JMH Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I was recently thinking about how little aussie beer I've been drinking lately, and about how few aussie beers I actually know. I thought that I'd start this thread to try & rectify that with your help. Some of the better ones I've drunk (and remembered) are *Coopers pale & sparkling ales - used to be a staple in the fridge but I haven't bought any in quite a while *Matilda Bay bohemian pilsner - a nice pilsner, but like all the beers from matilda bay, pretty expensive *Assorted beers from the Lord Nelson pub - mostly of a fairly english style *Little Creatures pale ale - not bad, and like coopers, fairly reasonably priced I'm sure there are a number of others I like, I just can't quite coax the brain into remembering them just at the moment. I've heard about a few other pubs in sydney that brew their own beer & hopefully I'll be checking them out in the near future. So finally to the point of the thread, what aussie beers can you guys recommend? Note to queenslanders: XXXX does not count as beer.

Note to queenslanders: XXXX does not count as beer. first, a cold xxxx on a hot day is a good beer. secondly, priceless - being bagged for beer from the state that gave use such gems as reschs and tooheys and more. i find that the kiwis - and i hate saying it - do the small brewery thing far better than we do. coopers, hardly a small brewery is one of my fave aussies. if you want to try one that makes some really interesting beers - moorilla estate winery has moo beer - 4 diffferent ones from memory. teriffic beer. it is also a must visit if in tassie as they will soon open one of the great art and antiquities galleries/museums in the southern hemisphere. i think he made his money from some systems he developed to beat the casinos.
JMH Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 Ken, I'll be the first to admit that tooheys couldn't make a decent beer to save their lives, but that does not in any way diminish the atrociousness of XXXX. I'll keep an eye out for moo beer. Do you have any names of kiwi beers to keep an eye out for?

Fuzz Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Unless you're interested in an awful lemon zesty beer, steer well clear of the Monteiths Radler!
Ken Gargett Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Unless you're interested in an awful lemon zesty beer, steer well clear of the Monteiths Radler! hence, the 'some of'. they are very hit and miss for me.
Guest rob Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I always thought Foster's was "Australian for Beer". If it was any good we wouldn't export it.
maalouly Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 If it was any good we wouldn't export it. Haha that's what I tell everyone I meet overseas! If it was good we would have kept it in the country!
JMH Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 I always thought Foster's was "Australian for Beer". haha I've seen more fosters overseas than I've seen here. I can probably count the number of times I've seen fosters in Australia on one hand.

TDCOOK Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 My dearest Ken... Americans don't drink Fosters... It comes in 20 ratings behind Coors Lite... In Fact There is no such thing as an Australian Beer... It's simply the collected various juices from the outback compressed into oversize marketed cans. For gods sakes .. if you can drink $2000 bottle of wine.. why can't your pallet adjust to a respectable beer.. I worry about you Ken>>>>> Ok Rob That should give you enough entertainment for a week... Kenny Boy..We Love YA!!!!!!

Kenny Boy..We Love YA!!!!!! if you check the posts, you'll see that i never mentioned fosters other than to confirm that it is extremely rare to see it in australia. i would not have tried it for several decades and then, probably when i was OS. i wll say that the one country that would be in a giant glass house when it comes to criticising the beer of other nations would be the states. i believe that there are now some good microbreweries and i hope so because the stuff from the big boys when i lived there would actually make one want to drink fosters. or metho. and the oversized cans are another export only thing. i actually find any beer out of cans diabolical - ours, yours and anyone's. they all taste horribly tinny.
Colt45 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 So you guys mean the Foster's commercial with the newlywed bride, still in gown, dunking her head in the beer tub to bring up the last can for her new husband isn't true? I saw it on tv.......

Coopers Extra Stout is a great stout! Nothing else to speak of down there that I have had.
dicko Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Little creatures is the good stuff!! Probably biased coming from the west
bassman Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Haha that's what I tell everyone I meet overseas! If it was good we would have kept it in the country! Sounds like St. Pauli Girl beer from Germany. heavily advertized in USA, but I don't believe it is actually sold in Germany. It, as well as Fosters, is terrible. Don't think i've ever seen any other Aussie beer here.
bunburyist Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Coming from the Holy Land of beer and ale, I can simply sit on my high horse and look down with pity as the rest of the world squabbles over which version of weak piss tastes better. Ireland for stout, England for ale, France, Belgium and Germany for lager. I had a Labbats (sp?) once in Canada....sweet jaysus it was like drinking chilled chicken urine. Having said that, I quite enjoy the occasional VB at a bbq. Japan seems to produce a few nice lagers. My commiserations to you all...

Kangaroo495 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Ice cold VB on a hot day. There's something about it. Also like James Squires. It has a honey/wheaty quality. But haven't been in Oz for the last 4 years, so I'm probably missing out on something. Due to lack of Australian beer in Russia, I've been drinking Czech Budweiser lately - brilliant!
bunburyist Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 much truth in that but at least ours is cold. True, although I've always thought there was something untrustworthy about excessively cold beers. As for the Budweiser Budvar Kanga - good choice. Best served with french fries and unhealthy amounts of salt I reckon
dicko Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Sorry I just can't pay VB! My fav oz widely available stuff (and VB is pretty expensive now) are boags/cascade stuff, swan draught, ALL the little creatures line. Kanga you will be pleased to hear that james squire has added a few beers to their line (esp. last 18 months)! also a few limited releases
Kangaroo495 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 and VB is pretty expensive now Sad news. VB being expensive - it's like a Big Mac being expensive for Americans, or curry being expensive for poms. Doesn't make any sense as it's such a part of the nation's soul... Anyway, I never heard of little creatures. Sounds weird. Will give it a try in December.
thechenman Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I much prefer the microbrews in the U.S. to their big name brand counterparts. I've been a devout drinker of Dogfish Head out of Delaware and Great Lakes out of Ohio...another great one is Brooklyn Brewery right here in NYC. All make some exceptional beers. I guess with many FOH memebers being abroad you probably don't see these brews much if at all. If you get the chance though...give them a try.
