Australia shuts down navy for Christmas!

I just saw this in the Washington Post this morning.

Closing your Navy for Christmas? Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says the break which begins Dec 3rd is "just a way of saying thank you and encouraging them to stay in the service."

Another one that has me scratching my head. . . :D

Giving your Sailors a break is a nice gesture - I guess. I did not know they took vacations. The part I do not understand is the pre-announcement. This is in just enough time for someone to plan and then mount a naval attack. Bush will still be in office until Jan. 20. He might decide he has a hankering for Koala steak... He could combine that with the harm he believes the Ausi accent does to the English language and voila, "Operation Dead Koala." I would be careful.

It's only a stand down for those not on active service - ie in the gulf or mucking around the Timor sea etc.

So they've basically cancelled training missions to allow people to have Christmas with their families which makes sense I think.
