Ophidion Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I was wondering what everyone liked for their favorite larger vitolas? I am quite partial to the Vegas Robania Don Alejandro myself as well as the Hoyo Double Corona. I still have a few that I haven't tried yet in my humi (Sir Winston, RA Gigante, Cohiba ESP) but I am curious as to what everyone else likes for their bigger cigars. My smoking friends all like the robusto and pyramid size and I seem to be the odd man out when it comes to my preferred vitolas (my favorites are corona gorda, robusto, lancero, DC, lonsdale). Here is my tray of "stuff I need to smoke before I up and buy another box + stuff I am about to run out of" (the RH was really low because I opened it for a while to take pictures): And this is where that tray resides:
vanbellc Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I like the HdM DCs for a bigger smoke. I haven't had the Upmann Sir Winston yet, but always hear great things.
brazoseagle Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 If you are including the Sir Winston as a "Big Smoke" than easily that and the Partagas 8-9-8 are at the tops!
DougB Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Sir Winnies Lusitanias Esplendidos All have been awesome to me.
davidsan Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Punch Double Corona has been my fav bigger smoke of late.
joshb Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 No thread drift intended, but what kind of cabinet do you have there? Looks very cool, I'd love to see more pics if you have them.
ptrthgr8 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I like the SC Murallas - I've got a box from 2007 that's outstanding. Cohiba Siglo VI is also very good, IMO. I've also got a box of Lusis from 2009 that are getting me all hot and bothered. I definitely prefer the bigger sticks. The smaller ones can obviously be very good too, but the larger smokes just really make me all sorts of happy. Cheers, ~ Greg ~
maverickdrinker Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 My choices would be Cohiba siglo vi, lancero and esplendidos Ramon Allones gigantes Bolivar gigantes
JohnLeupp Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 SLR DCs Punch DCs Partagas Lusitania San Cristbal Muralla Next tier Vegas Robainia Don Alejandro Hoyo De Monterrey Don Alejandro Those are what I would classify as Big Smokes. The next tier would be Churchills Bolivar Coronas Gigantea H Upmann Sir Winston Cohiba Esplendido Romeo y Julieta Churchill - Gold band only. The newer ones are crap. I am partial to the Double Corona vitola, especially on the golf course. They are special smokes for someone who has the time. I love the top four. Had an SLR today.
JohnLeupp Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Oops. The HDM is a DC of courxe. Too much tequila.
Rushman Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 SLR DC when they are aged well like 5 years minimum, prefer much longer. Party Lusi's when they are "on".
ramon_cojones Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 esplendido really, i find dcs pretty uninteresting
markmurase Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Sir Winnies Lusitanias Esplendidos All have been awesome to me. Another vote for these 3. I love the Lusi and Sir Winnie but had a great 09 Esplendido last night. The Lusi and Sir Winnie are more consistent but at their best, all are fantastic. PS: I love your humidor, Ophidion. Looks great.
mazolaman Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 For a biggish smoke- Bolivar Gold medal R Y J Cazadores Fonseca No 1 All roughly cervantes sized For a big big smoke- Cuaba salomones.
isa Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Nice pics there - no comments on the thread topic, as i dont smoke biggies often
Ophidion Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 The humidor is one I got off of Craigslist last summer. The only info I could find on it is that it is a Carmac humidor made for Nat Sherman in 1986. It has a refrigeration unit on the back which is enclosed and I have snuck a cigar oasis XL in there as well. It's solid wood construction, about 3x3x3 and weighs a lot. It's my baby and I pad about 1/5 the cost of what it cost in 1986. A truly awesome CL find.
gersonmorelli Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 HDMDC's, Cohiba Sublimes. I love a DC for the simple fact that it wasn't made for you to pay attention entirely to your smokeingexperience. It's a great cigar for those moments where you want to have a good conversation, or do something else such as fishing, golfing, etc... Love a good HdM DC (although I haven't had a good recent production one) and SLR DC (first one I tried was the 07s and they are getting better and better). RA Gigantes have been hit or miss and the VR Don Alejandros I've had needed some serious aging. Sorry for the thread hijack, but has anyone had a Cohiba Sublime recently?? I have 5 or 6 singles in my humidor and haven't smoked one for at least 4 years.
CaptainQuintero Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 More love for that humidor, it's beautiful! I may try to recreate that with my cowboy-workman woodworking skills! Oh and Sir Winston.
winelover Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Favourite DC I've tried is the Lusitania. Favourite churchill is the Bolivar Corona Gigantes. I'd like to try the HUSW although I'd really love to try an aged Monarca even more!
Scdalak Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 HDMDCs R&J Wide Churchills. Alot of tobacco but mild creamy smokes. Great with cup of coffee.
JohnLeupp Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I love the SLRs, Punch's and Lusis. Does the RA Gigante belong in the same discussion as these? The PSP box on the LFTH looks very tempting, but I haven't seemed to find folks who either rave about them or prefer them to the three above. At their finest, I think Lusis are the best but I have found the quality variable.
partifan Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 The SLR DC from 01 is an amazing smoke. Lusi's are also quite good, but I'd give the nod to the 898 for my favorite. The Sir Winnie is the best churchill I've had. If you can track down SLR lonsdales, they are quite good.
Colt45 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I'm not a big DC fan, but in that format I don't mind the Hoyo. The churchill is one of my favorite formats - in this size I like the Hoyo, Upmann Sir Winston, and Bolivar Corona Gigantes.
