rob has been up from Canberra the past week to catch the sunny rays of Brisbane. Of course it seldom stopped raining but cleared up as he left to catch the plane back yesterday :D

We were hoping to do a video review Tuesday but alas the weather did not permit so rob, smithy and myself resigned ourselves to enjoying some fine wine and cigars .....all supplied by rob B)

First run off the bat was a Montecristo No 4 from 1997.

rob cautioned me not to expect too much from this cigar as he had tried several from his box and had found them underwhelming. isually they looked great with a very good wrapper. The bunch was uneven and the aroma at cold so slight that it was barely discernible.

Clipped the cap, very good dry with a dry flinty tobacco taste through the cold draw. Fired up the foot and through much conversation we let the cigars develop and find their feet. We waited. We waited some more :rotfl:

Light bodied, good smoke volume but in all honesty little initial flavours which when they did appear were minty and metalic with an unconvincing core of aged tobacco. it took the cigar to the halfway point to build to medium body but by that point and with no real development of enjoyable flavours we turned the discussion to other more enlightening topics.

En Fin a forgettable cigar. I rated it an 80-82. rob rated it a 77 from memory. Just a classic case that all that is aged is not necessarilly good. I can pull a fresh 08 M4 from the downstairs humidor now and it will be bursting with smooth coffee and cream.

The Bishop wine however was magnificent :D

Rob reached agin into his bright yellow travel humidor and pulled out a a few Cohiba Piramide 2006 Limited Editions

Now he had Smithy's interest!

Gorgeous looking cigar, perfectly rolled with a sweet pungeant aroma at cold. The wrapper had a sandpaper / shark feel to the touch but was mottled with specks of oil.

From the first moment I took a draw at cold I knew it would be a sensation. Christmas cake hit the palate. I had only clipped a little of the cap to try to restrict the draw as it felt in the hand that it could have been a tad too open. I am glad I did.

From the opening licks of flame on tobacco this was a masterpiece.

The start was brutally strong. White pepper spice blasted the nose, the palate a cacophony of bitter chocolate and liquored treacle.

Intensity and complexity ruled supreme and it took a full inch for the cigar to bring itself back to medium/full body and some decorum. We were all in love.

The next two thirds of this cigar elicited the following descriptions;

Medium/medium full.

Cinnamon

Panacota Cake

Ginger Bread

Chrismas Cake

Spiced bread and butter pudding

Toasted tobacco

Nice cone

Simply one of the great cigar experiences of the year. This Cohiba Piramide 2006 had simply everything I am looking for in a cigar experience of the highest order. I gave it a 96. Smithy a 92, rob a 94.

Of course, cigars are always better when shared with good friends and to rob we say THANKYOU! You are always welcome up here on the deck mate and we look forward to your next sojourn north!

To Ken...we would like you to note that rob brought cigars and a full bottle of wine :D

John & Colin make some fantastic wine. If you get the chance, try the Glaetzer Amon-Ra. The Glaetzer Shiraz (final vintage was 2004, so I guess it's no longer produced) & John's Blend Cab Sauv are also great drops. I've got a couple of those stashed away.

What can I say.......I am a fashion leader Colt

Yeah, just what I was thinking - you and minismithy.......

P.S. and where are you trying to lead 'em?

Fantastic story and pics mixed with a 'mini' review of some great cigars.

I love having a CC on my own with a drink but having friends around is so much more enjoyable. I generally catch up with friends every Friday where we either catch up at ones place and have drinks, food and a smoke or we head out for a few drinks and a smoke. A great way to end the working week. :perfect10:

That Shiraz looked great too. Is that exclusive to your area guys or is Bishop found at the local Bootleshop like Dan Murphys?

Mika, you can get Glaetzer from Dan Murphy's. It was on special last week in NSW.

nice.

feel free to list the occasions when you have darkened my door and not poured as much down your throat as you wanted. and as for bringing cigars to your place, do you (and of course i mean you in the general sense) bring sand to arabia, coal to newcastle, whingers to new zealand, girls to cuba?

the wine is made by ben, colin's son, who is one of the young superstars of the aussie wine industry. he is colin's son (fortunately, doesn't speak the colin/john patter - for those who don't know, john made the wines for wolf blass for years and colin has made many fine wines but they are twins and quite literally have their own language. stand next to them and all you'll hear is a torrent of gibberish that no one else can understand). ben is likely to exceed any achievemnets, and they are many, of both his father and uncle.
