaves per year on the Island of Cuba every year and so many rollers. You can not get these leaves anywhere else and that is why these cigars are coveted around the world. If embargo is lifted, demand goes up, supply goes down, prices go up. Get your mitts on stogies, especially your favorites, when you feel the end is near. That's about it. Lisa

The fact remains that the USA is a huge market of H SA et al already. Saying that the USA is not a market for the Cuban cigar is like saying it is not a market for marijuana or cocaine for the same reasons. Plainly there are people who like and prefer NC cigars. I don't know if this will change. People have different tastes. There will be legal names to fight in court and then there will be people using undisputed names, now subject to doing business in the USA as representatives of H SA that will likely be sued for using their disputed names outside of the USA. I am really surprised that this has not happened already. Perhaps these names are actually being licensed by H SA and they are not telling anyone. There is always a good reason to buy a good cigar if it is what you like and the price is right. The hell with the embargo! Just my 2cts. -Piggy
CaptainQuintero Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I could be wrong but a country can nationalise any company/asset it wishes to legally and so legally, it would own the copyright for say Upmann or RYJ. I think the only reason the NC brands have popped up in the US is because the US courts don't recognise the Cuban government's authority? Eg there are no NC cuban brands in the UK (where the Cuban Government is recognised) so for example the NC RYJ, Punch, Partagas black label, Cohiba red/black dots etc cannot be imported here legally. So if I am right on the above points (I may not be!) any opening up of the cuban brands to the US I would presume would have to include the US courts recognising the legality of HSA's Cuban brands and the NC companies would have to change their names regardless of if they are the decendents of the original brand owners. That could also be why HSA has steadily been removing individual's names from bands and boxes in their catalogue (So the NC companies cannot claim any family name lawsuits)
