I am avoiding the ikotex because I have mixed feelings about e-readers in general. I am an academic and find cross-referencing and true research difficult (actually impossible) on such devices. I see the usefulness for other media and might get off my high horse at some point. My initial impression is that this tablet is most useful whilst planted on a toilet bowl.

I do sorta like my iPhone. Most apps are for people with serious dopamine problems.

Read 'You are not a Gadget.' Very pertinent.

I can't guarantee "kicking the crap out of iPhone", but here are some alternatives that are just as good and sometimes better:

HTC Desire

Google Nexus One

Palm Pre

Nokia N810

I have tried the following phones as my work phone

HTC Desire

Nexus One (what a joke...)

Palm Pre

Droid

and the only one who even can match the iphone in usability is Pre, Android is still a joke, 10% of the applications, 2000 releases that the companies not upgrading to (so you are always stuck with an old version), the Market place is only available in the US... ... and more

Sorry, but right now none of the one you meansioned is even a close alternative to the iphone, Android might be it, but right now, NO. Witht the 4G i think there is not much to talk about...

I've got one and can't live without it now. It does all what I expect from a laptop and a bit more.

I feel that some of the arguments are outdated:

1- Multitasking: the next firmware or iOS has the ability to multitask.

2- lack of USB: transferring files can be done either through wifi as seen in applications like good reader. Or through iTunes using the usb to port cable through the file transfer sandbox specific to the app you are using. A good example of this file transfer method is seen in the iWorks productivity apps, good reader.. Etc

What is really missing is a great cigar app :P

Seriously, I recommend bento the database app for the masses. Building my cigar inventory database as we speak :snooty:

I am running the deverloper beta on my 3GS and multitasking it works, it perform but it dont kill the battery (as multitasking on my Android or Pre does)

Yes, but that would have made it bigger, and for the Android i have never used my usb cable to transfere files, but it would have been nice to have the option, but never if it makes the device bigger

Check out the Mobile Stogie, you have a lot of facts, but also multiple humidor databases, works great

We were talking about this on the deck this afternoon.

I know half a dozen people locally with an IPad. Three of them I never in a 100 years would have thought they would have purchased one. Each individual has purchased it for a different reason.

Kudos Apple. You know your market.

Ken wouldn't happen to be one of those individuals would he mate? :P

Also, I've asked the question as have a couple others I think on this thread.... How about your very own app for Czars Prez? :snooty:.

Sent from my iPad :P

Well we have enough members who could write an App

...but what would you want it to do?

Feel free to start another thread on the subject.

Re Ken, I think an Ipad would be perfect if it had (not sure) cutting edge voice recognition software.

Rob is referring to Arty, Shagga and myself.

Arty and myself are using ours for as a sort of mobile office.

Shagga on the other hand, well I'm not sure.

DM, I'll give you that, but then again, there are dozens of things the iPhone can't do that other smartphones can. It all comes down to the end user and what he/she will use it for.

I'm not saying the iPhone is crap, far from it. It is a very good product. What I am saying is that it is not the end all and be all of phones.

We're in complete agreement. What I was disputing was the statement made by someone else who said that in every case, there is another option that "kicks the crap" out of apple's products. A statement that, if I were the sort of person who uses such inflamatory rhetoric on this forum, I would say is asinine. But I won't say it.

You've got to be joking. If you can't find an app you need in the tens of thousand available for Android you're certainly not looking very hard.

The answer is "no". The iPad is a device for consuming, not creating data. For me that makes it worthless. I was looking forward to the Microsoft Courier, and was very sad that they canceled the project. That was a truly revolutionary tablet.

Even though I do make my living in IT, and have for 23 years, I can't stand reading books in digital format. I love paper. And claiming Apple "revolutionized" digital reading is complete crap. If anyone could claim that it has to be Amazon.

I will be getting my wife the new iPhone later this month. She loves the interface and she loves the kind of apps I have zero use for. I will be getting the HTC Incredible. I prefer the open OS idea, which is why I'm a die hard PC user. I have use for the Sense features that iOS doesn't offer.

