Kangaroo495 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I smoked an RyJ Belicoso over the weekend, and loved it. Now that RyJ has moved up a notch in my opinion of the brand, I got think about Hoyo. I've never smoked a Hoyo that I enjoyed (i.e. above an 80/100)... In fact, I hated them all! I've tried quite a few - Epis, Hoyo de..., DCs, etc. But Hoyo de Monterrey has become more like The Hole of Monterrey for me. I'm wondering - what am I doing wrong? I've smoked young and aged, light and dark... I can safely say, that Hoyo is my LEAST favourite brand of all Habanos (except the ones I've never tried - JLP, Cabanas, Los Statos, Fonseca, Flor de Cano and Troya). I even enjoy a Sancho Panza or a Quintero much more than Hoyo! So what's going on with HDM? Any ideas?
MIKA27 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I kinda agree Kanga. Of late, I must say, I'm not as impressed with HDM's but I do enjoy the DC's. The Epicure Especiales are not much to write home about, I think they are over rated as they taste way too young for me. I've aged mine (Not too long) around 11 months now and purchased them as singles around January last year and they still have that Amonia taste toward the last third.
Guest rob Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I have nothing against HdM... but I do find that other marques satisfy me a hell of a lot more. If I have $ to spend it will usally go into something like Partagas, Ramon Allones, Bolivar etc... Bang for buck if you will. In fact, havbing thought about it - I think I only have one box of HdM in my entire collection.... and that is not one of their regular lines but was the 07 EL.
shrink Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I'm not a big fan of the Hoyos either, but there are several that I wouldn't be without... Aged Hoyo des Dieux Aged Epicure No. 1 The 2007 Regalos EL
dicko Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I've only tried about a handful of singles of the epi range but I quiet enjoyed them as a light to medium bodied smoke, usually with a cuppa in the afternoon. Really enjoyed the 07 LE although I think that has a different flavour profile to the rest I have tried.
Stalebread Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I doubt seriously if your doing anything wrong. It's your taste. It's bound to be different from the taste of others'. For me, I'm a fan of the Hoyo des Dieux from '01. And I really enjoyed the 2003 LE Piramide.
Stalebread Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I should add that, for me, Hoyos are a mild smoke. I have to prepare myself that this is going to be a mild (but flavorful) cigar and that I'll need to pay attention to it.

Stale, you describe it as mild and flavourful. Although I love a mild cigar, I've never found HDM to be in any way "flavourful". It always tastes like hot bitter tobacco to me. What flavours should I be looking for do you think?

What years should I pay particular attention to? Stalebread says '01. Had a Hoyo du Roi the other week from '02 - it was disgraceful!
Colt45 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 As the guys have said, if they're not your cup of tea, there's nothing wrong with that. I've been smoking from a great '06 box of epicure no.1, and have just started in on an '07 box of churchills, which early on are quite enticing. Have enjoyed the DC as well.

anacostiakat Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 In the end, I'd have to agree... Though I hate the feeling that I'm missing out on something! I have not cared (or bought) for the main line in many years. I do like the Le Hoyo line. Especially if aged. I love the Des Dieux. Althought I have been hearing good things about the Epi #1 lately from some guy in france. To each their own. That is why them make vanilla and chocolate ice cream.
ChanceSchmerr Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Kangaroo, it's natural not to like them all! I havn't found a Romeo y Julieta outside of the discontinued Prince of Wales that I can actually enjoy - to me they have all been garbage! Maybe it's the lack of ligero? According to Suckling, the HDM DC contains no Ligero at all, despite its large size. Not sure if that goes for the rest of the marque, but interesting nonetheless.

That is why them make vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Kanga, All I can say is that , for me, the HDM Epicure No. 1 is my go to cigars since many years now. I've never aged any of these cigars because I smoke them up so fast. I'm convinced that there's nothing wrong with your tastes , it's just that they don't do it for you and that's it, just not your cup of tea. I myself have quit a few that just don't go well with me, such as the Cohiba Robusto, A good many of the Montecristo's, the partagas D4 and some others, so ?, Do I look worried ? Smoke what YOU like, not what others say you should like Oufff, that was long, I think I'll go light up a Epicure No. 1 now, Ciao brother
khomeinist Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I am not terribly fond of this marca either. I get a fair bit of cream and cocoa in an hoyo. Generally when I am in the mood for these 'softer' flavors, I reach for a Trinidad, which gives me layers of spice and coffee as well. I have had nice Hoyo experiences (Regalos, occasional DC, Churchill, or Epicure) but I usually end up trading Hoyos to my friends for their Partagas, Bolivar, etc.
stargazer14 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Atho there is not much left in my Fridge-i-dor, I did enjoy some older petite robustos and i am liking my box of Epi Especials, tho i agree the finish (or last 3rd) is still lacking. My Epi #2 are slow mover.
Danashan Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Smoke what YOU like, not what others say you should like What Guy said! Don't waste your energy on things you don't like. You may revisit them in a year from now. In my experience, the taste changes with time.
BigGuns Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Amen to the smoke what works, however, here is my take on HdM: Love the DC's - I haven't had a bad one yet Epi No. 1s are good, however inconsistent Petite Robustos are good, but need time to rest in order to get there
BolivarSmoker Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I agree with the others, smoke what YOU like. Who cares what others say. I personally am a huge fan of the Hoyo DC. The Epi 2 is my weekend morning smoke with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Nice morning cigar, IMHO.
