has been some talk that this photo was shopped (interestingly, if it was published locally i didn't see it - and if that doesn't remind you of sherrif brody on the beach with the locals telling to keep stum as it would be bad for business - a mate sent it from a UK paper) but it seems that there is no doubt that a massive great white had a large chunk taken out of him by a much more massive one.

we do have shark nets and there are very rarely fatalities on those beaches but i believe that around 40% of the sharks caught in the nets actually entered from the beach size. and they do the drum lines hanging down hooks - one such line was recently destroyed, i believe, by the shark alleged to have done this. and those lines do catch quite a few dolphins, which may not be as clever as we think. one dolphin that the guys manning the lines recognise, they call martin or something like that. last time i heard, he had been caught (they release most of the dolphins relatively unharmed, something like 36 times. you really think it'd learn.

Are there Orca whales in your parts?

we don't, or very rarely, see orcas this far north though they are certainly down south. famous tale of a small town near the vic/nsw back in the whaling days where the orcas - we call them killer whales - would alert the townspeople that whales were in the vicinity. the local hunters would head out, catch a whale and return and throw the killers the tongue and a few other delicacies. apparently worked very well for a long time till some interloper killed an orca and they never again alerted the locals.

sorry smithy, i think one of the whalers used to smoke an occasional cigar - does that qualify?

Ken, you're on fire today. What a pisser!

Come on Smithy, say something mate! At the moment it's 3-0 in Ken's favour!

Definitely looks shopped. Assuming the "bite" is all the way through as it appears, there wouldn't be enough connective tissue to support the weight of the head.

As for dolphins...I love them...they're delicious.

I have a great dipping sauce for them.

I love the outdoors but for some reason sharks scare the living daylight out of me. Perhaps it's because JAWS was imprinted into my mind at such an early age.

looks totally 'shopped' to me IMHO....but as they say, never let facts get in the way of a good story.....

I agree the more I look at it.

I've been reading your posts from time to time. You said you write professionally? Do you know that capital letters are at the beginning of each sentence and it is spelled recognize?

Of course, you do realize that "recognize" is the American spelling and "recognise" is the British spelling? Let me guess, you correct people that use the word "colour" as well? Or do you just like to make yourself look awkwardly silly?

i think you should take a moment to recognise the individual to whom you are addressing, Jan 7, 2010. take some time to get to know your way around here. beware of the pants. and the crack.

May I suggest some light reading for your lack of knowledge..."How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie!

I was poking fun. I know they accept both. Theatre, centre, realise, flavour, even connexion is spelled differently. You can't insult a man on here.

Let me give you a bit of advice I learned recently the hard way, if I might be so bold.

Humor doesn't translate well. Good natured ribbing doesn't always come across that way and can easily make you look like an ass when it's actually the furthest thing from your mind. Taking the piss out of people is a very touchy and complicated dance around here and there are only a few ways to do it well and MANY ways to **** it up and make yourself look like a ****** even when you didn't intend to. I speak from personal experience.

If you intended your remark as poking fun, I can assure you it didn't come across that way. You're best off waiting a good long time before you try to jump in that pool. The good thing is, people around here don't appear to hold grudges and a "mea culpa" is generally accepted at face value. That's one of the (many) strengths of this place, IMO and this is one of the few places where when you say you're sorry and someone else accepts that, it truly is forgotten (unlike my wife who it's "forgotten" only until it's time to dredge it up and beat you over the head with it when she's losing some other argument, but then I digress...)

Now, start off by insulting Ken's pants. That's always safe. After that, work slowly up to insulting his housekeeping skills and Smithy's manliness. After that, you're in uncharted territory :ok:

fully aware of punctuation and use it when appropriate. can do posts just a bit quicker so don't bother. has my lack of caps ever led to confusion? if i think that there is the slightest possibility, i make sure to use caps. to be honest, if it bugs anyone, i don't really care.

on the other hand, if something is for publication, i become quite pedantic.

re the spelling, in general on this site it is pretty average and a bloke could waste a lot of time if they felt the need to correct every error. that said, the shorter oxford (remembering that the language is 'English', not 'American') recognizes (if it makes you happy) both. and on the subject of being pedantic, i'm assuming you meant 'spelt' rather than 'spelled', though the latter may be perfectly from wherever you hail. not really something that bothers me either way.

and i have not the least intention in getting into debates on this forum re the english language if i can possibly avoid it. more than enough to argue about here without that. so please don't think me rude if i don't respond to any other posts on this.

Personally, I think spelinng and punksheeashun are the absolute least of KG's worries. And Gary, it may not mean crap to you, but you participate,

you contribute, you are a member. But - I think I may refer to you as Everton for a while....... (insert smiley here).

no grudges at all and if intended as humour, no problems.

i'll confess i didn't recogni#e it as such.

and yet another thread heads off in completely unintended directions.

You are correct, sir... I don't know what that means and now I'm not sure whether to say "thank you" or wave my fingers vaguely in your direction and shout profanities :P