I can tell you as an IT manager, I am seriously considering mandating the new Windows 7 phones for anyone at the office. All this crap aside, tight integration to Office, and especially Sharepoint, will be hard to counter no matter how many "iFart" and "iBoob" applications people can't live without.

I've had a couple of HTC phones (none were Android) and believed they freaking sucked!! Sluggish performance, non-responsive touchscreen, counter intuitive interface... Long story short, I'll stick to the iPhone for personal use and Blackberry for corporate use.

I've never tried a Blackberry, what are the features that you like about it.

Interesting to see everyone's thoughts. The iPad is going to ultimately revolutionalize how we control home electronics and will bring home integration together and make it available for the masses. That is the real kicker. Whether it is actually the iPad that allows this, or other products, it is the tablet that will become a means for integration. Read books, check email, surf the web, control your lights, heating, av, security, etc. It will be the unified home control and communication base. JMHO

I agree and see it heading the same way.

Whilst some technology already exists, I believe the iPad and possibly future versions will 'fine tune' the technology and bring it all together in a unified package that works in unison.

Now that you mention it, I'd love to see a universal remote app for the iPhone/ iPad app. ;)

Mika, you can find universal remote kits, and the whole shebang is available now, just not straight through a computer where people can just download apps... today you can do it through 3rd party systems that use the iPad as the interface. Pretty cool...

Thanks for the heads up bud, I'll look into it for sure! ;)

what does your iphone do that other phones can't?

I know for me, the speed, display, camera, and interface of my htc incredible is way above what the iphone can provide, and its not even close.

and for apps: Surely there may be some apps that droid/apple don't share. Both have their highlights. But all things equal, android is more capable of creating/running next-gen type apps. the programming language apple makes you use is ridiculous and pretty much sucks compared to other options.

I have one. Reading FOH right now on it. Did I need it? No, but I wanted it since I've been curious about e-readers for a while. I've never purchased a first-generation Apple product -- almost always waited a gen or two and purchased refurbished and/or on sale from Apple. Something about the iPad spoke to my interests and I love it. Whether or not you think there is no need for a product like the iPad, since I bought it I have been using my home laptop significantly less.

It's a good thing there are many, many computing and electronics choices out there and that some grumpy IT manager in the sky isn't forcing us to use the same products, OSes, software, etc. That would be a miserable life.

I believe Apple and Android apps are the future, I'm not impressed with Windows based programs or applications. I had a HTC touch for 2 years and that left me scarred. Never again.

btw, how do you guys like apple's spyware, i mean software, itunes :cigar:

What spyware.....? :D

I've 'Jailbroken' mine so I often download apps from a third party source that have every app found in iTunes along with independent developers applications to which I often donate funds to via pay pal to support these good folk.

Occasionally I download via iTunes also.

I think long before iTunes, majority of our personal details have been collected via several sources, just wait for my 'Facebook' thread! :D Seriously, I believe Facebook is the ultimate in spyware my friend because they don't just collect your details but also those of your friends, families etc.

The iPad just got more useful: now you can take it in the bath

Aquapac, maker of waterproof cases for a number of electronic devices, has just announced its iPad case is available in Australia.

post-5203-1276488739.jpg

The Large Wanganui case is made of clear polyurethane that makes it easy to see the screen, and also allows full touch-control. The 100% waterproof case is submersible to 10m, and although not designed specifically for the iPad, fits it remarkably well. Experience actually using the iPad underwater may vary, as this video on YouTube shows running water operating the touchscreen.

So now you can read iBooks in the bath, or use Maps to find your way whilst walking on a rainy day. The bag also promises to float if you accidentally drop your iPad in the water, which could be great if you wanted to take it out on a boat – I wonder if there’s a fish finder app for iPad? It’s also dust and sand proof, potentially making it a good all-rounder for beach-goers.

The case is available from Next Destination for $55. Or you could try your luck with a big Glad bag, though I make no guarantee that this will be a successful approach to keeping your precious iPad safe.

Oz This is a good idea not just for the Bath :D

Simply it will stop it getting wet

Cheers Oz :cigar:
