Most people seem to have a 'second' team somewhere they root for without really being a fully-fledged fan. For reasons not entirely clear, a couple years back I took an interest in US College Football. The whole system of college sports in the US appeals to me (unpaid atheletes, the draft, etc), and if I lived there I think I'd be more likely to go watch a NCAA game than an NFL one. And this is despite the crazy system of not have a knockout comp / playoffs to decide the champions - never understood that.

Partly based on the film Forrest Gump, and partly because I've always had a yearning to go to the South for a massive bbq, I decided to go with Alabama. I was always going to go for one of the more 'storied' teams as you call it, and to be honest there's only one team in the SE. Even though some have predicted them a flop this year, I still think they'll make a bowl and be challenging for the national title next season, especially if they can hold on to Jones. 3yrs of Saban recruiting will pay off sooner or later.

So I suppose there should be a point to this thread, other than me talking up 'Bama, so I predict Texas to upset Florida in the title game.

Thoughts?

Roll tide :)

Come on, the Buckeyes and Florida are just flash-in-the-pans - they'll be like Miami in 5 yrs time :)

Enjoyed watching Dixon at Oregon before he got injured, fallen away a bit since then. Just got turned over by Boise State as well - worth putting money on them going undefeated this year, methinks.

I haven't undertaken any studies in the US, so choosing Alabama was partly arbitrary, and partly because I want an excuse to tour that part of the world one day. It was either 'Bama or Nebraska.....but I don't like corn enough.

If I ever make it over to do a MSc or some such, I like the look of Cal.

Alabama is a horrible choice. I am a Tennessee fan that is obesessed with College Football. Some great games this weekend!

Be serious. From what I can see, everything that's good about the US comes from Alabama.

I look forward to visiting one day and having some bbq and fried chicken, whilst listening to some Hank Williams.

'Bama to do a job on VT tomorrow by 15 pts. At least. Then it's easy riding until LSU, finishing with a monster beat down of Auburn to round it off.

there are other states that have at least as good BBQ/Fried Chicken/Hank. I agree that Bama is going to do a job on VT though.

With any luck I'll get to test that statement one day. Although to be fair, I went to a 'Bubba Gump' restaurant here in HK....deep fried shrimp with an extra bowl of 'dipping oil'...oh god no!!!!

Right, I'm off out for a cold one - happy smoking :)

Go Bruins!!!

If it weren't for my daughter's b-day, I'd be watching your boys get their rear-ends handed to them in the grudge match in Neyland next weekend. I'll be watching intently at home with a great cigar though.

Not a fan, but I will say this: don't kid yourself about the purity of college sports - they are big business (especially football),

and fraught with skullduggery.

No question about that.

Bunburyist...

I would have to agree with Colt and Rogers...NCAA college football is far from clean as there is a lot of money to be made...not only for the kids that go pro, but for the media, the NCAA, and the schools. NCAA basketball is not far behind. For many colleges and universities in the states, one of these two sports, if not both, are the schools biggest revenue generators.

That said...I am still a big fan of college football. I prefer the NFL for the sheer level of skill/talent the professionals have. That and the fact that there is more parity among the teams in the NFL than NCAA Division I football teams.

Being a Southern Californian, I would have to go with USC. Go Trojans! However, IMHO, the most storied college football team in the U.S. has got to be, hands down, Notre Dame.
