Labor to spruik new drinking guidelines

The federal government is facing a tough task in selling new national drinking guidelines.

Drinkers who consume more than four mid-sized beers may be classed as binge drinkers under the new guidelines to be introduced next month.

The guidelines are expected to say men and women should consume no more than two standard drinks per day, either three glasses of wine or four middies of beer.

The latest move in the federal government's war on binge drinking comes on top of a 70 per cent rise in the excise on so-called alcopops.

Some health groups and the federal opposition have criticised the guidelines, with coalition health spokesman Tony Abbott accusing the federal government of trying to create hysteria over binge drinking.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the opposition has teamed up with the alcohol industry to attack the government's efforts to curb excessive drinking.

"The only people who seem to think this is not a problem are the alcohol industry and the Liberal Party," Ms Roxon said.

So what happens with the persona-non-gratas who are deemed as "binge drinkers"?

Looked up in rehab?

Shipped to the old world?

Does this only apply on beer or is the wine-drinkers in the line of fire to?

Alco-pop? Must be the male version of an alco-mom. A charming euphemism for an alcoholic parent. What's next... the alco-boss, or alco-pal? Hey, maybe they're a frozen alcohol confection on a stick? Either way, you Ozzies are pioneering a new form of alco-culture.

Alco-stralia: the land where sobriety never had a chance.

Alcopops....breezers/cans of rum and coke/bourbon and coke etc etc.

The problem of normal go ahead people leaving politics as a career choice is exactly this.

The only people who end up trying are friendless, funless, sexless, tofu eating, know all zealots who wish to make the world as miserable as themselves.

To all Aussies......send a letter in to your MP letting him know not to get too comfortable sitting in Government leather. Tell them to get to a bloody pub, shout a round, take around the meat raffle, place a bet on the dogs a the TAB and argue with someone whether Warnie should have been made captain of the Aussie Cricket team.

No more unwooded chardonnay and sushi.

Just thinking about this. A middy is about 1 standard drink, which is the amount of ethanol an average adult male can metabolise in one hour. This means that you can 'binge drink' (four middy's over four or more hours) and still legally drive ;-)

From ABC-news:

Pub industry rejects 4-drink 'binge' benchmark.

The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) says it is unrealistic to set a benchmark of four standard drinks a night as the limit for binge drinking.

The National Health and Medical Research Council is reportedly planning to lower its recommendation on the top limit for safe drinking to four standard drinks - four middie-sized glasses of beer or three glasses of wine.

The Hotel Association's Tom McGuire says binge drinking is the gross over-indulgence of alcohol - not having four drinks.

He says the Government should set a realistic limit.

"This is an indication that this sort of mentality is growing, and unfortunately it probably detracts from the real thrust - that's to make people drink more responsibly,' he said.

"If you set unrealistic limits you lose the support of the population."

The Federal Government has not confirmed the four drink threshold but says the guidelines need to be updated.

Mr McGuire says four standard drinks does not constitute a binge.

"Binging to me is gross over-indulgence of any product," he said.

"I don't have that relevant expertise to say whether it's 40, 14 or four, but the term 'binge' to me just indicates gross over-indulgence and I don't think this latest would justify the term binge drinking."

I had to edit the rant, but after reading it, my first thought? To post in this topic, you must at least first have met the Ausi definition of binge drinking recently prior...

As much as it makes me feel dirty all over, I agree with tony abbot. I'm so sick of the moral panic, and the media seemingly doing everything it can to generate public outrage to sell more papers. Now that reports are coming out showing that the tax increase on rtd's hasn't curbed teenage drinking (the govt reason for the increase) at all, I wonder how long it will be before the government suggests further tax increases on alcohol all round? Or why not just ban it all together?

The lock-out curfews coming in all around aus really get to me as well. These are also supposed to curb binge drinking and alcohol related violence. The laws state that if you leave a bar/nightclub after 3am you cannot get back in. So if you go outside to have a cigarette, or walk a friend to a cab, you'll find yourself locked out. It might not seem so bad, but 3am also happens to be cab changeover time, so there are no cabs around until at least 4am, and no public transport is running at that time. Great going government, you've just tossed a bunch of people out onto the streets in the city with no way of getting home. If thats not a recipe for violence, I don't know what is.

What ever happened to educating people and letting them make their own decisions? No, apparently adults can't be trusted to make their own decisions anymore. And why bother educating people when you can just raise the tax on something and make more money? Coincidently some of the few places exempted from the curfew laws happen to be casinos (all of which contain multiple bars). I wonder why that is? I'm just waiting for the government to release a list of activities it approves and disapproves of. It all kind of reminds me of this episode of the simpsons...
