ChanceSchmerr Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 ...Why the hell did I start smoking cigars with THAT? My first ever cigar was a Canadian "Tuero" cigar that I picked up duty free when I was on an East Coast navy ship out of Halifax. When i think now how God-awful that cigar was.....I have to wonder, what the hell I was thinking, starting out on this great cigar journey with such a disgrace to rolled tobacco? Some may like them.....takes all kinds, I guess. I just wish my first cigar memory was of something a little more.....non-garbage-y? Anyone else out there regret not finding a better cigar to be their very first one?
samb Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My first was a Macanudo. I dont regret it, because I LOVED it, and it made me want to try different and more cigars. I dont care for the Macanudos anymore, or any NC really (I have no interest), but if it wasnt for them, I may not have the appreciation for cigars that I do now.
stargazer14 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 oh yea. I started smoking little clubs. i really enjoyed them, and just recently bought a pak of a few kinds i smoked. I dont think i finished 3 cigars from each brand before tossing the whole pak. Even the Davidoff minis are almost unsmokable to me. Still enjoy a Villiger now and then. More 'then'.
MIKA27 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My very first cigar wasn't all too bad (Unlike Chances ) mine was a Padron # 35 and I had that when I went hunting in Gippslands high country with my father. To this day I still have a few in my humidor, not all that bad and is the only NC I smoke and even that is out of tradition. I have been gifted a cigar before by my brother in law when my son was born (Who isn't into cigars) and THAT was a terrible experience because he expected me to smoke it whilst he was there. It was a Henri Wintermans Corona DeLuxe and it tasted rank. Later that day however, I did have a nice Siglo VI to forget all about the earlier experience.
thechenman Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Let's see now...my first cigar...well, my first cigar was a Phillies Blunt, but it had some other stuff in there along with the short filler tobacco. Didn't regret that then, still don't regret it now. My first long filler was a Macanudo...like Samb I don't regret it. While I don't smok Macanudos anymore, they got me interested enough in the cigars themselves which led me to Habanos.
gfoster Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My first was a montecristo #4 in canada. Do I regret it? Heck no! My wife bought me a full box heh. -- Gary F.
Buch0 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My first cigar was an RyJ#2 Tubos which are plentiful here in Sydney. Most every bottleshop has a cabinet near the entry/exit with the RyJ tubos and the occasion Monte #5 in them, which in turn makes many a people who are having a good day purchase a cigar with their alcohol. Most people see the cigars and straight away ask the attendant if they are "cubans", which I indeed did back when I was 18. Funly enough my first encounter with these wasn't a good one, as I remember inhaling the most amount of smoke possible just to make the exhale look exceptional around everyone . The head spins and foul ash taste that followed that should of dented my perception of cigars but it infact did the opposite, I wondered what all the fuss was about and started reading up on them which has lead me to my love of them today. I actually think I still have the original tubos stored away somewhere to this day..
Habanos2000 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My first was a Davidoff Grand Cru #2, a gift from my former boss on the occasion of his first grandchild back in 96. I don't remember much about it, except that it was such a high prestige cigar over here, people thought I new a lot about cigars. Oh how wrong they were! I've been through the whole gambit of DC's and then finally found nirvana with my first CC, a Hoyo DC in 98, and never looked back.
Colt45 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 it is better to regret something you did, than something you didn't do. can one truly know joy without experiencing sorrow? a bird in the hand......
Tampa1257 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 My first cigar was a Montecristo No.2 and the "Lights" were turned on!
cadillacdoc Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Robert Burns Black Watch 37 years ago. UGGHHHHHH!
bunburyist Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 first proper cigar was a Davidoff 2000 I think. A few god awful machine made jobs from Holland otherwise. The kind that make you feel like the Terminator has spent the night flamethrowering your throat.
riderpride Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 My first was a Siglo III that a friend brought back for me from Varadero; my only regret was not asking her to buy a box instead of a 5-pack.
MrGlass Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 First cigar was a Jewels Vanilla - some god awful thing with a flavoured tip. I loved them back in the day Still today, my brother prefers them over any Cuban I've given him.
LeafLover Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Very first thing I ever smoked was Marlboro Red cigarettes at age 14. Continued with those and started smoking the leaves that you buy in small baggies . That lasted a couple years. Then first cigar was an NC Cohibas in my 20's. Burned through almost all NC's: the good, the bad, and the hyped-up. My first habano, so cliche, was a Monte 2. That's all she wrote. Monte 2 is an oldie but goodie, but so much more CC's I favor over those now.
sfordham Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 My first was a montecristo #4 in canada. Do I regret it? Heck no! My wife bought me a full box heh.-- Gary F. Me too - minus the wife buying me a box.
rckymtn22 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 The Guantanamera Cristales that i bought on my first trip to Cuba, before I knew better. I still have them aging in my coolidor.
JoshMP Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 First cigar I ever smoked was a tatiana flavoured tubos. And I only got it because I thought it was amusing the guy in the cigar shop thought I was over 18 (I was 15 at the time). Never really smoked anything else until I turned 18, since then I've been fortunate enough to smoke a bit of everything. First cigar i smoked which made me go "wow, this is IT" was a H. Upmann Magnum 50. They still remain my go to cigar if i'm not sure what I want.
Kangaroo495 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I smoked some kind of Winterman's which had a plastic filter tip when I was 17. Was at a house party with all my mates, and everyone thought the cigar idea was really cool! So no. I don't regret it. I only regret the fact that mum smelled smoke on my clothes when she was washing them the next day. I explained that we had a bonfire at the party. None the less, my life was not worth living for a few weeks after mum was through with me. Also smoked a massive jaw breaking port wine flavoured cigar when I graduated from school. A few of my mates smoked some too. Never seen so much vomit in one place in my life.
88keys Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Mine was a Bering Plaza. That's right, Bering Plaza. Recommended by the guy in the cigar store! Next my girlfriend bought me some unbelievable crap from Brazil. Recommended by another guy in a cigar store! Then a wealthy older friend saved me -- Montecristo #2!
