MoneyPit Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 So I saw this months ago, but recently stumbled back on it again. I wanted to get the general FOH opinion on this study. From the article: In the early nineteen twenties an issue of the Italian almanac, Il Tabacco, contained an interesting column under the heading Sigaromanzia - twelve positions of the hand holding the cigar with captions showing the psychological characteristics of the smoker. The Italian psychologists of the last century were, apparently, right. At our request, a number of modern experts conducted a similar experiment and came to approximately the same conclusion. So take a closer look at the people you talk to, and maybe you'll find out something about them you didn't know before. 1. A Fine Orator, A Good Psychologist 2. Sensible, Fair-Minded 3. Temperamental, Irritable, But a Man of His Word 4. Cheerful, Sociable, Self-Willed 5. Elegant, Imposing 6. Quiet, Decisive 7. Hard, Egoistic 8. Practical, Vengeful 9. A Loner, An Opportunist 10. Thrifty 11. Mistrustful, Skeptical 12. Generous, Democratic, Talkative, Welcoming
rallones Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 I don't buy it. In the course of smoking a cigar that lasts more than 50 minutes, which for me is anything larger than a tres petit corona/perla, I hold my cigar a variety of ways (depending on wht feels comfortable at the time). I suspect that anyone who observed me at various points during the smoke, could conclude that I had all of these personality traits and/or was schizophrenic.
dicko Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 I hold between puffs in position 4, and hold for puffs like position 3. I think those descriptors could apply to an extent
kafreeman Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 I hold between puffs in position 4, and hold for puffs like position 3. I think those descriptors could apply to an extent I do the same thing... a lot more like position 3 though. And well... yeah those do apply...
Stalebread Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Fact or crap? Given those two choices, I'd go with Crap. It smacks of phrenology and other pseudosciences, at best.

Much as it pisses me off, I'd be lying if I said it weren't so (j/k).
cigcars Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 ***Not a bad study. Some portions of appear to be a bit repetitive...The 1st Good Orator/Psychologist...The latter one Talkative, Democratic, Welcoming - the holding of the cigar in each is very similar too.
laficion Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 I'm more on the No.3 so don't get me angry Great thread
Ken Gargett Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 first, crap for sure. secondly, how many different ways do you hold a smoke throughout, especially depending on what stage you're at? finally, most likely number three. so maybe not quite so much crap.
El Presidente Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Apparently I am a good Orator and Psychologist. It is true I do a lot of marriage councelling on the deck
Ken Gargett Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 wondering whether you should go home occasionally is not marriage counselling.
jackohalloran Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 wondering whether you should go home occasionally is not marriage counselling. Maybe more suiting would be an Orator and Procrastinator

Interchange those positions and one of em will burn your lips!
MoneyPit Posted October 11, 2010 Author Posted October 11, 2010 I noticed that the picture for #9 was missing, so I added it. I usually go with positions 2 or 4, but I've been tempted a time or two to try #10 (thrifty). Glad everyone enjoyed this!
LeafLover Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I do both 7 and 5 interchangeably. I suppose miy personas are interchangeable as well. There I would be: Elegantly hard and an imposing egoist.
Jesuscookies Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Baaaah hooey! Like others I will use several different methods to hold my cigar throughout the course of a smoke. So, unless I go through all of those different charachteristics in one cigar or i'm scizophrenic i'm calling BS.

samb Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I guess Im both practical and vengeful, or just a former cigarette smoker....
Leopolis Semper Fidelis Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I'm left handed Ditto. Even though I'm right-handed, I'm left-handed when holding a cigar, because it's more comfortable that way. Anyhow, I light my cigar with the right hand, and hold my accompanying beverage there too. IMHO, the illustrations and interpretations are just a load of old bollocks.
scinmyheart Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I can see #10 being correct...or it's a fat joint
