Last time I saw one in a CC was about 4 years ago, on a gifted cigar I dumped on the way home.

I freeze everything that comes through the door in my trusted deep freezer for two days.

balcony? yesterday? pouring out of the box you brought for a video?

I always love in the review videos when I've seen you start smacking the box talking about beetles.

Like Andy I brought home one or two customs rolls from Cuba in February ;) Of the --- cigars I brought home I had two cigars from one top roller with holes (but no sign of a beetle) which I froze. Got robustos from a popular house roller in Mirimar which were excellent, but had live beetles on board (holes, a beetle, beetle faeces, the whole shebang.) Quarantined them, froze all the cigars, have had no isses since.

In terms of regualr production cigars bought off the island, I've never had a problem. I have had a lot of mites (which I posted about here beofre.) The main issue seems to be shops that keep their humidors too wet. Anthing that I buy now is either frozen befroe it's introduced to the rest of the cigars, or quarantined in a sererate humidor.

Got dragged to a shop in Melbourne earlier this year by a mate who wanted to try a few and to kill time bought a Partagas 898.

Got it home in a sealed bag and left it out as I was going to smoke it with said mate a few hours later.

Went to light it and WTF yep a Beetle hole. Was mighty pissed and well the cigar tasted crap anyhow. ;)

Whenever I see threads like this I always open them hoping to find a long list of Never... Never... Never.... I've never seen any in my 2 years of cigar smoking and I don't freeze anything (because my freezer is always full) but it's always a nagging worry in the back of my head. How often to people go through their collections checking for beetles?

My short answer is "never". I have never seen any in my personal collection. I have seen them in local NC B&M shops and I received some Monte 4's around 2005 (before i found this place!) that had several holes in them. I don't freeze anything but do "quarantine" all new shipments for several months. I also don't do temp control. My humidor is in the coolest place of my house and stays 67-69F during the winter months and 69-71F during the summer months.

Two weeks ago and it was isolated to a single cigar. so far no problems.

About a month ago unfortunately. I also froze everything after cleaning out the dust and bugs from the boxes. Didn't bother freezing my NC's since I don't have that many I would be heartbroken about losing. Plus it makes more room for the good stuff!

The last time I saw one bug live was about three months ago. Froze my cigars.

Before that there were many holes in plastic tubed Canarian cigars in December 2009. Froze those tubes and other cigars from the same shipment.

Saw also three living bastards in July 2007 when they flew out from my humidor when I was opening it. Killed two by crushing them, one escaped. Froze all of my cigars. The origin of those beetles was a Cuban box from OCT06.

In every case no further damage was done - I have been quick enough (or am I paranoid enough?). I feel that I am getting used to beetles. Hmmm - beetles seem to appear on odd years... ;)

I've heard someone saying that freezing one time doesn't make cigars bad, but if frozen twice it's not good. That made me thinking about HSA's freezing operation. If I froze cigars once, it would be their second time... Is it true or just a rumour, I don't know. I am currently having some cigars that I have frozen twice. I think I smoke one today for a test.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I always believed hatching conditions were a function of rh and temp not temp alone. I can't imagine dry conditions being conducive to incubation of the eggs.

To those who have had them what was your rh like in your box/cabinet?

Glad to know. Just moved in with Fiance. Temps in the basement don't get above 70, but they get close to it. I used to keep things down around 65.

At the first time I think hatching had happened before I put the cigars into my humidor. It took less than a week after I had returned from a journey (with new cigars) for the beetles to appear. Back then I didn't measure temperature and humidity was max.70RH.

The second time, that's this year, temperature was 19ºC and humidity 70RH. I'm not sure if they hatched before or after getting into my humidor. Sometimes temperature gets very high during transportation, just for an example.

I've only ever seen beetle holes...never a dead or live beetle though. Last hole I saw was a little over a year ago in a RGCE.

I have seen a beetle hole but not live ones. The hole was actually in a custom which will remain nameless.
