BobLobLaw Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 A friend and I were amazed at how great the difference in wrapper color there was between boxes of 2006 Cohiba Piramides. We took the lightest wrapper box and the darkest and split it so we each had one box with both types for future comparison. The difference is striking.

cigcars Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Lights for me. I don't know how to take Cuba's attempts at Maduros...they don't "do it" for me like their regulars
jedipastor Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 But the ones on the left aren't supposed to be "maduros" right? Isn't this just "wrapper variation?" Even so, that's a big variation, especially for an EL. So did you smoke one of each? Were they different? I'm always curious to see if wrapper variation actually makes a difference in the stick as it smokes.
bolivr Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Lights for me. I don't know how to take Cuba's attempts at Maduros...they don't "do it" for me like their regulars Same here, still coming to terms with the little Secretos I have. Don't seem to have the richness of NC maduros, the CCs are lighter, drier flavours. Good to have as something different in the humi though
BobLobLaw Posted August 8, 2011 Author Posted August 8, 2011 Looking at the uploaded picture the contrast is not as great as in person. The darker one is not a maduro version but just wrapper variation between boxes. I have not yet broken into the box to compare the two. Was considering it when I read a recent review that felt the cigars were in a sick period and needed more time. Granted that was only one persons opinion, but I smoke so infrequently and have so much to try that I decided why risk it. A side by side comparison is on my list though! Can't decide if I would go back to back on the same day, consecutive days, or try smoking both at once.
frenchkiwi Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Can't decide if I would go back to back on the same day, consecutive days, or try smoking both at once. I vote for same day at the same time (i.e. simultaneously; not smoking a whole one, then the other) if you really just want to figure out the difference. Cuts down the variables. Maybe do it with a fellow aficionado to get a 2nd opinion and help you keep'em both going. Or just wait until the day I knock on your door... look forward to your results!
Habanos2000 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I've seen wrapper shade variations like this in the past, although not to this extent on the Cohiba line. I remember getting Party SD4's that were dark chocolate, which I think look great with the red band. And then more recently I have boxes that are definately lighter in shade. But the boxes themselves are consistent in color and I think that's what they aim for. A difference in flavor will be an interesting experiment. While I don't believe the color variations you're seeing were intentional, my money is on the cigars tasting pretty similar. let us know!
Dbone Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Great topic and picture mate. I'm going to be interested on the side-by-side review.
Colt45 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 My box is like your darks - I like the lights myself. If you really want to get fancy with a side by side taste comparison, smoke near a half of each at the same time, then swap wrappers
tinknocker924 Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 for me the darker the better i love the oily sheen on a dark wrapper..
El Presidente Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 The darker wrappers were the more "A typical" Cohiba Piramide LE and what they were aiming for. Looking forward to your comparison!
BobLobLaw Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 I am currently in the midst of another blind test of ten robustos. I am an infrequent smoker so this will take me awhile. However, I will be sure to post the light vs dark comparison when it happens. I am now also thinking I will wait until I can grab my buddy with the other light/dark box so we can get two comparisons at the same time! It may be awhile, but when it happens I will for sure post.
