these are, for me, one of the absolute prize catches on fly. i got one on christmas island mid last year but have to fess up that i suspect that it was about 4 hours after it was born so fair to say not quite that size. even it fought like mad.

a few days later i was chasing bones on the flats and turned (we had a strong wind behind us - the guides almost always work it that way - so could not realistically cast far into it. always embarassing when the fly you cast whizzes back past your ear) and thought a shark was coming over the the flats. it was an amazing sight. then thought not a shark, a silver hippo! was a massive GT. whether bigger than this, i could not say but at least that size. i had an 8 weight. had i been able to cast to it, i suspect my line would have last been seen over the horizon.

had a specific go at them later in the week and had a few very brief hook-ups but each time, over in seconds. one that i could not see (often you see them hit the fly near you), dragged me ten feet across the reef and then was gone. they are brutes.

did see one come up to our guide on a semi-submerged reef (way out in the mid ocean with no land for mles) and actually take berley out of his hand. it was about 40lb - i think it was sick - but an amazing sight. till the guide stuck a hook in its mouth.

mate sent me this pic. great fish.

Help a non-fisherman out, Ken. What exactly does the GT stand for?

Wilkey, I'm not Ken, but GT stands for giant trevally, known by the Hawaiians as ulua.

The Seychelles are probably the most beautiful Islands that I have ever been to. The fishing is great and the beaches are pristine. Made me think about what the Hawaiian Islands were 100 years ago.

Thank you!

Wilkey

giant trevally indeed. they have been known to snap rods on unsuspecting fishermen. what is amazing is that they will come over the shallows and flats where more than half their body is exposed. all a bit terrifying.

Good eating too...

interesting thought. i've not heard of any of my mates who have caught them eating them. it would be all catch and release. must say that i would find it very hard to kill something so fabulous.

we did see one of the large tankers, parked nearby, hauling them up and over - no doubt for food.

Fished for GTs at Christmas Islands (Kirribati) back in 2000. Pull one in on a 10 weight at 75 lbs and got another within the fly line and it straightened the hook on a 12 weight. Love to go Seychelles to fish for these.
