El Presidente Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I received a question this morning on the "History of Box Pressed Cigars" We all know how box pressed cigars are formed but can anyone enlighten us as to the "History" of the Box Press presentation? Why etal. Input would be much appreciated
Colt45 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 WIth regards to Cuban cigars, I've always thought it was nothing more than an incidental byproduct of packaging two layers of cigars in dress boxes which are slightly smaller in height than the layers?
livedavid Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I had also wondered this and had little luck in finding the true origin. I assumed it was originally a utilitarian decision made to save space. Other benefits may have been realized at a later date. I do know that the Padron 1964 Anniversary was the first non-Cuban cigar to be box pressed. But that is all I know.
Dbone Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 It was probably designed by a carpenter, maybe the brother to the one who made the carpenter pencil. Simple concept, make it square and it won't roll away when you set it down.
CaptainQuintero Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Make it square so they don't roll around and get damaged in transit across long distances?
Deemancpa Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 My guess: the cigar takes the shape of the flat box once packed and the humidity levels in the cigar will help form the shape.D
dicko Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 no answer from me, but I like the tactile aspect of the box press!

SCgarman Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 I read somewhere cigars were box pressed so when the torcedor was working at his rolling table, he could smoke a cigar and set it down and the flattened sides would keep his lit cigar from rolling off the table and onto the floor. Sounds like a good hypothesis to me!

Sounds like a good hypothesis to me! I've heard this as well, but that would mean that he "rolled" a box pressed cigar. I still think it's just a calculation mistake that stuck

I still think it's just a calculation mistake that stuck Q: Are you finished rolling the Corona Gordas? A: Yes sir I am! Q: Why are they not boxed yet? A: Sir, all we have are these boxes for Coronas! Q: Why would you let that stop you? A: They don't fit sir!!! Q: Don't fit!!! You watch, they'll fit! -Piggy
