asmith Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 On a cold Wednesday evening Rob and I enjoyed a cigar with some of our Sydney clients. It was a great venue at Cohibar, Darling Harbour with the CBD as a backdrop fine wines and cigar were served. Great stories told along with heaps of laughs and discussion of great cigars. Here are a couple of happy snaps of the evening.

jay8354 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Hi Sydneysiders, Going to be off-topic here but on the night that Rob and Smithy came down. Rob made a comment that while I do not like to admit but have to agree with. "Why is it that Sydney FOH members find so hard to have a get together?" Rob went on to state that Brisbane or Melbourne there would be at least 30+ ppl at these gatherings consistently month in month out. We had less than 10 that night, granted that it was middle of a work week. This was discussed in detail on busy life schedule, commitments and geography but are we that much different to the other cities. Is it also because we have a lack of presence in this city? What would made you come out everytime? Comments and insights appreciated.
Fuzz Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 It was an interesting discussion topic. I don't think there is one all encompassing answer to the question as to why Sydney get togethers turn out poorly. Yes, we are spread out across the greater Sydney region, and it does take a lot of time to get from the city to the outskirts (I'm 40km out of the CBD and it takes over an hour on a good day). Not to mention that the CBD is a real b*tch to get around, what with all the one way streets. Then there's the limited number of cigar friendly spots. Most places wouldn't even consider booking out the entire place for a herf. If Clover Moore gets her way, there'll be no smoking anywhere in the CBD. And it's not like we have a close knit cigar community like Brisbane or Melbourne. We're more like a few disparate groups that hang out with our own kind. I'll freely admit that I tend to smoke only with my mate Jay and have only gone to 4 get togethers (only the first had a decent turnout). Personally, I would love to have a better organised cigar community in Sydney, but I just don't see it coming any time soon.
Ben Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Yeah being mid week was the killer for me unfortunately. With my work commitments and geography as Jay mentioned It was simply impossible for me to get there, much as I would have liked to.
Bartolomeo Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 What was the drink with the cucumber in it? Thanks Bart
Fuzz Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 What was the drink with the cucumber in it?Thanks Bart™ A Marc Feldini?

Good question though mate, I've tried to get mates to do a regular thing at Cohibar each month but it just fizzles out. Unfortunately Cohibar is one of the only venues that we know is 100% cigar friendly. It is central enough so that people can get there but maybe people's busy lives get in the way of a getting together? I've always thought that many cigar lovers (in Sydney at least) are very apathetic about getting together? Perhaps Sydney's problem is that we are a big city and Brisbane and Melbourne are just little towns where getting together is much easier? I've even noticed a slight drop in cigar lovers heading out to events you have to pay for....
maalouly Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I don't agree that Sydneysiders are not intersted in a get together. Chris (Fuzz) you might pretend that you don't like catching up in the city but reality is everytime we had one you were there. I have never missed a gathering and I have plenty of friends that will jump at the idea of a cigar night. The issue that we face here though, at times you meet friendly audience and sometimes you meet people who aren't willing to integrate with others. I personaly go to these nights to relax, and everytime I have been to one organised by Rob, I had the chance to meet some amazing people such as Sam Spurs (who by the way never shows up anymore! apparently he is building a castle.) Chris (Fuzz), new member Steven and his business partner Marcel, and honestly that's what cigar gathering is all about, cigars, drinks and laughter. I do not see the value of paying $150 for a cigar night, when I am going to be told rubbish that I already know and given NC or Brazilian cigars. I prefer to organise a free night where we all bring 3 or 4 cigars and we can exchange some with other memebrs on the night. I have said on numerous times, let's organise a montly Sydney gathering, Sam pretends he's intersted and disapears after his first comment. Now I know some people on this forum that will be happy to be part of a monthly gathering, I will be organising it as of next month, Sam no more excuses mate.
