Come on Ken, Kewell will win the world cup single handedly, he's Australias secret weapon! :2thumbs:

you were close. he gave us the best possible chance by getting himself sent off. has any sportsman ever been so over-hyped and consistently (when he is not blaming refs, which he did for most of his brief cameo, or claiming endless injuries - he'd trip on a feather and need four weeks out) failed to deliver?

Good lord. End of first half of Italy vs. NZ. NZ has played a very nervy first half just to be nullified by a dive.

Well done by the Socceroos yesterday, a well deserved point.

New Zealand !!!! unbelievable result !!!!!! poor Italians, at least most of them can still join the diving team :2thumbs:

Amazing game to watch for the neutral...

Yep,well done NZ,could have snatched the win at the end!

This world cup has shown me two things, there are no more easy games(bit of a cliche),and that the European styles and tactics aren't competeing very well with the South American style, whose teams lookk to be head and shoulders above the rest at the mo.

Amen...

And luckily, all Latin American teams (giving deserved credits to Mexico and ex. Honduras) have been playing an attractive and forward game. Especially, Mexico, Paraguay and Chile... Aside from Argentina of course.

never ever envisaged being delighted by new zealand in any form of world cup (other than by their early exit) but good on them and i hope they make the next round. they've shown us that actually playing soccer can work and that you don't have to ponce about as overpaid prima donnas whinging about ever single little decision that might not suit you (and that goes for our commentators as well). we had four years of the soccer fraternity bitching about how we were robbed by italy last time (when they had a bloke sent off that was a far more ridiculous decision than either of ours and unlike nz, we never ever looked like scoring.

good on them.

Congrats to NZ on tie with Italy! Huge step forward for NZ and well deserved. Italy applied pressure throughout second half, but NZ did not buckle. I'm anxiously awaiting for Greece vs. Argentina game. Let's Go Greece!

Great game by NZ!!!!!

Just remember this all u Azzurri haters!!!!

In 82 they tied all 3 group games and went on to hoist the cup(Paulo Rossi)...i dont think they have the firepower up front to win it...but just an FYI...

Congrats NZ, they played really well.

It's a pity Kewell was sent off, I thought the Oz's played really good although down 10 men. It would have been much different if they had 11.

Starting to get tired of the cheating/diving in the games. FIFA has to do something about the problem, one match ban would be a good start. Totally wrecking and chancing the outcome of some of the games because the poor ref does't know what is a foul or a dive in most cases.

The Kaka sending off was a joke, the Ivory coast player should be ashamed.

the refs in some of these game have been downright amateur at best. I can't for the life of me, understand why some sort of instant replay isn't implemented for the improvement of the game?

Sitting back watching Portugal vs Korea DPR.

Ronaldo already making several shots for goal, very impressive.

Koreans defense also very good thus far however I wonder if they can keep up the stamina?

Smoking a Bolivar Pt Corona and enjoying the Portuguese scoring feast - 4-0 by now and almost the fifth scored with 25 minutes to go.

Absolutely right, and the Azzurri always seems to start slow each cup. They really miss Pirlo in these 2 games, when he returns I believe the offense will get much stronger. I just worry about Lippi and his old thinking, I wish he would mix it up a bit. I couldn't believe he took Pepe out yesterday, he and Zambrotta were the only two really running. I'm hoping for a win in the 3rd game.

Well done by New Zealand, that was a huge moment for their soccer fans. Best of luck

OMG it's 6-0 for Portugal against N. Korea.

I wonder whether the Koreans will return to their country after this. If I was the coach I'd stay in Africa!

The Porugese really are masterful at this game, great foot work, fantastic match to Portugal. The biggest defeat of any international game for DPR Korea.

Coming up, Chile vs Switzerland.

I predict Chile defeats the Suisse 2-1.... Well at least I hope for my wifes sake. B)

They played well against Honduras last match.

I watched a couple matches in Chile back in January whilst in La Serena. La Serena vs Coquimbo (Elqui province) both teams massive neighboring rivals, a lot of pride on the line. B)

Good luck Chile!! ;)

Chile beat 10-man Switzerland

Chile continued their dream World Cup run with a 1-0 defeat of 10-man Switzerland on Monday to move within touching distance of the last 16.

The South Americans climbed to the top of Group H after second-half substitute Mark Gonzalez finally broke down a steely Swiss defence in the 75th minute.

Chile, who had beaten Honduras 1-0 last week, will be assured qualification if Monday's late game between Spain and Honduras ends in a draw.

Switzerland, stunning 1-0 winners over favourites Spain in their first match, were up against it after going a man down on 30 minutes when Valon Behrami was sent off.

The West Ham midfielder was given his marching orders by Saudi Arabian referee Khalil Al Ghamdi for a tangle with Arturo Vidal after he appeared to elbow the Bayer Leverkusen player in the face.

Chile, who had impressed with their attacking passion in their opening 1-0 win over Honduras, had the first shot on target when Italy-based Carlos Carmona fired in from 20m, the ball safely scooped up by Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio.

Carmona then ensured he would miss Chile's closing Group H match with Spain on Friday by picking up a yellow card for a challenge on Behrami in the 21st minute to add to the one he received last week.

Four minutes before the interval Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld made a tactical switch, pulling off striker Alexander Frei and replacing the team captain with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta.

After the break Chile's Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa replaced midfielder Vidal with Gonzalez, the CSKA Moscow striker.

Alexis Sanchez thought he had scored in the 49th minute, celebrating ecstatically only to then see out of the corner of his eye the linesman's flag raised for offside.

The Swiss were having to defend with a capital D against a country that had only come in one point behind Brazil in qualifying.

It was all Chile now as the ball rarely left the Swiss side of the Nelson Mandela Bay pitch.

On 55 minutes the Europeans were let off when Gonzalez jumped over the white wall only to head a corner high.

Trigger happy Al Ghamdi then dished out three yellow cards in the space of one minute to Swiss defender Reto Ziegler and Chilean duo Gary Medel and Matias Fernandez to take the tally to eight with one red and still 20 minutes on the clock.

Chile finally made the breakthrough they had been threatening for so long when Esteban Paredes, who had only entered the fray 10 minutes earlier as a replacement for Matias Fernandez, raced around Benaglio and found Gonzalez who headed into an empty goal.

Switzerland almost grabbed an unlikely last minute equaliser when substitute Eren Derdiyok shot just wide of Bravo's left post.

Small consolation but the Swiss set a new World Cup record of 559 minutes played without scoring a goal, to overtake Italy's mark of 550 minutes.

In summary, French Sports Minister, Roselyne Bachelot:

"I told the players they had tarnished the image of France," she commented.

"It is a morale disaster for French football. I told them they could no longer be heroes for our children. They have destroyed the dreams of their countrymen, their friends and supporters."

wow. Will be interesting to see the fallout from this after they surely fail to make it out of their group and go home. Bizarre situation.
