Hey There,

Don't know how many of you all are following the news in Egypt.

A few minutes ago, Egypt state media presented an announcement that Mubarak is stepping down. Evidently, the military will take over. Not clear what will happen at all, but this is pretty amazing.

See Al Jazeera english for coverage.

Ciao,

Pete

For those Numerologists among you. Today is Feb 11, 2011

On....

Feb 11 , 1979. The Shah of Iran falls. (Technically he fled on Jan 16, 1979. The Feb date is when his "regime" fell.)

In Iran. February 11 is "Islamic Revolution's Victory Day".

Eerie. Let's just hope that Egypt doesn't turn out like Iran did.

Thanks for the post, Petrus. Actually, a couple of us were chatting about it the other day on the ShoutBox, when the crowds were in an uproar yesterday afternoon when he didn't resign then (when all of the pre-speech leaks said that he would).

Heard this on the 12 noon CBC reports on the radio today. Good news that it happened this way, and not a revolt or a coup.

Time will tell now what will happen over the coming days/weeks/months. A peaceful transition to a new, civilian government needs to take place. The Middle East is too unstable in recent years for Egypt to crumble any more....

Was just recently in the Middle East and the problem and struggles of Egypt were felt by the whole region. I don't want to say every things going to be perfect, but the area deserves some more democracy. Some of the kingdoms and regimes still running can do a fairly good job. Mubarak of Egypt was not one though. This is a sigh of a relief for many and crowds are cheering. A special day in history.

Great scenes of liberation - please let whatever comes next not be any worse!

I hope for the better.

By the people, for the people.

And Cuba ?

Lessons in this for everyone.

The people are NOT powerless, as many would lead us to believe.

If enough are determined and pissed-off enough, this can happen anywhere.

Of course, the army did not fire on the people. The demonstraters in Iran last year were not so lucky.
