Jason55555 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 This is a Newbie review so take it easy on me LOL, I’ve seen a couple of post on El Dorado Rum and thought I do a review on it. As you can see I’ve got three bottles ranging in years ex 6yr 12yr and 21yr (25yr coming in 4 weeks from Guyana, price is a steal in Guyana compared to the LCBO in Toronto) The El Dorado I’m doing this week is the 12yr I’ll do a review every week leading up to the crem della crem the 25yr old. 12yr old is my favourite rum and a long time winner of IWSC(International Wine & Spirit Competition) recently the 12yr old won the IWSC Gold & Best in Class 2011. The Pour & Glass Amazing nose to this rum it has a two-tone hue as you can see it benefits from Demerara Distillers Wooden Pot Stills which are the last two original operating in the world they are over 250 years old Therefore the wood instils the taste of the rums over the years as well as the aged wood giving this rum an amazing aroma and colour. Give this rum a swirl in the glass and you get beautiful long legs around the glass. The Smell & Top Notes– Burned Sugar Cane, Molasses, Vanilla, Spices, Oak The first thing that hits you is the sweetness this rum is very sweet which might turn off some people but I believe that’s it not a overpowering sweetness because the initial sweetness is quickly merged by oak spices and vanilla. In the mouth the cane sugar, vanilla, orange peel ,citrus, and oak are all balanced providing a great taste. The 12yr old has a very long spice/vanilla finish which coats the mouth leaving an oily finish. (Not sure oily is the right term to describe the finish but this is my first review lol) This is the perfect sipping run and the first thing I grab when I want rum with a cigar. The cigar I’m having is the Saint Luis Rey Regios. I Know sweat rum sweat cigar? I’ve found that younger rums that are less sweet and have more of a alcohol spice taste ruin the taste of my cigars on my pallet. The sweetness and spicy finish I believe complements the sweetness found in the Regios but that’s just my preference and maybe my inexperience lol. Lastly to enjoy this rum even more throw a single ice cube into your glass, the water will mellow out some sweetness and bring out some of the other hidden notes like cinnamon. Thanks for reading 6yr ,21yr , and lastly l 25yr old coming soon
riazp Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 What no El Dorado 15? lol. Nice review, cool pictures man
Jason55555 Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 Np Thanxxx, if you live in Ontario area pick 12yr old up ASAP takes cigars to that next level and cost is only 35 for a bottle! In regards to why I don't have the 15 LOL it is because I think the 12 is better 15 taste almost the same minus the cane sweetness.
Wil Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Great stuff! Nice to see some liquor reviews on here - especially rum!
TWalker Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Good review, I'm enjoying a glass do ED12 right now. It's a great rum for sure. Definitely a good one for the price.
phoenix Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I just got in some Flor de Cana 18 yo. from Nicaragua and it's hands down the best Rum I've ever had. Smooth and silky like no other. Forget Cuban. For the price of 1 x Santiago de Cuba 25 Y.O Anejo you can almost get a case of the Flor de Cana 18. I really like the El Dorado 12. Given that you do as well, I'm certain you will also like the Flor de Cana 18! If you get a chance to try some-- let me know what you think
davidsan Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Great review. Looks nice! Wonder if I can pick some of this stuff up in Oz.
LGC Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 El Dorado and La Flor de Cana are great rums. My all time favorite rum is Ron Zacapa 23 from Guatemala... only the original production in the bottle with the full weave basket.
Jason55555 Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 I really like the El Dorado 12. Given that you do as well, I'm certain you will also like the Flor de Cana 18!
