ZugbugPete Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Hi, everyone - I just joined up, after hearing of FOH on Dogwatch Cigar Radio. To be honest, I've only ever had one ISOM in my life - a PSD4 - for my son's birth (he's 10 months old now). I started smoking cigars during the boom (1996), though I didn't know it at the time, but have plenty of room to learn! As for my taste profile, I'm a medium-to-full body, full-flavor cigar junkie... "Domestics" I love include Joya de Nicaragua Antano, 5 vegas serie A, Camacho diploma, La Gloria Cubana Serie R, cohiba (dominican) XV, Anejo's (fuente), La Flor Dominicana, etc etc etc If I have a choice, I reach for coronas or petite coronas first (90% of my smoking is walking our black lab for ~45 minutes... uphill...) As for work, I'm a science geek trapped in a Regulatory Affairs position... yup, that sums it up fairly well... average >60hrs a week Outside of work, I'm a die-hard fly-fisherman/ fly tier (the Zugbug is a fishing fly's name, in my username on here). I live in the "boonies" of eastern PA - so "equidistant from Reading, Philadelphia, and Allentown" for those who know Pennsylvania, or "turn left at Betsy - she's the only BROWN cow in the pastures" for those who don't. I look forward to finding out more about all kinds of cigars (domestic and 'foreign') from everyone.
Trevor2118 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Welcome to FOH....we are predominately Cuban cigars here but plenty to learn.
DocRKS Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Welcome to Friends Of Habana... It's OK to drop that silly isom phrase here ---- It is perfectly acceptable to call them CUBAN cigars That great island nation has a LOT more going for it than to be referred to as merely an island south of Miami... fantastic people, great and proud culture, and a penchant for growing the finest tobacco in the world... Enjoy your experience here at FOH..
Dogwatch Dale Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Welcome to FOH Pete! This is the place to learn about Cuban cigars, these feller's will treat you right. Thanks for joining in the fun!
jeromeroselli Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Pete, We have a lot in common.. I grew up in PA (poconos) went to college in Philadelphia AND Allentown (Art Institute of Phila, and Muhlenberg) and enjoy most of my smokes while walking my dog(s). Although I am split living between NYC and CT now, I am always going back to PA to visit family and enjoy the sights and sounds of the country. Welcome!
Tampa1257 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Welcome to FOH, may I suggest that you read, learn and get to know the members and allow them the opportunity to get to know you. Contribute where you can and most of all, have fun and enjoy mate!
Ken Gargett Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 welcome and enjoy. what is the target for the flyfishing? where do you fish?
ZugbugPete Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 welcome and enjoy.what is the target for the flyfishing? where do you fish? Thanks for all of the welcomes! Ken - I primarily fish for whatever bites at the fly... Seriously? Around here, there's 99% panfish, 1% "stocked stuff". If I'm up for a small trek (~1 hour, depending on who's driving), I go to the Lil' lehigh for trout (prefer rainbow trout for their acrobatics, but with my skills - or lack thereof - I can't be choosy) I actually started tying flies when I was 13 or 14, and didn't learn to fish until several years later (go figure). I've done some of the smaller tying shows (Ft Washington, PA, when they had it, Sowbug in AK, etc) and specialize in realistic flies... but they're meant to catch the attention of fishermen more than fish's attention... Back to cigars - I'm WAY new to the realm of habanos (ok, clueless), I freely admit it, and actually I joined this list because of my curiosity about them. Honestly, I'm still paranoid about the embargo 'stuff'... must be the Regulatory Affairs job stuff in me... I'll get over it. I'm curious what others' opinions are on it. (PM if you wish) I'm not sure that the 'newbie forum' is the place to ask, but I'll ask anyhow - any suggestions for a budget-conscious (grad student- in- postdoc- in- industry- with- <1yr old) lover of medium-full bodied, full flavored sticks? I love the earthy flavors, especially with that 'cream soda' flavor you sometimes get... not over-the-top vanilla, but a more subtle undertone... Pepin's "Tobaccos Baez" has it, but as for CC's I'm clueless. (NC's I like are Joya de Nic Antano, 5 vegas serie A, La Gloria Cubana, Camacho, LFD, etc etc etc) This is getting lengthy as it is, so I'll post and see what types of replies come back. Thanks, all, for the welcomes and the help! -Pete
kanuna Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Welcome to FOH, I am a nebie also and to dang excited about tasting a real cig.
Colt45 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I'm not sure that the 'newbie forum' is the place to ask, but I'll ask anyhow - any suggestions for a budget-conscious (grad student- in- postdoc- in- industry- with- <1yr old) lover of medium-full bodied, full flavored sticks? Welcome to FOH. I don't know that these will meet your budget constraints, but here are just a few suggestions: Much of the Bolivar line - Coronas Gigantes, Coronas Extra, Petit Coronas, Coronas Junior, etc. Members are also reporting that the Belicosos Finos are back up to snuff, if you're looking for a belicoso type shaped cigar. Partagas - Serie du Connaisseur No.s 1,2, & 3. 8-9-8 Varnished. Ramon Allones - Small Club Coronas. Probably high end of the budget, RA Estupendos. There are so many great cigars, and the above are but a few. As I would usually suggest, along with what the members will add, our forum hosts can certainly help steer you in the right direction. With regard to the "cream soda" flavor, the above may not really be of that profile, but if the NCs you enjoy are, why not just smoke them when you are looking for that type of flavor? As to your other concerns, they are legitimate and I think we've all shared them. When you've been here a bit and are ready, our hosts will help you there as well. You've already shown good judgement in not speaking directly about them on the open forum. Have fun!
jwm8592 Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Hey Pete, welcome & enjoy from FOH. I would also agree w/Colt on the Bolivar line, a very earthy line. The petite corona is nice cigar at a very good price, discount or not. cheers
stargazer14 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Come down to Philly this spring and meet some of the group, maybe get to sample some of the fruit... http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/inde...showtopic=96398
