I have the chance to get hold of a box of these.

was 2000 a good year for the 898 v's?

Are they likely to be as good as the 01's I missed out on in today's LFTH? (darn it!)

Really grateful for anybody's experiences/thoughts on this.

I've PM'd Rob and Smithy about this as well.

Cheers,

Paul

2000 is generally considered a tough year for CCs in terms of construction, but who is really to say. There are plenty of BOTLs out there who have had great cigars from the Cigar Boom era. However, I would think that your chances of getting a dud would be higher from this time period...if the price is right, I'd still go for it as they have some real nice age on them. Sometimes in life, you just have to take somce chances. Who knows, you may be rewarded for it.

I wouldn't even consider buying a box from this year. Overall, a disappointing year, and the risk of tight draws in a 43 ring guage were increased by the high number of inexperienced rollers at the time.

A panel of Habanos experts, convened in Havana during the 2008 Festival, unanimously judged the 2008 Partagas 898's to be superior to 1998's which were kept under ideal conditions. When you consider that the best Partagas 898's have been from 2006 on, why buy anything else?

I would consider '00 but it depends on price. While enjoying 898NV I had a poor overall experience with the 898V from '98. While I would thoroughly enjoy the good ones there were a lot of duds in the mix. I was buying EMS cigars, distributed by H&F at the time. I would not pay a premium due to the stigma of the year. While the stigma has merit, it is not sufficient in my mind to prejudice my opinion about the entire period, but as a good shopper I am happy to use such information to my advantage.

If the cost of the cigars is in the neighborhood of current production, I would buy current production. If I could get a sweet deal, then I would take the chance. -Piggy

I have to say that this discussion is making me a bit concerned about the wisdom of grabbing the 01's from yesterdays vintage offerings. Should I be concerned?

Not if you liked the price you paid for them...

I have specifically not looked at the price to keep my bias out of it. We are all different people mate and that bleeds across, value, taste, politics... and even whom we consider to be beautiful. If you want the cigars and think that this might be your last opportunity to find them why second guess yourself?

There are some people that rain on '01 vintage cigars. Frankly the best lonsdales that I have consistently ever experienced were '01 Upmann lonsdales and '99 and '00 Party Seleccion Privadas. While I find it true that '01 did have some issues with plugged cigars I have found that '01 lonsdales have been some of the best cigars that I have ever smoked. This is a generalization based on my empirical experience and my love for lonsdales and it won't affect the taste of the cigars that have your name on them, not one iota. Are they worth the money? That is up to you and the seller but no one is going to be able to tell you whether the cigars are good or not. One thing that you know for sure; they have 10 years of age on them and if you think that the age will positively affect the cigars then you are 10 years closer to your goal. -Piggy

Get them to check the box you are looking at and comment upon it.

Aged boxes are interesting animals. Some are brilliant, some average and some are poor (and often passed over for a reason). Box codes mean zilch.

I can't wait to try one of these 898s. I have one in the humidor which was gifted to me and just have not fired it up yet. Will I become an 898 convert? Time will tell.

I beg to disagree (the only excuse is that it was hand picked by a close friend):
