Gents,

Guy (laficion) and myself decided to try an experiment. We both own a box each of the HDM Particulares EL 2001, my box

code (I will add later later) and Guy's Box code (I will also add this later.)

I am smoking the cigar from his box and vice versa.

We will be doing this review live as we are smoking it. So Let us being:

Aroma at cold: Elie:

Cedary, but probably due to the fact that it was in a coffin?

Wrapper:

Beautiful dark wrapper, with shine of oil.

First Third:

1 - Opening is sweet floral with a sweet wood finish.

2 - Floral is becoming sweeter - honey finish.

Half way through 1st 3rd:

1 - Biscuit/Chocolate mixed with honey wood

2 - Biscuit milky chocolate, with hint of sweet coffee.

The first third finishes beautifully, still getting the same profiles as mentioned above. Has the Hoyo Characteristics with a twist.

Second Third:

1 - Sweet Sweet chocolate ... milky! With hints of honey wood.

2 - Milky coffee finish with biscuity flavours.

post-5143-1277554485.jpg

half way through the 2nd third:

1 - I get something very interesting, Sweet candy - hmmm?

2 - Back to chocolate, the cigar is changing with every puff, reminds of the custom cigar we had with Rob, not in its profile but the way the flavours keep changing with every puff.

3 - Coffee with chocolate

Last third:

1 - Sweet chocolate with a salty vegetable finish also getting a bit of peper on the nose

2 - Light dark chocolate with the same vegetable finish.

3 - Roasted candy (if that even exist!) with the same vegetable finish.

93/100

Thoughts:

Guy and myself agree that the two cigars are distinctly different in flavours and profile.

Interactive duel tasting of the Hoyo de Montterrey

Particulares EL 2001. from laficion & Maalouy.

What an enjoyable experience today, smoking 2 same cigars but made in 2 different factories.

Elie & I were on line and smoked the 2 cigars at the same time, Elie in OZ and me in France.

A year ago , we sent each other the same cigar to test and see if the 2 cigars had the same taste profils

knowing that they were rolled in different factories and I must say that the differences were quite noticable indeed , here is my make on this vitola:

The cigar has been resting in my box humidor for almost a year. The wrapper was very dark and at some extent, quite oily.

The pre- unlite-smell was of very strong cedar wood but with some barnyard to it.

The frist third, the cigar kept it's woody earthy tones followed by after tastes of dark chocolate

and coffee.

Second third, The cigar keeps giving out a lot of chocolate tastes followed by rich expresso.

While talking to Elie on line, I told him that I was, from the start, drawing on my cigar quite a bit to keep it going whereas , on Elie's side, his cigar was giving out a lot of smoke and fewer draws.

Last thrid, Elie was still on the start of the 2nd third

when I had already reached the start of my third and what a last third it was, rich coffee intertwining with chocolate and hints of vanilla mixed with some crème brûlée giving a rich roasted finish.

From what Elie was describing on his cigar and

my results, it was clear that the 2 cigars had nothing

in commun aside from the name and the size.

For me this is proof that cigars of the same brand have different profiles depending in which factory they were made.

my note: 90/100

Hello Gentlemen,

Wonderful reviews and really an outstanding idea. I wonder how this would play out with other brands and sizes of cigars? Maybe this would be an idea for Rob and the boys for one of their video reviews?

I also appreciate the fact that you were both working together from such different parts of the world! It is great to see the world getting smaller and smaller.

Thank you,

Curtiss

Very innovative!

I reckon this is an idea that could be implemented to be done semi-regularly. With technology like skype... it sounds easy enough to do.

Seems like so many things are acheived by it - fun, brotherhood/fraternity, generosity, reviews of cigars, meeting of like minded people... the list keeps on going.

A little cold for you Elie?

Seriously Elie...a couple of days with ken and you have turned into him !!! You could both start a rap band

FANTASTIC REVIEW GENTLEMEN!!!!!

This cigar has been much maligned over the years (probably rightfully so) and it was enlightening to see another side. Well done!

I love the second and fourth photos, that fourth photo I think you have really captured the chair in focus in the background superbly. :photog:

Smithy, all your pics are sharp and in focus, but devoid of soul. This is the work of a true artiste... :photog:

I will hire a professional photographer next time, seeing that James and yourself seem to know what you are talking about :photog:
