Hi guys, my very good mate whom I went to cuba with and started smoking cigars with is getting married up in the the beautiful Queensland sunshine coast at Noosa on Nov 11. He's an avid Partagas D4 man. I've tried him on the Siglo 6, the Trini Robusto Extra and a host of others. He doesn't mind the occasional Romeo petit corona or monte 4 in the smaller sizes. But his heart lies with Partagas. He doesn't mind the 8-9-8 but one made him a little green a while ago and his ego wont let him go there again. Last weekend we went on the Bucks day and ended in Fidels cigar lounge at Melbourne Casino. I gifted him a D1 LE 2004. Cost us $10 to smoke them in their salubrious surrounds, even though they were charging $16 a shot of Lagavulin. But the D1's are still a touch green (will be awsome xmas pudding in 2 years) and when we had a puff of a friends D4 to taste the difference I could tell where his heart lay. I'm in charge of stoggies for the wedding. Seeing as his taste is so D4 the choice seems easy. But a little too easy. I'm thinking either the Lusitania or the new P2 that everyone has raved about if Rob has any singles left. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bill. Get a box of 10 P2's. Cant go wrong. They are great fresh and bit more refined than the PSD4 im my opinion. If he's a Partagas guy than you cant lose. I love a good D4, but the P2's are effing amazing at the moment. Hope this helps you mate.:ok:

If he really loves the D2, that's what I'd get. You could always give him Lusis, or P2s as a personal gift. But alas, my own personal experience with D2s has been less than stellar - I'd try to find D2s with a few years age, if that's what you go with.

If he really likes the D4, go with them. The P2 is great also, but although it has some similarities, it's not a D4. You could buy him a single D4 Reserva for a really special smoke, if Rob has any left. Or if you have a large budget, Reservas all around!

Bill,

I am a tried and true Partagas *****, there is absolutely no doubt in this fact.

BUT, due to the occasion, and other cigars you have mentioned, I am going to suggest perhaps you travel a different path.

This is a Wedding, so first thought would be finesse and class with matched harmony, flavor and complexity. Also a factor is time. The new Mrs is surely going to want some of the time besides Cigar time. Thus my suggested plan of action for the wedding.........

Cohiba Robusto's which provide all the flavor, complexity finesse and class. The CoRo speaks volumes about the gravity of this tremendous occasion, and if time permits, have a Partagas Short as a nice small Partagas peppery spice as a night cap for those that might want or need just a tad more. Food for thought anyway.

Sound thinking Chuck! That's a smart plan. Add a Reserva for him to enjoy on the honeymoon, and you've done your job well.

» Go for the Reserva's or if not stick with the regular D4's with maybe a

» surprise Luci... for trial or the P2

Who says you can't have 'em all? The more the merrier, I say!

BTW, Chuck is absolutely correct when he says that he is a Partagas *****. Every Partagas I've ever met wants to screw him!

Nice food for thought guys. I've still got a week or so to work it out. But a mixed bag may be the go. Give him the choice, depending on time. It's not as though they're not going to get smoked. And we've got four days in sunny Noosa to devour as many as possible. :-D

bill, i'd go the mixed bag and then he can pick what grabs him and either you are a genius or he is at fault. so you can't lose.

i think the P2's, as good as they are, are too young at the moment. lusi is a personal favourite. the ones i got from rob a few years ago that had 6-7 years on them were stellar. almost all gone sadly. if you can get hold of something with a bit of age for the day (rob must have some use), give it a shot.

one thing that really concerns me is that, if i read you correctly, fidel's now charges $10 for you to smoke your own. have not been for a year or so but had no problems when last there. is this a new policy? if you are buying drinks, i think it absolutely stinks.

That was their policy Ken. It was the first time I'd been there, but the buck had been a few times and that was their policy I think about a year or so ago as well. I guess we should've arched up a bit more and explained we were buying drinks. But I don't think they liked us. Not that we were rowdy or anything even though we had been drinking since lunch. I think they were concerned we would disrupt the other patrons relaxing with stoggies. They even separated us into two groups of 6 at either end and said we weren't allowed to swap from either group because we'd disrupt others. We asked them for a private room and they said it was a $1200 limit. Not the same atmosphere so we didn't take it. But we spent around $1200 anyway. We honestly were very well behaved. But I guess it was just a friday night and they wanted to control the crowd and keep room for after work regulars. But it all put a bit of a dampener on things. Their cigar list was surprisingly limited as well. At least the scotch list was good.

i remember thinking when last there that i was quite pleased i had brought my own as the list didn't excite, tho can't recall specifics. tough enough to find somewhere to smoke cigars without copping that sort of crap.

If the man likes SD4 then get him that. The Reserva are the best out there but they are high dollar. How good a mate is this? If you can find a Selecta Privada 00 yr that would be another great chioce. The Coro is the only other robusto worthy of such an occasion. Good times to ya mate.:-)

I'm with Mel... CoRo are sure fire winners.... but watch for sick D4's... you don't need them spoiling the day.

Get him a box of the oldest D4 that you can find and also add a box with a smaller Rg that less seasoned smoker and maybe his future wife will not turn green from smoking.
