Received some goodies today. Nice little Valentine's gift to myself.

Upon opening the Boli PC, i was blown away by how strong the ammonia smell still is. Made me sneeze repeatedly.

Don't think i remember the last time i smelled something so ammoniac.

What should i do? Smoke one right away anyways (what i normally do to any newly arrived box)? Or chuck them into a deep corner of the cooler and wait until the smell is completely gone.

Cant really help you re the ammonia, but I actually smoked an Boli PC with the exact same code as yours yesterday when visiting a friend. It was superb all the way down to the nub!

Furthermore another friend also has a box with this code and he thinks that they are top of the line.

Do I need to say that both boxes came from the czar? :whip:

Aiz, if I recollect correctly, didn't you say a bit ago that you've never experienced cigars with the ammonia smell? I seem to remember us having a conversation about it a while ago, and you saying that you hadn't experienced this at all before, and weren't sure what everyone was making a big deal about. (Sorry, that sounds weird to read - don't misunderstand, I don't mean to sound rude when it's put that way, that's not my insinuation at all).

But, if this is your first experience with the dreaded A-bomb.....W-E-L-C-O-M-E!!!! LOL. :whip:

Me myself? I'd close 'em up, and tuck them away in a long-term cooler, away from some of your current smoking stock, and let them sit and marinate for a while. I wouldn't go near them for 6 months or so. However, when I have been unfortunately gifted with this extra goodie in my fresh boxes, I have also taken a single stick out and let it sit in my singles drawer for 24-72 hours, and then smoked it. I've found that the smell is pretty much gone at that point, enough to smoke that single, to at least have a benchmark for the 6 month point.

Do either. But, if you already have somewhat of a "benchmark" memory profile of these recent-run Boli PCs, and so you wouldn't need to smoke a single, I'd just tuck them away for 4-6 months.

Oh, i've noticed ammonia before, but not like this.

The last time i smelled something this intense was in the labs in school!

Okay, thanks for the clarification then. Sorry - again, didn't mean it to sound rude or snotty at all.

If it's that intense, maybe you just struck the lottery, and hit that one or two week period when it's at its most intense, anywhere right around that 6 month mark, give or take a few (generally speaking, that's what I've experienced anyway - not meaning for this to start up a discussion again about the "nasty" period, etc.).

But, since they're within that initial timeline, then I wouldn't worry about it, and would just tuck it away for 6 months (maybe, if you're brave, revisit them in 3 if you want - can't hurt to check them out).

If they were older than a year by the box code, and depending on the reputability of the retailer, I might be worried about this as a potential sign of off-gassing by super-fresh, recently-rolled smokes - in essence, a worry about potential fakes. But, if they're from a quality source, and the box code is indeed legit and within the year, then no harm no foul.

If the odour worries you that much, and depending on if you have separate storage humidors (like a main cabinet and a larger cooler-dor, like I do), then you could also put the box in a separate tupper-dor or large ziplock bag in your main humidor, if it worries you that much.

Oh not really worried too much about the smell. More curious than anything.

I'm probably going to smoke one right away. Just to satisfy my curiousity.

Only one way to find out my friend. I say smoke one and go from there. Let us know how it goes.

*SEND IT BACK AND GET A REFUND or a replacement, man! Your cigars are not supposed to have that noticeable a scent of ammonia even if sent out too soon from the factory. For what you've paid and expect to get, as far as a luxury, prized product...GET THAT REFUND! Don't even try smoking ONE or especially storing them in your humidor to mess IT up. That seems like it could have been stored in the seller's place in a bad location or area.:2thumbs:

I've had BBF's with an amoniaic aroma,which were unsmokeable.........untill about 8 months later,even better a year later.

I usually view it as a good sign...longer term. I also notice that you are in Malaysia and I'd imagine that it's hot as hell there now. I typically notice the ammonia smell in fresh boxes increases when i receive a box in the dead heat of summer. I think you'll have some great cigars there and the 30 day rest period with proper temp/rh should knock most of the scent off.

Tuck them away. No ammonia, but I got a HQ box from ABR 10 that are truly in a sick period. My 07s are superb. I'll revisit the 10s when the 07s are gone.

No offense intended, but smoking a cigar from a box that reeks of ammonia seems not only futile, but stupid, to me.

Hmmm.. "This cigar smells like cat piss. I think I'll smoke it." How smart does that sound to you?

Again, no offense intended, but I would either return the box to the vendor or store it away for 6 months to a year and then see if it still reeks.

Haha, because i'm curious! The human being has done much more silly things in the name of finding out, "what happens".

LOL!

Well, better you than me, my friend.

I really hope you do a video review when you try this. I like to see a grown man cry. LOL
