El Presidente Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 There are many of you who are travelling to Havana for the festival of for vacation and many of you are unfamiliar with where to get a decent bite to eat....which is not easy. For those here who have been frequent travellers to Havana. What are your two favourite places for lunch and dinner? Name of place and address (even a suburb is fine). Mine are: "La Casa" (Calle 26 Nuevo Vedado). Great family with a fantastic baked rabbit main. Doctor Cafe (Miramar). Ideal place in the courtyard for a long lunch of skewered BBQ meat or seafood.
Wil Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Can't say I had too much great food in Cuba, but did go to Paladar La Guarida which was pretty good. Worth going just to see the building, although I had heard it closed down (?) http://www.havana-guide.com/paladarlaguarida.html
laficion Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 although I had heard it closed down (?) They have reopened not too long ago, great news, well done ,
CBL Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Might be a standard answer but El Aljibe's chicken blew my socks off! Also some small Paladar's had some great spreads, forgot about the names though
cigcars Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 *Maybe one day soon us lil 'ole regular American citizens will be free to take a trip there - and get our results back to you!
Kangaroo495 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Best stuff I had was in the casas. Lobster was a winner.

I've never had a chance to actually eat there, but I was given a taste of the roasted chicken with some leftovers taken from there, and it was absolutely top notch. For me, mine would be for another garden restaurant in new Havana (I think it might be in Miramar actually), but it's something I can't remember right now. I know I've mentioned the restaurant in the past, but it's on the tip of my tongue and I can't think of it right now. The only other one I can think of is El Rancho, in Varadero, for those that go there also. Sorry - wish my memory was working right now.

Unless I am mistaken you are thinking Jardines/La Cocina de Lilliam. One of Havana's best but their love of putting cheese on everything irks me. Jose's favourite restaurant! Ajibe Chicken is a must. It is the only thing on the menu which is edible. However also has one of the best wine cellars anywhere in the world. Ask to go to the cellar and have a look.
Bill Hayes Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Best stuff I had was in the casas. Lobster was a winner. I agree. Lobster, chicken or prawns - all same price at the Casa I stayed at in Havana. $8 US and you got a whopping big and tasty home-cooked dinner. I stayed at Cookies' Casa, a cracking old lady who sat in her rocking chair and drank rum. We gave her our duty-free bottle of Bombay Saphire gin and she sat in her chair and drank it straight from a coffee mug. I hope she's still with us. I'd love to go back to visit one day. I also think she was trying to set me up with her daughter Maria. She even set up a meeting for my mate with a stunning young female friend of the family. Love your work Cookie!

The sh!t they can do with pork, rice and black beans is mind boggling.
Mr. Japan Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I am with you President even if La Guarida was also a great place IMHO
